Pierre Bensusan (France) 8.00pm tonight at The Ellington

French guitar virtuoso Pierre Bensusan makes a return visit to Australia in March 2012, following the stunning success of his first in 2009.

Pierre has long been acknowledged as one of the finest guitarists on the planet, a fearless improviser who constantly explores the depth of his own voice in a way that transcends his instrument. After decades at the forefront of innovation on his instrument, Pierre continues to go from strength to strength - with the readers of Guitar Player Magazine USA voting him as "Best World Music Guitarist" in 2008.
If “world music” is music that pays tribute to the spirit of a collection of human beings through distinct rhythms, traditional instruments and harmonic colors, Pierre can be recognized as one of the most eloquent and diverse world musicians of our time. His solo concerts take the listener throughout the palette of emotions, between anxiety, serenity and deep joy, with compositions that often start with melodies inspired by various folk traditions. These ideas are developed into compositions of astonishing complexity, creating beautiful and sensuous sounds with a sense of orchestration that goes far beyond what is generally thought of as guitar music.

Born in Oran, French-Algeria, in 1957, when France was decolonizing its Empire, Pierre Bensusan's family moved to Paris when he was 4. He began formal studies on piano at the age of 7 and at 11 taught himself guitar. Influenced in those early days by the folk revival blooming in Britain, France and North America, Bensusan began first to explore his own diverse musical heritage and then moved to the horizons beyond. At 17 he signed his first recording contract, and one year later his first album Pres de Paris won the Grand Prix du Disque upon his debut at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland.
Described by the L.A. Times as "one of the most unique and brilliant acoustic guitar veterans in the world music scene today", Pierre Bensusan was voted "Best World Music Guitar Player in 2008" by Guitar Player Magazine Readers Choice. His name became synonymous with contemporary acoutsic guitar genius, long before the terms New Age, New Acoustic Music or World Music were invented. He has the ability to make a single guitar sound like an entire band as he brings the audience on a mesmerizing musical journey. And yet, Bensusan is more than what any musician or music lover expects from a guitarist. He is a composer as well as a bilingual and a brave improvisational vocalist, melding whistles and resonant low notes with something like his own scat technique.

There is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. His "manner" of playing defies classification - crossing world, classical, jazz, traditional, folk and more. None can be isolated as simply “Brazilian”, "Arabic" or “French”; rather, they represent our world in its current state, a world sharing itself, fusing cultures together in ways we have never experienced. Not to be missed!

David Ades - A Glorious Uncertainty CD launch 6.00pm tonight at The Ellington

David Ades is an Australian alto saxophonist renowned for his unique and distinctive style of playing. From improvisational jazz to collaborations with classical orchestras, Ades has performed worldwide for over thirty years as a soloist and has collaborated with esteemed figures such as Wynton Marsalis, Dr John and Joe Locke as well as Australians including Paul Grabowsky, Dale Barlow, Roger Frampton, Vince Jones and The Cat Empire.

Abandoning the staid streets of Sydney – and his studies at the conservatory – Ades moved to New York in 1981 at the age of 19. Precocious and eager for visceral experience, he spent nearly every night for the next three years sitting in at The Blue Book on 145th St witnessing greats such as Jack McDuff, Sonny Stitt, Roy Haynes, Stanley Turrentine and Freddie Hubbard. Alternatively inspired and humbled by what he heard, it was Harlem that essentially taught Ades to play.

In 1991 he released his debut album Bird on a Head, which was acclaimed as “groundbreaking new music”. Living in Asia for much of the 90s with his wife, the Australian painter Melissa Thompson, Ades appeared regularly at jazz clubs   and festivals in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand with such luminaries as Arturo Sandoval, Mike Stern and Indra Lesmana.

Returning to Australia in 1998, he relocated to Bangalow, a small town in the hills of Byron Bay, where he formed the band FATS with Scott Tinkler, Greg Sheehan and Thierry Fosmalle. Together they’ve released two albums, FATS and Juicy Shoots, and have performed at the Wangaratta International Jazz Festival, The Brisbane Biennial and The Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival. From 1999 to 2004 Ades also taught saxophone and jazz studies at Southern Cross University.

In 2000 Ades teamed up with his old mentor Treloar to perform SHADES: In Memoriam Roger Frampton at the Sydney Opera House and later at the Wangarratta International Jazz Festival, which was also recorded for ABC’s Listening Room. It was at the 2000 Wangarratta Festival that he was invited to perform with New York bassist and composer Mark Helias and his trio Open Loose. Playing informally with Helias and tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby during his yearly pilgrimages to New York, in May 2011 Ades decided to record his second album, titled A Glorious Uncertainty, with Helias, Malaby and drummer Gerald Cleaver.

In 2008 Ades recorded an album with saxophonist Dale Barlow, formerly of Art Blakey Jazz Messengers, and bassist Essiet Essiet, along with Joe Locke on vibraphone and Sean Wayland on piano. Along with yearly stints in New York, Ades also regularly visits Europe, recently performing in Paris, Amsterdam, Italy and London.

Following another recent performance in Italy in 2011 Ades toured with Sydney composer and tenor saxophonist Matt Keegan in support of their celebrated album The Matt Keegan Trio Meets David Ades. He also regularly performs with the popular Australian group the Cat Empire in Australia and in 2007 he was invited to be the featured soloist with The Cat Empire and the Australia Youth Orchestra at an event staged at the Iwaki Auditorium at Melbourne’s South Bank. He also helped facilitate the improvisation workshops with the orchestra.

Alternatively ferocious and tender, Ades approaches his instrument with a fervour and abandon as beautiful as it is shocking. Still willingly teetering on the edge of the musical abyss, he shows no signs of slowing down.

