We have a bevy of talented acts this week with a range of shows from all star interstate lineup presenting The Mingus Amongst Us this evening to the sublime Adelaide pairing of Charmaine Jones and Mike Bevan on Tuesday. The ever touring Stu Larsen with guest Natsuki Kurai is sold out Thursday and Sydeny based Nicki Gillis will be sure to put on a great show on Sunday. Add to that a double Friday/Saturday from James Flynn and his Little Big Band and a couple of red hot late shows and the week at The Ellington is complete.
MONDAY 7.00pm Mingus Amongst Us
Sydney baritone saxophonist Steve Fitzmaurice brings together some of the country's finest musicians for a night of Mingus mayhem! This 9 piece band features Steve (bari) and Michael Azzopardi (piano) from Sydney; Tim Wilson (alto) and Dan Beasy (Trumpet) from Melbourne; and Perth's own Carl Mackey (Tenor), Jeremy Greig (bone), James Cross (bone), Pete Jeavons (bass) and Chris Tarr (drums). Vocalist Charmaine Jones and Guitarist Mike Bevan have been playing jazz, Brazilian and gospel music together for a number of years. Charmaine Jones has a unique style that draws on jazz, gospel, pop, r 'n' b, funk and choral music. Charmaine has worked alongside industry names such as Paul Grabowsky, James Morrison, Lillian Boute, Silvie Paladino, Naturally 7, Tina Arena, Glen Shorrick, Don Burrows and Michael Buble to name but a few. She created the highly successful “Gospo” choral ensemble, performed with the world-renowned Adelaide Connection and Latin ensemble Caliente among other projects. Click here for tickets
WEDNESDAY 7.00pm STU LARSEN and NATSUKI KURAI - Sold Out
Stu Larsen (AUS) first met Natsuki Kurai (JAPAN) by chance in a little venue in Tokyo two and a half years ago. This was the start of a special friendship, which has seen them play shows across Australia and Japan together. April will see the duo meet up again for a nationwide tour to release an acoustic EP recorded with Mark Myers in Cairns, Australia. Stu Larsen is a singer/songwriter from Bowenville, Queensland who has been travelling the world with his music for the last three years. He has spent the last two years on the road with England's Passenger and has just returned from his first headline tour of the UK and Europe. Natsuki Kurai is a genius harmonica player who you have to see to believe. He lives in Yokohama and plays 25+ shows a month with a wide variety of Japanese artists. THURSDAY 6.30pm Let's Hear it for Gen Y - for Music Rocks the Ellington
On the back of themed events such as ‘Back to the 70’s’, ‘A Tribute to Led Zeppelin’ and ‘Those No Longer With Us’ at the start of the past few years at the Ellington for the young Music Rocks Australia musicians, the floor has been opened for these Gen Y performers to choose their own repertoire to showcase at this prestigious venue. The most talented young Rock musicians in W.A. hit the stage with a broad selection of songs illustrating their musical tastes and influences. From current day Pop to Retro Rock, not mention some very specific niche genres for musicians ageing from 10 to 20 years old. Young bands who in 2012 hit the stage for Australia’s Got Talent and the Bridgetown Blues festival and the some very new talent... along with some special invited groups from schools around W.A. including a new band from the Association for the Blind W.A. FRIDAY 7.00pm James Flynn and his Little Big Band
James Flynn returns this month from his European tour to present another packed-to-the-brim night of entertainment, in what will be his first 2013 little big band concert. The velvet voiced all-round entertainer and his seven-piece band bring together the old and the new in their latest show. They take the most popular sounds of current jazz stars, such as Michael Bublé and Jamie Cullum, and mix them with the timeless hits of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Chet Baker and Bobby Darin. Dd Soul will be gracing the Ellington stage once again playing a combination of R&B, Pop, funk, Blues tunes. Fronting Dd Soul will be Jaime hall, A talented singer from Canada. Nicki Gillis performs the songs of the Women of the 60’s and 70’s who have made a difference such as Dusty Springfield, Nancy Sinatra, Carole King, Carly Simon, Cher and blends it with her own music that draws strongly from it’s country and blues roots. As a mother of two, Nicki has managed to forge a successful career in the music industry over many years of hard work. Her songs are a reflection of her life and that of many modern women.
