Easter weekend at The Ellington


Get set for some great surprises this weekend including a very special late show Saturday from David Ryan Harris (USA), Terepai Richmond (Sydney), Adam Ventoura (Sydney), Howie Morgan, James Sandon and Tom O'Halloran. Also we welcome the return of Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys Thursday and Saturday and late night Latin Sunday featuring Marcio Mendes and Friends. Tuesday night is free for members but all welcome. 

MONDAY 7.00pm Chamber Jam

Chamber Jam @ The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other. Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues. Featuring CADENCE: Songs Without Spokes - Adam Pinto (piano), Louise McKay (cello). TUESDAY 7.00pm Jazz and Art - members free with The Ali Bodycoat Quintet and Phil Doncon live artist

Members free tonight - but all welcome. Ali Bodycoat has been performing professionally in the Jazz scene throughout venues in Western Australia since 1995 with her Trio, Quartet and Quintet. Ali has performed at the Perth Jazz Society, Jazz Fremantle, Perth and Fremantle Festivals and worked consistently in Musical Theatre with yellow glass theatre inc since studying at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2002. Ali has held a trio residency with Graham Wood and other venerable Perth Jazz musicians such as Sam Anning, Dane Alderson and Carl Mackey at the Subiaco Hotel for thirteen years, supported Vince Jones, Grace Knight and Marcia Hynes and consistently works with the state’s top Jazz Musicians. Recent shows have received critical acclaim including Minor Major Marlene - based on the work of Marlene Dietrich and Franklin - a tribute to Aretha Franklin. Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 8.00pm The Russell Holmes Trio

(Note later start time due to private function - doors open at 8.00pm) 2001 WAMI award winning Jazz Pianist, Russell Holmes has performed with many great jazz ensembles including MPS, Frames of Minds, The Raggabillys, Hip Mo Toast and artists such as Dale Barlow, Red Rodney and many others. Most recent highlights would include being invited to perform at the Celimontana Jazz Festival in Rome, Italy  ( July2006 ) and supporting James Taylor at the infamous Leeuwin concert .  Whilst being recorded on over 35 cds, in 2006 he released “One Evening”, a cd recorded with his regular trio with  Matt Willis and Danny Susnjar.  This was launched  in  October 2006 . Russell’s most recent recording is a nationally released cd by the ABC Jazz label entitled Fire and Rain ‘THE JAMES  TAYLOR PROJECT’( released 21st February 2009) which features the regular trio line-up performing eleven beautiful tracks of James Taylor songs. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 8.00pm Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys 

(Note later start time due to private function - doors open at 8.00pm) 2013 is full steam ahead for international trumpeter and vocalist Adam Hall. Hall has been touring with the Richard Jackson Trio (Singapore) and nationally with Big Jay McNeely (USA). He also found time to record two new CDs at the internationally famous Lion Studios in Singapore. Recent travels include travel to Europe to tour with Big Jay McNeely (USA) playing to full houses in Spain, Germany and Vienna as part of the Winter Festival series. Adam recently officially released his two latest CDs When It’s Party Time Down South and It’s You It’s Me at the Fremantle Arts Centre. The line up is Hall (lead vocals and trumpet), Tim Forster (original band member; tenor sax, flute and vocals), Mark Turner (Guitar and Vocals), Adam Springhetti (Double Bass), Matt Hanson (Drums) and special guest appearances by Jessie Gordon (Vocals) and original VP member Len Whittle (keyboard). Click here for tickets

