This week at The Ellington

This week we welcome back Pugsley Buzzard from Sydney followed by a kickin' late show with Solomon Pitt, Eilse Lynelle and Empire before the ANZAC Day public holiday. Don't miss a fantastic weekend of shows with a Tom Waits tribute on Friday from Libby Hammer with the Blue Monk Quartet and Shameem featuring artist Phil Doncon on Saturday. Then we round off the weekend with something a little different with a show from Country Music rising music star Chelsea Basham.

MONDAY 7.00pm Song Lounge

Presented by North Street Music, Song Lounge features a selection of Australia's leading singer-songwriters together for an evening of wine, tapas and storytelling. Featuring Jay Grafton - her unadulterated passionate voice will draw you into her world as she sings to you her stories of life, love and adventure. Kate Gilbertson - her warm, fresh folk sound likens her to artists like Laura Marling, Bob Dylan and Regina Spektor with her lyrical mind and nature. Jacob Diamond - writes folk songs that are melodic and surprising. His song-writing, often with jazzy chords and structures, has kept audiences in his home town intrigued since he first took to the stage in 2009 at the delicate age of 15. And Billie Rogers - Named after Billie Holiday...its no wonder this Perth born songstress was blessed with such a soul stirring voice. Prepare to be booglarized by one of Australia`s finest consummate artists. Pugsley Buzzard has performed all over the world from the smoky jazz cellars of Berlin to downtown New Orleans the womb of the blues. Pugsley has dazzled and delighted audiences far wide with his unique blend of dark hoodoo blues, good time rollicking boogie and blazing stride style piano playing in conjunction with his huge mesmerising voice that can make the ladies sigh and grown men cry. WEDNESDAY 10.30 Empire with Elise Lynelle and Solomon Pitt

Empire has established itself as one of Perth's leading young bands with a tight band sound and a high energy performance level. After former singer Ryan Thornicroft decided to take a break, Empire have continued to perform with a range of guest singers. Tonight they are joined by the soul man Solomon Pitt in an Ellington first. Tonight they are joined by two very special guest including Elise Lynelle who presents her own unique style and charisma, she carries the influences of Motown, blues and soul. She is without doubt, an exceptional natural talent with a flair for all things RnB, Soul and Funk. Elise's vocal sounds will transform and delight your senses as she takes you on a musical journey featuring a blend of classic songs, mixed with exciting new repertoire. FRIDAY 7.00pm Tom Waits Tribute featuring Libby Hammer and Kim Anning's Blue Monk Quartet

Step right up step right up! Kim and Libby each have an extensive Tom Waits repertoire and together have a long history of successful tribute shows. Tonight they open a small window into the vast body of work that is Wait's music. Some of these  arrangements by Kim and Libby are in the Jazz genre whilst others remain  relatively unscathed and are fairly true to their origin.  This music will make you laugh, cry and may even evoke feelings you never knew you had. FRIDAY 10.30pm Aaron Malone and THE SPREAD

Joining the Spread this week will be the hauntingly talented Aaron Malone. Coming to prominence through his work with Perth powerhouse 'Village Kid' Aaron has previously graced the Ellington stage with the full bodied, raucous experience that was 'The Roast' but most recently has been making waves with his Perth based duo 'Whiskey Winter'. If Bon Iver, James Blake and Sting broke bread this man would be the final course, with vocal talents that will chill you to the bone Mr Malone must be heard. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 7.00pm Shameem with live artist Phil Doncon

“Some performers need the audience to listen long and carefully before anyone gets that there is something good going on. With Shameem you’d have to be locked in a lead-lined room to miss this lady’s sparkle. Her charisma and sheer energy on stage command attention and the listener is rewarded with a swinging, soulful sound – this is what jazz is all about.” – James Morrison, Australian jazz virtuoso. Shameem was kept busy during 2011 with touring in her home state of Western Australia and a song writing collaboration in the UK with a Grammy-winning producer James Bryan (Nelly Furtado). In 2012, fresh off the release of her self-titled debut album, she has had a whirlwind performance schedule: supporting such artists as Ronan Keating and Belinda Carlisle before audiences in the thousands and undertaking a successful national headlining tour.  She has been invited to perform at Toronto’s NXNE Festival 2012, Fuse Festival 2012, WAMi Festival 2012 and Canadian Music Week 2013. SATURDAY 10.30pm Late night groove series featuring Jade Crompton

