SUNDAY 5.30pm Hills Big Band

Swing doesn’t entirely describe the Hills Big Band (www.hillsbigband.com.au ). Sure they do the Basie and sometimes the Miller. And yes they do have two great vocalists to do the Sinatra and the Billie Holiday. The kicker is in the arrangements; with maestro Kieran Hurley at the helm, they have scoured the planet for the hip. Leaving no stone unturned, they bring you arrangements of numbers by the likes of Chick Corea, Charlie Mingus, Horace Silver, and Brian Setzer. SUNDAY 8.30pm Charmaine Jones and Mike Bevan

'From the first notes on the duo's debut album, a faster than usual, superbly scatted version of Noel Coward's Mad About the Boy, it's obvious we are close to virtuoso territory.' – The Australian. Captivating performances to sold-out audiences, an extraordinary musical prowess and an extended repertoire suggest a longstanding partnership, yet this enthralling pair have only been playing as a duo since late 2011. Vocalist Charmaine Jones and guitarist Mike Bevan released their debut album, A Small Hotel, in January 2012 to significant critical acclaim. Their second album Still in February 2013 did not disappoint, launched to a full house at one of Adelaide’s premier music venues and a 4 star review in The Australian. Jones and Bevan are indeed making their mark on the Australian jazz scene. The duo’s synergy comes from mutual respect and a deep love of jazz, the blues & Brazilian music. Offering an original take on jazz standards and singular arrangements of an eclectic range of enigmatic tunes, their music exudes a sensitivity and zest that does justice to its inspirations; Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, Diane Reeves and Russel Malone, Astrud Gilberto and Tom Jobim. He was also awarded the "Most Outstanding Contemporary Music Student" at WAAPA in his final year. 2012 brings a year full of hope. Timber and Steel Presents - Mark Wilkinson ‘Let The River Run’ Album Tour with special guest Little Bighorn. Mark Wilkinson presents his long awaited sophomore album ‘LetThe River Run’.  Following on from his debut ‘Truth Came Running’, which after two years still sits in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts, ‘Let The River Run’ captures that same soulful voice that’s seen Mark sell a remarkable 40,000 records independently.  With The Cat Empire’s Ollie McGill at the producer’s helm, it’s an album as diverse as it is fluid, fusing the big studio sound with the intimacy for which Mark is known.  Mark has already sold out shows across Australia and Europe and this trend is continuing at The Ellington.