Don't miss this incredible one off late show with the Guy Sebastian's touring band. The evening will kick off with a set from Howie Morgan, James Sandon and Tom O'Halloran (while the Guy Sebastian gig finishes at Burswood Theatre) and then it will be full steam ahead with the other three members - David Ryan Harris and friends Terepai Richmond and Adam Ventoura. David Ryan Harris is a singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, California. Born in Evanston, Illinois, Harris moved to Atlanta at a young age. After a short period out of the limelight, Harris began working as a producer and featured guitarist with Dionne Farris, a former vocalist from hip-hop group Arrested Development. Harris’ guitar work can be heard throughout Farris’ 1995 album Wild Seed, Wild Flower. Harris worked with Farris until he launched his solo career in 1997. In March 2009, Harris performed with Australian musician Guy Sebastian at SXSW, Austin Texas and has been collaborating since then. Terapai Richmond is without doubt on of Australia's finest drummers and featured as part of the Australian acid jazz group DIG. He is highly in demand as a session and  touring drummer. Adam Ventoura began his musical career in Perth and after relocating to Sydney  has been bassist in some of Australia's iconic rock and pop bands including Jon Stevens and Guy Sebastian. Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 5.30pm The Gavin Kerr Quartet featuring Mel Crothers

This Easter Sunday the Gavin Kerr Quartet will be swinging up a storm at the Ellington with their favourite vocalist, Mel Crothers. After performing to packed audiences throughout 2012, this group of talented musicians are back to play their well loved brand of swinging jazz just for you. Joining Gavin will be Ookii Effendi on piano, Danny Moss Jnr on bass and Daron Crothers on reeds. Having performed hundreds of times together it is obvious, to the many audiences that have heard their music, that this quartet truly enjoy their musical partnership. SUNDAY 8.30pm Samba Social Club - Marcio Mendes and Friends

Tables removed for dancing so no table bookings available for this show. These guys play samba, the rhythms of North East Brazil and everything in between. Blending electronic sounds with acoustic vibrancy, these two have a natural chemistry that is infectious. Marcio Mendes - Marcio hails from Sau Paulo, Brazil's largest city. He has  played  music professionally since his early 20’s and has performed with highly respected names of the Brazilian music scene such as Djavan and also famous samba and pagode bands from Brazil such as Mundo do Samba, Arte Popular and Negritude Junior. He has entertained crowds as large as 100 thousand people in Brazil, Europe and Australia with artists such as Leandro Learte and the pianist Tania Maria. Click here for tickets

Deborah Conway headlines this week at The Ellington


Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier headline this Saturday night with a special one off Ellington show. The sublime Grace Woodroofe is back for two special shows on Tuesday and Wednesday and a debut show from Sydney singer songwriter Brett Winterford on Thursday. Other shows to check out include the debut of the FSO - Five Sax Orchestra on Sunday and a fantastic Song Lounge this Monday evening. 

MONDAY 7.00pm Song Lounge 

Presented by North Street Music, Song Lounge features a selection of Australia's leading singer-songwriters together for an evening of wine, tapas and storytelling. This week's line up includes Riley Pearce - His musical influences includes the likes of Passenger, Matt Corby & Charlie Simpson who all have their own unique styling much the same as Riley offers. Jessica Morhall - Her songs reflect the internal dialogue of what it means to be human and carving out your own path in this world. Nat Ripepi - Rich, warm and emotive are a few words to describe the voice of one of Australia’s best kept vocal secrets. Hussy Hicks - In a world where almost everything is reliant on a slick sales pitch or novelty marketing ploy Hussy Hicks are a genuine breath of fresh air. Click here for tickets

TUESDAY 7.00pm Grace Woodroofe

Returning from the USA for 2 special shows at The Ellington. With her uniquely warm, husky, and sometimes mournful voice, Grace Woodroofe is about to make a special mark on the music scene. At just twenty years of age, Perth-born Grace possesses wisdom and artistry well beyond her years. Forming a bond with music as a teenager, Grace taught herself to play guitar and sing. “I was greatly inspired by blues singers, and developed my own blues indie sound,” she says. At the age of sixteen, Grace’s demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper by none other than the late Heath Ledger. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 7.00pm Brett Winterford (Sydney)