Jade–Lori Crompton, daughter of Stax recording artist C L Blast's (known for his work on songs such as; Buster Brown's "Fannie Mae"; Don Gardner/Dee Dee Ford's "I Need Your Lovin'", Gladys Knight's "You Broke Your Promise" and the (fantastic) "Valerie" by Jackie & The Starlites). Her voice is said to be coloured by heartfelt Gospel tones, syrup smooth R&B, and playful melodies reminiscent of childhood Jazz influences. With a fusion of angelic melodies and sassy vocals this singer leaves her audience captured. The late night session will be an opportunity to discover the talent of local song bird Jade-Lori. SUNDAY 3.00pm Dare to Live - Sonja D'anne Vocal Studio

The Sonja D'anne Vocal Studio artists are headed away on a BUSKING tour in July and are happy to perform some of their tunes for you in their upcoming acoustic show. The tunes cover many decades of music, many genres and many emotions. Come on down and watch Alana Porter, Ellena Stacey, Julius Lutero, Megan Emslie, MJ, Rebecca Ella, Samuel Joseph Alexander and Sonja D'anne as they bring you another enjoyable Sunday afternoon session at the Ellington. SUNDAY 5.30pm Chelsea Basham

Chelsea Basham’s brilliant debut album ‘I Make My Own Sunshine’ has critics raving and country fans adopting this WA native. Since its release in August it has spawned three hit singles and two #1 videos on Country Music Channel (CMC). Music critic Bernard Zuel described Chelsea’s album as “genuinely soulful country” in Sydney’s Sun Herald and Melbourne’s The Age. Brisbane’s Courier Mail proclaimed “Basham has talent and a mellow soulful voice somewhere between Trisha Yearwood and The Dixie Chick’s Natalie Maines”. In January this year Chelsea was awarded the Golden Guitar for ‘Best New Talent of the Year’ at the CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia. She’s also a finalist in the upcoming 2013 CMC Music Awards and the 2013 APRA Professional Development Award which was won by Gotye in 2009. Chelsea Basham melds country traditions with broader influences. She’s bright and upbeat, a songwriter of merit, an artist of substance and an engaging live performer. She’s appeared at major events such as The Gympie Muster, The CMAA Country Music Awards and CMC Rocks The Hunter and returns home to WA for her first shows since the celebrated release of her debut album. We have a bevy of talented acts this week with a range of shows from all star interstate lineup presenting The Mingus Amongst Us this evening to the sublime Adelaide pairing of Charmaine Jones and Mike Bevan on Tuesday. The ever touring Stu Larsen with guest Natsuki Kurai is sold out Thursday and Sydeny based Nicki Gillis will be sure to put on a great show on Sunday. Add to that a double Friday/Saturday from James Flynn and his Little Big Band and a couple of red hot late shows and the week at The Ellington is complete.

MONDAY 7.00pm Mingus Amongst Us

Sydney baritone saxophonist Steve Fitzmaurice brings together some of the country's finest musicians for a night of Mingus mayhem! This 9 piece band features Steve (bari) and Michael Azzopardi (piano) from Sydney; Tim Wilson (alto) and Dan Beasy (Trumpet) from Melbourne; and Perth's own Carl Mackey (Tenor), Jeremy Greig (bone), James Cross (bone), Pete Jeavons (bass) and Chris Tarr (drums). Together they  will capture the fiery spirit of Charles Mingus in a night not to be missed! Click here for tickets

TUESDAY 7.00pm Charmaine Jones and Mike Bevan (Adelaide)

