Trevor Watts - saxes and Veryan Weston - piano (UK) 8.00pm tonight at The Ellington

Don't miss this very special June 2012 visit to Australia, presented by The Ellington, Tura New Music and The Perth Jazz Society.

The duo has been developing it's music for many years now. The most recent performance was at the London Jazz Festival in November 2011 to a very enthusiastic audience. Before that, in June /July 2011 they did a concert tour in the USA ending at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, where we also had major success all the way through. Including a seperate visit in September to perform at the Guelph Jazz Festival in Ontario, Canada where they had a standing ovation (see review below). The new recording on the Emanem label is called "5 More Dialogues" and coming up in the New Year is a double CD recorded on our USA and Canadian tours in 2011.

They have been invited to take part in the Darling Harbour Jazz Festival in Sydney in June 2012, and having secured more concerts in the Sydney area. Although the music is totally improvised there is a definate feeling of construction and "form" to each piece and a strong Jazz feel. Rhythm and melody are equally as important as more abstract moments, and all these elements sit comfortably within each performance. Audiences find the music engaging and satisfying. And this partly is a result of both musicians long involvement in all forms of Jazz and music since the 1960's.

Growing together as masters of the British free jazz scene in the '70s, this duo disclosed the perfect emotional and performance synchronization of two masters who do not even need the hint of a glimpse to know where they are headed.

Veryan Weston's flair for tip-tapping, hectic rhythms—focused on the highest keys of his piano—found its twin in Trevor Watts' quick and crafty sharp notes, the alto saxophonist using his instrument's keys as if they were micro-drums; exploiting their percussive clicks as an additional enhancement of a series of sudden, high octave riffs.
Weston alternated contrapuntal phrasings, following the sax in a mad dance, with a hint of slightly slower variations showing how a sediment of Stravinskian influences has become one with the freest vocabulary of his own trademark.

The naturally flowing aura of the whole performance gave the impression of a joyful conversation between two friends who do not sentimentally remind themselves of the old times, but rather keep laughing and rejoicing about the endless creative possibilities of the here and now.

Tim Freedman's fireside chat 6pm and 9pm tonight at The Ellington

Part of the Perth Winter Arts series perthwinterarts.showmeperth.com.au

6pm - Bar tickets available
9pm - upstairs only

Tim Freedman’s Fireside Chat will be an evening of grand pianos, sweet melodies and a few pointed opinions. Already renowned as a raconteur between songs, this year Tim will link the tunes together with some extended yarns such as "  "How I learned to stop worrying and hate Triple J"  " and "Why did Caroline Overington called my father a Jewish accountant".

Tim Freedman is a singer/songwriter from Sydney, best known as the lead singer of The Whitlams, an ARIA Group of the Year with a string of gold & multi-platinum albums. His songs of charming well-crafted cynicism can sound as if Randy Newman had joined Crowded House.

His first themed solo tour in 2005 coincided with the launch of the DVD "The Whitlams Years 1992 - 2004" and told the story of the band's early days. His second, which culminated in six-night run at the Vanguard in Sydney in 2009 grouped his songs from across the albums according to which girlfriend they were written about.

It is no surprise that Tim's solo shows have become as popular as his band shows because The Whitlams’ success has always been about the emotional clout of his songs, which is laid bare when the rock adornments are removed.

The last few years saw Tim play The Whitlams'  "Best of" with every state orchestra around the country including seven nights with the Sydney Symphony at the Sydney Opera House. His 1997 album "Eternal Nightcap" was recently voted the No. 17 best Australian Album of all time on his favourite radio station JJJ.

Late last year Tim released his solo debut “Australian Idle” and toured with his new band "The Idle". The album is an unabashedly joyful 70's piano-pop outing, and the first single, a remake of Billy Field's “ You Weren't in Love With Me”,  is enjoying extensive airplay nationally.

The past two years have been busy for Jamie. Jamie has toured and recorded with Ari Hoenig, performed in New York and around Australia with George Garzone, performed with Charlie Haden, Eric Harland and Reuben Rogers as part of the Melbourne Jazz Festival, has recorded two new albums of standards with Paul Grabowsky and has maintained his own festival and club appearances around the globe with the Jamie Oehlers Quartet, Lost and Found, the Paul Grabowsky Sextet and Blowfish.
Jamie Oehlers has formed a quartet made up of three of Perth's finest young musicians, Nick Abbey (bass), Jacob Evans (drums) and Tal Cohen (piano). Jamie describes these young players as some of the best young talent he has ever come across. Playing with these really creative and energetic young musicians has been an inspiration for me. When we first played together I knew something special would come of this union. As we played, rehearsed, hung out and discussed music, we developed an understanding of the direction this group would take, as well as a deeper understanding of each other's unique influences and how they would integrate.