Brett Winterford is a folk singer-songwriter from Sydney, Australia. Reinventing the modern day troubadour, Winterford has spent the last couple of years writing songs, travelling the globe and creating a groundbreaking path for folk music, performing unique concerts atop double-decker buses, on river barges, in ancient forts, bedrooms, corner pubs and cafes from Berlin to Brooklyn. His long awaited solo debut, ‘The Greenthumb EP’, is a set of six songs inspired by ‘Pan’ a famous Australian landscape painting by Sydney Long. The EP was recorded by Josh Schuberth (Josh Pyke) and it features special guests Mr Percival, Ray Mann and Kent Eastwood. Coloured by nylon-string acoustics and mandolins, pianos and mellotron, shakers, timpani and tom drums, the recordings deal with the trials and triumphs of the troubadour, the reclaiming of imagination and appreciation for the natural world. Click here for tickets

WAMI Award winning songstress Jodie Tes, makes her return to the Perth Jazz scene with an exciting repertoire inspired by Nina Simone, Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald. Since graduating from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2001, Jodie has gone on to record three albums and to tour nationally and internationally. A soulful performer whose music paints a vivid picture, Jodie Tes reignites the tradition of the torch song and injects new energy into the old standards. Click here for tickets

Conway & Zygier explore the breadth of sound that can be extracted from acoustic instruments and vocals. The sound is endlessly inventive within the bounds of real. Their new album “Stories Of Ghosts” is an examination of Old Testament themes, of existential uncertainty in the face of unchanging beliefs and coming to terms with the endless trade off that life is full of - loss leavened with happiness, tragedy with humour and sadness with joy. Building on the acoustic instrumentation of 2010’s Half Man Half Woman, Stories Of Ghosts adds layers of wood, strings & air, creating a sound that veers from delicate & melancholy to savage & fierce. Click here for tickets

Dd Soul will be gracing the Ellington stage once again playing a combination of R&B, Pop, funk, Blues tunes. Fronting Dd Soul will be Chelsea Cullen, A Talented up and coming vocalist. SUNDAY 5.30pm FSO - Five Sax Orchestra

The ‘five sax orch’ was established as a dedicated band in 2012 after almost a decade working as a section with WASO, Malaysian Philharmonic, Singapore Symphony, and a multitude of shows. Providing an opportunity to meet together regularly and share great red wine was the real reason it solidified, but it soon became clear that this unique collection of fine saxophonists was becoming a musical force. FSO is: Matt Styles soprano and alto saxes & wannabe sommelier, Melissa Skinner alto and soprano saxes, stylist & consultant, Luke Pownall tenor and alto saxes, marketing guru & 5 Seeds cider model, Keith McGowan tenor sax, obsessive-compulsive cyclist, Alex Boyd baritone sax, wine & cigar connoisseur. This week at The Ellington


Get set for another fantastic week of music including shows from the enigmatic Eugene Ball (Melb) on Thursday, the debut for the Luke Minness Quintet on Tuesday and we are pleased to introduce the pre-reggae sound of ska, rocksteady, and calypso from The Isolites on Sunday. And to top it all off, Meg Mac and the Squeeze will be reuniting for one special show on Wednesday night with the return of several players from the eastern states. Don't miss a beat!!






MONDAY 7.00pm Cameron Buma

Perth trombonist Cameron Buma makes his triumphant return from a year in Europe with an exciting collection of brand new tunes. Inspired by the music of New York based band Snarky Puppy, Cameron will present a repertoire that defies genres. Cam describes his music in this way: "Imagine if Gospel, Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop, Reggae, Soul and Movie Music were all put into the Large Hadron Collider and smashed together. THURSDAY 7.00pm Eugene Ball (Melb) and the Jamie Oehlers quartet