Vocalist Charmaine Jones and Guitarist Mike Bevan have been playing jazz, Brazilian and gospel music together for a number of years. Charmaine Jones has a unique style that draws on jazz, gospel, pop, r 'n' b, funk and choral music. Charmaine has worked alongside industry names such as Paul Grabowsky, James Morrison, Lillian Boute, Silvie Paladino, Naturally 7, Tina Arena, Glen Shorrick, Don Burrows and Michael Buble to name but a few. She created the highly successful “Gospo” choral ensemble, performed with the world-renowned Adelaide Connection and Latin ensemble Caliente among other projects. Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 7.00pm  STU LARSEN and NATSUKI KURAI - Sold Out 

Stu Larsen (AUS) first met Natsuki Kurai (JAPAN) by chance in a little venue in Tokyo two and a half years ago. This was the start of a special friendship, which has seen them play shows across Australia and Japan together. April will see the duo meet up again for a nationwide tour to release an acoustic EP recorded with Mark Myers in Cairns, Australia. Stu Larsen is a singer/songwriter from Bowenville, Queensland who has been travelling the world with his music for the last three years. He has spent the last two years on the road with England's Passenger and has just returned from his first headline tour of the UK and Europe. Natsuki Kurai is a genius harmonica player who you have to see to believe. He lives in Yokohama and plays 25+ shows a month with a wide variety of Japanese artists. THURSDAY 6.30pm Let's Hear it for Gen Y - for Music Rocks the Ellington 

On the back of themed events such as ‘Back to the 70’s’, ‘A Tribute to Led Zeppelin’ and ‘Those No Longer With Us’ at the start of the past few years at the Ellington for the young Music Rocks Australia musicians, the floor has been opened for these Gen Y performers to choose their own repertoire to showcase at this prestigious venue. The most talented young Rock musicians in W.A. hit the stage with a broad selection of songs illustrating their musical tastes and influences. From current day Pop to Retro Rock, not mention some very specific niche genres for musicians ageing from 10 to 20 years old. Young bands who in 2012 hit the stage for Australia’s Got Talent and the Bridgetown Blues festival and the some very new talent... along with some special invited groups from schools around W.A. including a new band from the Association for the Blind W.A. FRIDAY 7.00pm James Flynn and his Little Big Band

James Flynn returns this month from his European tour to present another packed-to-the-brim night of entertainment, in what will be his first 2013 little big band concert. The velvet voiced all-round entertainer and his seven-piece band bring together the old and the new in their latest show. They take the most popular sounds of current jazz stars, such as Michael BublĂ© and Jamie Cullum, and mix them with the timeless hits of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Chet Baker and Bobby Darin. Dd Soul will be gracing the Ellington stage once again playing a combination of R&B, Pop, funk, Blues tunes. Fronting Dd Soul will be Jaime hall, A talented singer from Canada. Come down and enjoy the fine drinks and food menu the Ellington Jazz Club has to offer. Along with some entertaining music and great vibes, it will be a great night out!!! Nicki Gillis performs the songs of the Women of the 60’s and 70’s who have made a difference such as Dusty Springfield, Nancy Sinatra, Carole King, Carly Simon, Cher and blends it with her own music that draws strongly from it’s country and blues roots. As a mother of two, Nicki has managed to forge a successful career in the music industry over many years of hard work. Her songs are a reflection of her life and that of many modern women. She shows during every performance that as a real woman you can still exude the sensuality and confidence that is so often forgotten, but not necessarily lost, by women today. As the winner of numerous awards including Australian Entertainment Industry (MO) Award, Nicki has had chart success both in Australia and Europe which includes a No. 1 hit on the UK hotdisc chart with “Be A Star”, a cheeky upbeat song written by Nicki depicting her life as a performer and advice given along the way. While we're waiting for that, we have another great week of music with a single launch from Rick Webster on Tuesday, debut shows from Ricki Malet's band - Malmac on Wednesday, Paul Gioia's CD launch Thursday, new late groove backing band THE SPREAD on Friday with special guest Danny Martin and an all star band on Monday week with "The Mingus Amongst Us" - Plus much, much more... It's like a festival every week at The Ellington!!!

