This week at The Ellington


Freddie Grigson is launching his new CD, Carl Mackey is playing the music of Wayne Shorter and James Sandon will be leading the soulful TLC trio - and that's all before the weekend. A double late night Deuces will be a treat after the VP's (Friday) and Howie Morgan and Melody Whittle's Motown show on Saturday. All rounded off with the sublime Russell Holmes Trio on Sunday. Make sure you come along tonight and support the Rodrigues family as they commence their tough journey through cancer treatment. Downstairs is sold out but every cent counts and tickets for the upstairs bar will be valid for downstairs as people move on (music until 11pm)

MONDAY 7.00pm Rodrigues family fundraiser - upstairs bar only
Marc Rodrigues is a Perth drummer who has just found out that he has cancer. Marc is 36 years old with a wife, Hayley Rodrigues, and 2 daughters Mya 10 and Shay 5. This fundraiser is to help him and his family get through the treatment when their income will be very limited. Upstairs bar only - tickets at the door

TUESDAY 8.00pm Freddie Grigson CD launch
Freddie Grigson is one of Australia’s most versatile and in demand guitar players. His guitar virtuosity has earned him a reputation as a melodic improviser of the first order, one whose own voice always rings true no matter what genre he is playing in. Freddie is launching his latest CD “ PAST AND PRESENT ”. His band comprises of Tal Cohen on piano, Karl Florisson on bass and Jacob Evans on the drums. The night will feature all the music from the album plus some new compositions. Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Speak No Evil - A Wayne Shorter Tribute with The Carl Mackey Quartet
Hot on the heels of releasing his long awaited debut album as leader, Carl Mackey returns to The Ellington stage to pay homage to the one and only Wayne Shorter. The iconic saxophonist is celebrated as one of jazz’s greatest composers with many of his works earning ‘standard’ status.
Tonight Carl, with his formidable quartet, will pay tribute to the great man and his music with a focus on his iconic 60’s period as both bandleader and sideman. The quartet will be joined by exciting young trumpeter Ricki Malet who is fast earning a reputation as one of the country’s finest. THURSDAY 8.00pm TLC Organ Trio with special guest James Sandon
This band is a fine addition to the scene and The Ellington welcomes their return performance for another fantastic session of blues and soul in the organ trio tradition of Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott, Joey Defrancesco, Larry Golding and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Definitely the coolest and funkiest blues based combo in town. James Sandon (sax), Freddie Grigson (guitar), Tom O'Halloran (organ) and Chris Tarr (drums). Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 8.00pm Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys
The VPs are a six-piece Perth band dedicated to the performance of exciting live shows that have something for everyone. Their shows are always sold out as the boys take the crowd through a mood reminiscent of the Rat Pack or Louis Prima in Las Vegas in the 50’s – swinging,  jazz, rocking rhythm and blues and  a little bit of good old boogie woogie. The Velvet Playboys feature six of Western Australia’s finest musicians: Adam Hall (vocals and trumpet), Tim Forster (tenor sax), Mike Cartwright (trombone), Len Whittle (piano), Graham Local (bass) and Joe Whittle (drums). Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 11.30pm Deuces with Cristal Phillips and Solomon Pitt
Perth's king and queen of soul join forces to bring you Deuces. A night of simply the best R&B and Soul Duets. Some favourites new and old, borrowed from the legends themselves to leave you breathless and craving more. Musically connected since childhood, the voices of Cristal Phillips and Solomon Pitt innately compliment and tastefully intertwine, a true delight to listening ears. SATURDAY 8.00pm A tribute to Motown with Howie Morgan and Melody Whittle
Howie and Melody team up their soulful vocal talents to pay tribute to the many hits from the 60's and 70's Motown era. This famous Detroit record company produce many hits from artists such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5,  The Temptations, The Funk Brothers and Gladys Knight & the Pips. Once again a great band will be in session with the top session players in town. A must see show that will have you singing along for sure. Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 6.00pm The Russell Holmes Trio
The Russell Holmes Trio explore the art and essence of the piano trio with their own well defined flavour and personality. The group swings hard and grooves with reminiscent vibes of the Oscar Peterson Trio as well as more contemporary groups like the Brad Mehldau Trio, pays homage to the likes of Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock and yet stands alone with its own treatment and inimitable expression. 2001 WAMI award winning Jazz Pianist, Russell Holmes has performed with many great jazz ensembles including MPS, Frames of Minds, The Raggabillys, Hip Mo Toast and artists such as Dale Barlow, Red Rodney and many others. Most recent highlights would include being invited to perform at the Celimontana Jazz Festival in Rome, Italy  ( July2006 ) and supporting James Taylor at the infamous Leeuwin concert. Click here for tickets
