This week at The Ellington


STOP PRESS!! Latin Sundays are back this week with the mighty 10 piece Nueva Salsa Orchestra. The tables are coming out and it will be a latin dance extravaganza from 9-12pm. We also feature a range of new shows this week including the fantastic Australian/Scottish collaboration on Tuesday between Alister Spence (piano) and Raymond MacDonald (alto/soprano sax). John Bannister and The Charisma Brothers Official CD launch is on Wednesday and Nicola Milan's very special Fringe World show on Thursday. Then into the weekend with a farewell show for FLD before she takes a break on maternity duties, followed by a fantastic new show from Joe Southwell and Samie Nafie - earth-shaking, soul-infused R&B. Saturday will feature the 40th birthday celebrations of Simon Jeans and Howie Morgan, followed by old school funk from BUMP and a big double Sunday to round out the weekend. 

TUESDAY 8.00pm Spence - MacDonald duo and Gilded

Alister Spence (Australia) piano, Raymond MacDonald (Scotland) alto/soprano sax. This duo dives joyfully headlong into open improvisation and realtime composition. Theirs is a musical universe where beauty and tension, simplicity and density happily co-exist. Spence and MacDonald have developed a friendship and mutual admiration over the last 10 years, collaborating on projects including the Raymond MacDonald International Big Band, Tokyo 2008, featuring Satoko Fujii, Jim O’Rourke, Michiyo Yagi (‘an unqualified success’ The WIRE U.K.), and Alister Spence Quartet (Europe tours 2009, 2011). ‘Inspired Music Making’  4 stars Jazzwise (UK). ‘Wildly restless…a euphoric ridge of high pressure’ Bad Alchemy (Germany). Gilded is a new, beguiling and often beautiful musical project exploring texture and dislocated melody. Matt Rösner based in Myalup is arguably one of Western Australia’s most renowned experimental musicians. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm John Bannister and The Charisma Brothers Official CD launch

WAMI Award winning Trumpet player and vocalist John Bannister formed cool jazz n blues outfit THE CHARISMA BROTHERS in 2003.  Come and join John and the Brothers as they officially launch original works recorded over the last decade. The music largely inspired by John's travels encompass ambient, bossa & jazz n blues. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 8.00pm Nicola Milan

“Forbidden Moments” – An evening of jazz & romance. A PERTH FRINGE FESTIVAL EVENT. Fancy an evening of romance? Join sultry jazz songstress Nicola Milan and her sizzling hot band for your sneak preview of Nicola’s highly anticipated debut album “Forbidden Moments”. Sophisticated, sensual and blissfully romantic, Nicola’s music will have you reminiscing about long days at the beach and nights full of stars. FRIDAY 8.00pm Fiona Lawe Davies 4

Vocalist and Ellington regular Fiona Lawe Davies is back in February 2013 in her inimitable quartet lineup with Chris Foster, Nick Abbey & Michael Perkins. Those who have already witnessed her superb live performance need no introduction to Fiona’s perfectly crafted stage presence and uniquely pure vocal style. Chris Foster (piano), Nick Abbey (double bass) and Michael Perkins (drums) are standout artists on the Perth jazz scene with extraordinary facility and sincerity. In collaboration, the quartet bring you jazz with some indie grit – a beguiling blend of their interpretations of some favourite jazz standards alongside original arrangements of songs ranging from post punk to pop via trip hop. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 11.30pm Bass In Yo Face All Over the Place with Joe Southwell and Sam Nafie

Joe and Sam team up to bring you a night of earth-shaking, soul-infused R&B! Sam’s raw and organic tone has made him one of Perth’s most versatile vocalists while Joe has been energetically pushing the low-end frequencies in many bands around town. Armed with a phenomenal band, these two are pumped to bring some of their favourite tunes to the Ellington stage. The repertoire will explore a range of sub-genres, showcasing tunes from various artists including Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, the Roots, Jamiroquai and Stevie Wonder. From 70s-flavoured funk to neo-soul to ground-thumping beats – and anything and everything in between! SATURDAY 8.00pm Howie Morgan and Simon Jeans