MONDAY 7.00pm Jamie Oehlers Quartet

Saxophonist Jamie Oehlers' latest album, "Smoke and Mirrors" featuring the incredible American drummer Ari Honeig, recently won "Best Australian Jazz Album" in Rhythm magazine's readers poll. Tonight Jamie and his group will be performing tracks from the album with a few new tunes that are hot off the press. This will be Jamie and Tal's last performance together before they head to the UK and Europe to perform - Always dynamic and energetic, come down to be recharged! TUESDAY 7.00pm Rick Webster single launch

Rick has been releasing his own material since 2010 which has seen him travel overseas and receive 2 nominations for both West Australian Jazz Artist of the year and Jazz Song of the year in 2012. He has released 2 EP's in 2011 and 2012 featuring both instrumental and vocal tracks. Fresh off of winning the Jazz category of the International John Lennon Songwriting Competition, Rick will be presenting new songs as well as songs from his previous EP's in an all new format featuring the amazing Victoria Newton on Vocals. Carl Mackey and Ricki Malet team up with Tal Cohen, Pete Jeavons and Chris Tarr to perform some high-energy music written by themselves and some of their favourite modern composers. After years of collaboration in other groups the guys have finally gotten together to share musical ideas in this quintet setting. THURSDAY 7.00pm Paul Gioia CD Launch - Blue Sky

For decades, Paul Gioia has been one of Western Australia's leading blues and gospel pianists, having wowed audiences with his high-energy music and evocative ballads. With two solo CDs already under his belt, Mercy Train and Rising Sea, Paul now launches his third solo CD, Blue Sky. With help from some of Perth's top musoes, Paul has completed his most challenging project to date. Each song has been allowed to speak for itself, from New Orleans brass band romps and searing electric blues to haunting ballads, and even tipping the hat to African grooves. The result is something Paul is incredibly proud of. FRIDAY 10.30pm Danny Martin and THE SPREAD

Spread those earlobes and get ready for an out of mind, body altering experience. Emerging from the darkest depths of Hip Hop and the freshest buds of Soul and RnB The Spread will toast you and cover you in their sacarine, sticky goodness. Before long you'll be back for another helping. Featuring some of Perth's tastiest condiments, Sean Phillips (Drums), Roy Martinez (Bass), Harry Winton (Guitar) and Lewis Moody (Keys), The Spread is your new Friday night breakfast buffet at the Ellington. This week joining The Spread will be Perth mainstay and forerunner of Funk, Hip Hop and everything delectable, Danny "D$" Martin. Danny has been at the helm of many of Perth's staple powerhouse groups including Detour, The Dynamites and recently the most-controversial F**kFunk. Ali has held a trio residency with Graham Wood and other venerable Perth Jazz musicians such as Sam Anning, Dane Alderson and Carl Mackey at the Subiaco Hotel for thirteen years, supported Vince Jones, Grace Knight and Marcia Hynes and consistently works with the state’s top Jazz Musicians. Recent shows have received critical acclaim including Minor Major Marlene - based on the work of Marlene Dietrich and Franklin - a tribute to Aretha Franklin. Click here for tickets

Join one of our hottest young divas as she rips up another late show at The Ellington. It's hard to believe that Cristal made her debut for The Ellington late sets only 3 years ago, but in that time has emerged as one of Perth's most in demand RnB and Soul singers. SUNDAY 5.30pm Jake Dennis featuring Mint Jazz Band

Jake Dennis is the charismatic front man for Mint Jazz Band (www.mintjazzband.blogspot.com), a fresh Perth jazz/swing/blues/contemporary quartet which features funky Australian pianist Mark Cunniffe, superb Guernsey drummer Chris Marquand, and expressive Singaporean double bassist Malcolm Mah. They have performed together regularly at Wolf Lane and Wild Fig as well as at The Byrneleigh and the Town of Cambridge’s Music in the Park and always provide a sophisticated and memorable show.