As one of Australia’s most active and versatile trumpet players Eugene performs extensively throughout Australia and around the World with groups including the Hoodangers, the Andrea Keller Quartet, the Allan Browne Quintet, the Australian Art Orchestra, the Black Arm Band, the Bennetts Lane Big Band and the Ball/Magnusson/Talia trio. He has performed throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Former Soviet States, Asia, North and South America, India and the Pacific. Freelancing highlights include performances with international artists Jamie Cullum (UK), Satoko Fujii (JPN), Wycliff Gordon (USA) and Jakob Dinesen (DK) and celebrated Australians Paul Grabowsky, Mike Nock, Tony Gould, Graham Lyall, Bernie McGann and Don Burrows.  Eugene has also worked with leading commercial artists including John Butler, Kate Ceberano, David Cambell, Jimmy Barnes, Paul Kelly and Shane Howard.  His performances have opened for legends including Charlie Haden, Branford Marsalis and the Revered Al Green. FRIDAY 7.00pm Jade-Lori Crompton with the Simon Jeans Quartet

Don't miss one of our favourite singers as she returns for the early Jazz show as  she once again makes a splash with the sultry and bluesey tones reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday and Sarah Vaughan. Jade–Lori Crompton, daughter of Stax recording artist C L Blast's (known for his work on songs such as; Buster Brown's "Fannie Mae"; Don Gardner/Dee Dee Ford's "I Need Your Lovin'", Gladys Knight's "You Broke Your Promise" and the (fantastic) "Valerie" by Jackie & The Starlites). Her voice is said to be coloured by heartfelt Gospel tones, syrup smooth R&B, and playful melodies reminiscent of childhood Jazz influences. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 10.30pm Amande Dee - Soul Divas

This Tuesday Amanda Dee will be paying tribute (with another amazing line-up of muso's and vocalists) to the songs and legendary soul divas of our time. From Aretha, Diana, Whitney,  Tina to Chaka, Mariaa, Beyonce and more. It's going to be a fantastic show so don't miss out on this great night of songs that will have you holding your heart or dancing with your hands up in the air. SUNDAY 5.30pm The Isolites

Bringing you the 60s sounds of Jamaica and the Caribbean, with smokin' horns and a swingin' rhythm section, the Isolites create the early pre-reggae sound of ska, rocksteady, and calypso. Winning the RTRFM Jamdown Vershun 92.1fm Best Local Rocksteady band & Best Local ska band award for 2012, their live show presents plenty of fresh original songs mixed with the best selection from great Jamaican artists. In an Isolites show you might hear Calypso from a by-gone era alive and kickin', a beloved reggae dance track, a horn saturated ska song, then a sweet rocksteady duet. The Ellington Jazz Club turns 4


Join us for a week long party with 11 shows to celebrate our amazing range and diversity of 1st class music. It was four short years ago (March 5, 2009) that our doors swung open to the public and since then we have presented more than 2400 shows. Fringe World and PIAF are over but please don't stop going out and supporting arts and culture - The Ellington is a 52 week a year music festival and presents the highest quality shows 7 nights a week, employing 2800 musicians a year. 

MONDAY 7.00pm Alies Sluiter - The Picture Box Orchestra Album Launch (Melbourne) 

Combining Indian Classical techniques with Jazz, Gypsy and Western Classical influences The Picture Box Orchestra are unlike anything else you have ever seen. Led by composer Alies Sluiter and comprising vocals, violin, cello and tabla the resulting music is a curious melting pot of musical genres that takes the audience on an inspired musical exploration of that point where politics, beliefs and cultures intersect. Collectively they have worked with Nitin Sawhney, Hugh Jackman, Akram Khan, Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and The Shaolin Monks of China to name a few. Individually these artists have extraordinary careers and are heralded for their work. TUESDAY 7.00pm & 9.00pm Fancy Meeting You - The Songs of Harold Arlen (1 hour cabaret show)