Old Man Blues Guitar Band: set Feb 2, 1973. Howie Morgan & Simon Jeans join forces to put on a sizzling showcase of sweet soulful singing and guitar slinging. The two Perth guitarists, singers &/or trombone owners were both born on this very same day some 40 years ago (technically Howie is the eldest being born in NZ, go easy on the old guy), so expect to hear and see a bit of a musical party onstage. They will be turning off their hearing aids and turning the amps up to 11 to serve some wailing doses of stinging electric voodoo, acoustic guitar, lap steel… you name it. Howie promises to play a slide guitar solo behind his back with his false teeth at the same time, and Simon is even going to sing a couple of tunes if he can stand back up on his walking frame after fiddling with his effects pedals. Joining these cranky old blues dogs will be the ever youthful team of Matt Branton on bass, Chris Tarr on drums & Graham Wood on keys as well as a few special guests TBA. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series featuring B U M P

Your Saturday late night is in safe hands this week with another dance party driven by the express train of groove BUMP. Come and join Hans, Adam, Trevor, Roy, Hussy, Ricki and Dan as they power through a late night session of feel-good discotized and funkified hits. Warning: you won’t hear any Neo-Soul at this gig - it’s old-school all the way. Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 6.00pm Tal Cohen Quartet

Regarded as one of the most exciting young jazz pianists around, Tal Cohen is a fine talent who brings to the stage a refreshing approach to jazz piano, not just as a pianist but also as a refined composer. Tonight at The Ellington Jazz Club, the Tal Cohen quartet will perform for you a selection of tracks from the album Yellow Sticker. This promises to be a unique night of music highly anticipated by all members of the quartet. ‘Tal is a very talented and disciplined piano improviser. SUNDAY 8.30pm Nueva Salsa Orchestra

The Nueva Salsa Orchestra was formed in 2011 by it’s Musical Director and Trumpet player Marty Pervan, and they have a reputation as the hottest Cuban and New Yorkan salsa band this side of Latin America. The NSO is comprised of some of Australia’s finest musicians who have all performed in musical projects both nationally and internationally including an incredible experience as the backing band for Columbian superstar Wilson Saoko in 2011. With a repertoire consisting of high energy salsas, mambos and cha chas, the NSO are guaranteed to have you moving your body to the infectious rhythms of their fabulous percussion section, sparkling horns, extraordinary piano and bass grooves, and the sublime vocal talents of Adolfo Chavez and Kate Pervan. This week at The Ellington


Get set for a fantastic Australia Day long weekend at The Ellington including the late night Sunday show featuring Cartel and a great range of music for all. We welcome back the Horizon Art Orchestra for a new show "Sound of Perth", The enigmatic Pugsley Buzzard will feature on Friday followed by a debut late show from Dharshini Muru. Cian Caton returns from Melbourne for a Saturday late show and then a big Sunday with All Join in at 3pm, (tell your mum), The Shoesmith Nu-Jazz Ensemble at 6pm and Cartel at 9.30pm. 

TUESDAY 8.00pm Celebration of the music of Whitney Houston with Amanda Dee (DOWNSTAIRS SOLD OUT)

Following on from the success of the 2012 shows and the killer vocal performance by Amanda, we have decided to do it again. Come and celebrate the music of one of the most iconic and celebrated singers of the last 30 years. Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all time. Her awards include two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards in her lifetime. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Horizon Art Orchestra

Sounds of Perth - Horizon Art Orchestra are one of Perth's finest original music ensembles, a fifteen piece big band committed to presenting edgy, original large-ensemble music. On this special occasion, HAO composers Elliott Hughes and Daniel Connor have put together a collection of works by local Perth based musicians and arranged them for the unique instrumentation of the Horizon Art Orchestra. Covering a broad range of styles from jazz to latin to funk to dubstep, and featuring the virtuosic improvisations of a number of soloists, this concert will be a musical feast for your ears. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 8.00pm Anea Duratovic Quintet – Disney Jazz

