Paul Grabowsky headlines this week at The Ellington


The count is back in town this week and will lead his wonderful Perth band over three nights this weekend (quartet Friday and sextet Saturday and Sunday).  Another show really worth catching is the amazing composer and arranger Ed Partyka (USA/Germany) as he takes MFO on a musical journey to remember on Thursday night. Also the farewell show for Jeremy Gregory and Cian Caton late Friday will be sure to rock the richter scale.

TUESDAY 8.00pm Penny King - Songs of Thelonious Monk
This evening, Penny and her band will present the songs of Thelonious Monk, featuring lyrics by Jon Hendricks, Abbey Lincoln and Soesja Citroen.  Inspired after recently reading David Kastin’s biography of ‘The Jazz baroness’, Nina de Koenigswarter; which chronicles her close friendship with Monk and her influence on his music, Penny has revisited the music composed by Monk  and the stories behind it. Featuring Carl Mackey(saxophone), Tom O’Halloran (piano), Karl Florisson (bass) and Ben Falle (drums). Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Anea Duratovic Quintet - Pop into Jazz
What do Paul Simon, The Police, The Beatles and numerous other Pop artists have in common? Ellington Jazz Club habituĂ©e Anea Duratovic and her quintet will be refrocking a number of their most famous pop melodies in fresh jazz attire. Joining Anea tonight are Patrick van der Moezel, Ben Matthews, Karl Florisson and Bronton Ainsworth. THURSDAY 8.00pm Ed Partyka with The Mace Francis Orchestra
The Mace Francis Orchestra will be joined by internationally recognised composer and trombonist Ed Partyka after his artist in residence program with WAYJO.  Mace and Ed not only share a birthday but also a passion for original music for the big band line-up. Tonight's concert will feature an augmented MFO line-up (including vocals by Anea Duratovic) to present Ed's exciting and creative music. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 8.00pm Paul Grabowsky Quartet
Paul Grabowsky is without doubt one of the finest musicians, composers and artistic minds in Australia. Classically trained - he had ambitions to become a conductor, before becoming absorbed in jazz as a teenager - he quit his studies at the Melbourne Conservatorium to concentrate on jazz. He has become one of Australia's leading musicians, from leading the house band on Steve Vizard tonight show, to artistic director of The Australian Art orchestra, film composer of note, commissioning editor of the ABC and director of the Adelaide festival. He will be presenting three night of incredible music (quartet on Friday ands sextet Saturday and Sunday) with Jamie Oehlers (sax), Carl Mackey (Sat and Sun - sax), Jeremy Greig (Sat and Sun - trombone), Nick Abbey (bass) and Jacob Evans (drums). Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 11.30pm Jeremy Gregory and Cian Caton - farewell show
Jeremy Gregory and Cian Caton are packing their bags and heading over east. To say a final farewell they are putting on a massive three set show. The three set show will feature an individual set by Jeremy himself where he’ll pleasure your ears with his very own original songs, a fresh set by Cian paying tribute to her favourite influences and to end the night right, a spectacular final set featuring both Jeremy and Cian. Delivering fresh selects from the Neo Soul, R&B and Hip Hop culture come bear witness this premium act backed by an incredible 4-piece band made up of Graham Wood (keys), Tom O’ Halloran (keys), Roy Martinez (bass) and Ben Falle (drums). SATURDAY 11.30pm Meg Mac and The Squeeze
Megan McInerney is one of Perth's best young singers. She has a great voice as well a musical approach to song writing and performing that is seeing her demand on the local scene grow. The squeeze are a hot young band led by Lewis Moody who will guarantee a killin late show. MONDAY 16th April 7.00pm The Rolling BB Blues Band
If you want to feel good – go to a blues show. Blues music transcends through raw emotion, humour and the introspection of life’s challenges that we all face. The Rolling BB Blues Band play a mix of electrified blues along the lines of the Chicago & Texas blues masters with a mixture of powerful and humorous lyrics, along with fiery and emotive instrumental interludes. Talented guitarist Matty Wall leads on vocals and guitar and is backed up by John Perry (leader of Perth Hills Jazz Orchestra) on bass and vocals, Adam Mann, an unforgettable vocalist on vocals and guitar, Erhard Etzbach on blues harmonica, and the solid thump provided by Kim Kimenowski on drums. Click here for tickets