There is a time and place where Jazz is King. New York's upper set savour gin from tea cups and swing to the blues long into the Harlem night. Among the dimly lit tables are the characters that live taboo. The Maitre d', the showgirl, the muso. Hear their stories sung and their secrets whispered to the melodies of Harold Arlen. Direct from sell-out performances at Melbourne's The Butterfly Club and Perth's Underground Cabaret, Fancy Meeting You is an homage to the Master of the Great American Songbook and a journey into the clubs of 1930s New York. WEDNESDAY 7.00pm The Perth Jazz Society presents The Collaboratory with Adam James and Jade Crompton

As comfortable performing the likes of Stevie Wonder and Kimbra as they are Sinatra and Nina Simone, Adam James and Jade Crompton have long been staples of the Perth music scene. Moving seamlessly between jazz and the myriad of styles that make up 'contemporary music' these two artists come together tonight to bring you their unique take on jazz. Joined by talented young bass man Robin Murray, this collaboration is sure to be acoustic jazz with a difference. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 7.00pm Bob Sedergreen and friends (Melb)

Melbourne’s Bob Sedergreen is one of Australia’s jazz treasures with a career at the top going back decades. As a pianist, leader, composer and educator Bob has been an inspiration to many including Garry Lee who will perform with him on vibraphone and guitar at The Ellington on Thursday 7 March. Bob has accompanied international legends of jazz including Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Woods, Milt Jackson, Royce Campbell [Bunbury International Jazz Festival -2008], Nat Adderley and Jimmy Witherspoon and in the case of the last two mentioned, touring throughout Australia as their Musical Director. Belleville are back at the Ellington again with their eclectic mix of Parisian swing and gypsy flare, featuring the combined skills of Sarah Clare on Bass, Lachlan Gear and Justin Kutylowski on guitars and Charlie McCarthy on fiddle. Belleville are an acoustic Gypsy Swing band carrying on the tradition of Gypsy Jazz created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli which pulls influences from swing, traditional Latin, Parisian waltzes, and other vintage-jazz sources. Joe and Sam team up to bring you a night of earth-shaking, soul-infused R&B! Sam’s raw and organic tone has made him one of Perth’s most versatile vocalists while Joe has been energetically pushing the low-end frequencies in many bands around town. Armed with a phenomenal band, these two are pumped to bring some of their favourite tunes to the Ellington stage. The repertoire will explore a range of sub-genres, showcasing tunes from various artists including Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, the Roots, Jamiroquai and Stevie Wonder. From 70s-flavoured funk to neo-soul to ground-thumping beats – and anything and everything in between! SATURDAY 7.00pm Saffron Sharp

Come down to see the Saffron Sharp Quintet thrive on stage as they explore standards and contemporary tunes for your Saturday evening, post voting entertainment! The band has been working on new expressions of old and contemporary 'standards' with their uniquely experienced jazz twist. Upon graduating from WAAPA Saffron Sharp's improvised performance returns to the Ellington stage with saxophonist Jamie Oehlers and pianist Tal Cohen. This band has a unique ability to improvise and harmonise making every performance a new one. SUNDAY 3.00pm Summer Wine with Sonja D’anne and Julius Lutero