Featuring Jamie Oehlers (tenor), Pete Jeavons (bass) and Jacob Evans (drums)

Rocksteady 11.30pm tonight at The Ellington

Creating some of the most exciting hybrids of music in its wake, the emergence and diversity of Australian hip hop is taking on many forms as it develops. And as the pioneering acts continue to push the envelope, a second generation of artists - ones influenced by the first wave of Australian hip hop - are emerging as their progeny.

Recording his first song with Downsyde's Dazastah at the unbelievable age of 13; Paulie P is part of the next generation of Australian hip hop artists who are stepping up to the level of Australia's best, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with their influences.

Adaptable and inventive, Paulie P earned his respect on stage supporting Aussie hip hop royalty like Downsyde, Drapht and Hilltop Hoods, but found equally rabid audiences supporting rock bands like Birds Of Tokyo. Undoubtedly, hip hop's connection with music fans in Australia crosses almost every musical line.

Seeing the limitless potential of a full live act, Paulie P & Rocksteady made their debut in 2010. The sound of the 7-piece band brought stronger tones of funk and soul, layered with breezy dub rhythms and a slick jazz undertone, to an already potent hip hop attack. More and more traces of the band's relaxed coastal upbringing began to glitter and shape the vibe of songs. With the human element also came a virtuosic dexterity and control of dynamics that opened the gates for the band to explore new territory - which they did.

And as they put the finishing touches on their debut album Until That Time (due December), Paulie P & Rocksteady are continuing to evolve as a live act, in an ever-evolving music scene that is becoming less about being a scene and more about music. The further they explore, the more decisively they hit the mark.

PAULIE P & ROCKSTEADY are...
Dale Boaden - guitar
Sid Patni - Keys
Robin Murray - Double Bass
Garo Tanzi - Drums
Sam Nafie - Vocals
Paulie P - MC

Hetty Kate (Melbourne) 8.00pm tonight at The Ellington

Jazz vocalist Hetty Kate is coming to Perth for two shows on the weekend of 24th and 25th March. Recently returned from performing overseas in 2011, she is currently based in Melbourne and this will be her first visit to Perth in 17 years.

With her distinctive voice, and pure tone Hetty is often compared to a young Peggy Lee, or Doris Day, and present day chanteuses such as Stacey Kent, Jane Monheit and Silje Nergaard. Hetty’s phrasing and sweet swinging style has enabled her to perform in many countries around the world, including Chile, Vietnam, Switzerland, Hong Kong and North America. Whilst fronting many smaller jazz bands, Hetty is often asked to perform with Big Bands such as The B# Big Band (AU); The Pearly Shells (AU) and The Stray Katz (HK). Also in the last five years she has appeared on seven albums, four of which are with her own bands, and three were released in 2011.

The most recent albums stretch across many retro jazz stylings, and are from her three Melbourne bands “The Irwell Street String Band”, a western all-string foursome; “The Hetty Kate Quintet”, a straight-ahead jazz group playing standards from the mid forties and early fifties and “The Twenty 20s”, a quirky beatnik lounge exotica group. All her bands though quite different in instrumentation, arrangement and sound, are joined by a thread of hip vintage style and interesting song choice and Hetty is looking forward to showcasing her favourites from these albums on her visit to the West Coast.

For her concert at Perth’s premier Jazz Club, The Ellington, Hetty will be joined by Lucky Oceans (pedal steel guitar), Ray Walker (guitar), Karl Florisson (double bass) and Chris Tarr (drums).

Late night groove series featuring Ladywood and Speekeasy 11.30pm tonight at The Ellington

Speekeasy

If "The Jam" fell under a genre of music, then the group "Speekeasy" would be the first to use it to describe their style of music.

Based in Perth, WA, "Speekeasy" consists of Rae (MC, vocalist, producer, musician), Sam (musician, vocalist), and Hyclass (MC, DJ, songwriter) who have been together as a crew for almost five years. The group is truly a family affair, having come together after working on their own muical endeavours to form a tight jam collective.

This arrangement allows each member to bounce and blend their individual tastes to create live up-tempo beats, strong originals and thrown together bits and pieces to showcase their ubnique musical perormance.

Followed up with the sounds are colourful themes of lyrical content, ranging from personal matters of the heart to cheeeky everyday topics, and everything else inbetween.

The fusion of all this and the hip hop, soul, funk and reggae sound borrowings have also allowed the group to spread themselves quite respectfully across the board on the local music scene.

Ladywood

Emerged only November 2011, Ladywood are a new 6-piece soul outfit on Perth's original music scene
SOUND: Drawing much from influences such as; Erykah Badu, Corinne Bailey-Rae, India Arie and Lauryn Hill, Ladywood can easily be slid into the neo-soul genre. The sound is smooth and easily lends itself to hip hop, soul and roots. Two back up singers provide a well-woven tapestry of harmonies, a perfect canvas for the storyteller songwriting style.

Ladywood is fronted by Farren Wood. Previous musical achievements include; singer/writer for 'The Bigness' (WAM nominee for best funk act 2009) as well as recognition in her own original endeavours (nominee in WAM song of the year 2010). The band is made up of familiar faces on the music scene; John Brown (The Accumulated Gestures, The Co-Lab band, Big Old Bears,The Amani Consort), Andrew James Williams (The Empty Cup Band, James Teague, Namoowolf Downs) and John Leotta (Upskirt Shazaam), with Geetha Periakarpan and Carrie Pereira on vocals.

So what started as an idea, red wine and diary scribblings, has now become Ladywood- and with tracks written to the sounds of local producer Rae, and a track by Dazastah, they're off to a smooth start...