With years of national and international experience between them, pop singer/recording artist, Sonja D’anne and singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, Julius Lutero present, ‘Summer Wine At the Ellington’, bringing to the table a taste of songs from the US summers of the 60s and 70s. Sonja performed and toured across Australia, Canada and the USA regularly during the 1990s and early 2000s with her concert ‘The Heart Goes On’. Since then, most of her time has been devoted to another great love, that of helping musicians fulfil their musical dreams. She is currently in preparation for her new album, ‘When Two World’s Collide’. Julius is a seasoned performer in his own right, having toured all over Australia as a soloist and with his trio and their blend of roots, funk, and blues. Join three friends on a journey to a special place, where Noongar language strikes a relationship with acoustic instruments and results in an easy mix of warm, beautiful tones. You don't need to understand the words to know what's going on:  it's a heart thing, and we all share that common bond. Drawn together through a common commitment to helping those in the Wheatbelt communities to find their voice through songwriting, Gina Williams, Guy Ghouse and David Hyams have struck upon a special musical project of their own. All three artists are known for their work with other high profile, award winning WA Acts; Gina Williams and the Lubbly Sings, Guy Ghouse with Desert Child and David Hyams with the Miles to Go Band. The Nueva Salsa Orchestra was formed in 2011 by it’s Musical Director and Trumpet player Marty Pervan, and they have a reputation as the hottest Cuban and New Yorkan salsa band this side of Latin America. The NSO is comprised of some of Australia’s finest musicians who have all performed in musical projects both nationally and internationally including an incredible experience as the backing band for Columbian superstar Wilson Saoko in 2011. With a repertoire consisting of high energy salsas, mambos and cha chas, the NSO are guaranteed to have you moving your body to the infectious rhythms of their fabulous percussion section, sparkling horns, extraordinary piano and bass grooves, and the sublime vocal talents of Adolfo Chavez and Kate Pervan. Perth trombonist Cameron Buma makes his triumphant return from a year in Europe with an exciting collection of brand new tunes. Inspired by the music of New York based band Snarky Puppy, Cameron will present a repertoire that defies genres. The Ellington Jazz Club turns 4


Join us for a week long party with 11 shows to celebrate our amazing range and diversity of 1st class music. It was four short years ago (March 5, 2009) that our doors swung open to the public and since then we have presented more than 2400 shows. Fringe World and PIAF are over but please don't stop going out and supporting arts and culture - The Ellington is a 52 week a year music festival and presents the highest quality shows 7 nights a week, employing 2800 musicians a year. 

MONDAY 7.00pm Alies Sluiter - The Picture Box Orchestra Album Launch (Melbourne) 

Combining Indian Classical techniques with Jazz, Gypsy and Western Classical influences The Picture Box Orchestra are unlike anything else you have ever seen. Led by composer Alies Sluiter and comprising vocals, violin, cello and tabla the resulting music is a curious melting pot of musical genres that takes the audience on an inspired musical exploration of that point where politics, beliefs and cultures intersect. Collectively they have worked with Nitin Sawhney, Hugh Jackman, Akram Khan, Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and The Shaolin Monks of China to name a few. Individually these artists have extraordinary careers and are heralded for their work. TUESDAY 7.00pm & 9.00pm Fancy Meeting You - The Songs of Harold Arlen (1 hour cabaret show)

There is a time and place where Jazz is King. New York's upper set savour gin from tea cups and swing to the blues long into the Harlem night. Among the dimly lit tables are the characters that live taboo. The Maitre d', the showgirl, the muso. Hear their stories sung and their secrets whispered to the melodies of Harold Arlen. Direct from sell-out performances at Melbourne's The Butterfly Club and Perth's Underground Cabaret, Fancy Meeting You is an homage to the Master of the Great American Songbook and a journey into the clubs of 1930s New York. WEDNESDAY 7.00pm The Perth Jazz Society presents The Collaboratory with Adam James and Jade Crompton

As comfortable performing the likes of Stevie Wonder and Kimbra as they are Sinatra and Nina Simone, Adam James and Jade Crompton have long been staples of the Perth music scene. Moving seamlessly between jazz and the myriad of styles that make up 'contemporary music' these two artists come together tonight to bring you their unique take on jazz. THURSDAY 7.00pm Bob Sedergreen and friends (Melb)

Melbourne’s Bob Sedergreen is one of Australia’s jazz treasures with a career at the top going back decades. As a pianist, leader, composer and educator Bob has been an inspiration to many including Garry Lee who will perform with him on vibraphone and guitar at The Ellington on Thursday 7 March. Bob has accompanied international legends of jazz including Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Woods, Milt Jackson, Royce Campbell [Bunbury International Jazz Festival -2008], Nat Adderley and Jimmy Witherspoon and in the case of the last two mentioned, touring throughout Australia as their Musical Director.