Beginning with “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937, Disney has created a very long line of classic movies which have hosted another very long line of classic tunes. Tonight, the Anea Duratovic Quintet will showcase a selection of the most memorable melodies including songs from “Toy Story”, “Mary Poppins”, “The Jungle Book” and many more. Having recently graduated from the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Anea is becoming one of Perth’s finest jazz vocalist’s. FRIDAY 8.00pm Pugsley Buzzard (Sydney)

Prepare to be booglarized by one of Australia`s finest consummate artists. Pugsley Buzzard has performed all over the world from the smoky jazz cellars of Berlin to downtown New Orleans the womb of the blues. Pugsley has dazzled and delighted audiences far wide with his unique blend of dark hoodoo blues, good time rollicking boogie and blazing stride style piano playing in conjunction with his huge mesmerizing voice that can make the ladies sigh and grown men cry. FRIDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series featuring Dharshini Muru

Be prepared to be lured in by the smooth sultry voice of Dharshini Muru as she serenades you with music from her individual and eclectic taste. Drawing from her inspirations such as Alicia Keys, Corinne Bailey Rae and joined by an amazing group of musicians, don’t miss this up and coming artist who has played in various venues around Perth. SATURDAY 8.00pm Victoria Newton and Jamie Oehlers

Multi award winning artists Victoria Newton and Jamie Oehlers unite for an exciting concert of new arrangements of Jazz repertoire. This combination is a debut for Perth audiences and will feature the talents of two of Perth's finest musical exports. Victoria Newton: This effervescent Australian vocalist has delighted audiences worldwide with her unique combination of energy, spontaneity and musicianship. Her rich, sensual voice and powerful stage presence are summed up by Steve Rubie (owner of London's 606 Club) when he describes her as having "a fabulous strong clear voice with a great sense of time and an even greater sense of fun!". Jamie Oehlers: Winner of the 2003 World Saxophone Competition and 2007 Australian Jazz Artist of the Year His last CD with “Lost and Found” was a final nominee for an ARIA award and also for an Australian Independent Records Award as Jazz Album of the Year. SATURDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series with Cian Caton

Returning from Melbourne for 1 Perth show only, Cian is a favourite of the late night groove session. Cian has grown immensely as an artist over the last five years and delivers a Soul, R&B, jazz and all round feel good sound in her own unique style. Born into a strong musical family, Cian naturally took the same path having a deep love and passion for singing. Drawing from influences such as Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, D'angelo and Stevie Wonder,  Cian knows how to keep you on your toes and wanting more. Graham Wood - Keys, Harry S. SUNDAY 3.00pm All Join In

By popular demand due to the overwhelming popularity of the last sing-playalong. All Join in - Singing the Cities - the day after Australia Day Special Jazzy Sing/Playalong hosted by June and Stella with Graham Wood and Lew Smith. Ever longed for the good old days when the whole family gathered around the piano to all join in making music? Couldn’t sing – nobody minded.  Couldn’t play – just grab a Kazoo! We didn’t know it then but have since found out that groupb singing/playing is not only good fun but it’s also good for health – mental and physical. SUNDAY 6.00pm The Shoesmith Nu-Jazz Ensemble

The Shoesmith Nu-Jazz Ensemble is an eclectic group that explores a mixture of standards and orgiginals led by Gavin Shoesmith on double bass. Influenced by Charles Mingus, band leader Shoesmith takes an improvisational approach to composition allowing for a spontaneous organic structure to both his tunes and the standards the band performs. Shoesmith’s bass intertwines with the latino rhythms of the Columbian congero player Oslu Casteñeda creating a rhythmical lyrical foundation. Rhythm is king in the Shoesmith Nu-Jazz Ensemble and drummer Ben Stacey locks it all in with his rocksteady swing and back beat. Jacob Mitchell has an intuitive harmonic approach and blues tinged style and recent WAAPA graduate Marc Osbourne approaches the melodies with a fresh zeal and bright brillance when he solos. Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 9.30pm Cartel

Cartel began as a collaboration between bassist Ash Sinclair and keyboardist Chris Travaglini. They both wanted a band that could pay homage to the great 70's, 80's and 90's soul, R&B and pop tracks in all of their synthesized goodness. They were incredibly fortunate to acquire some of Perth's most experienced and talented young musicians and singers who shared the same vision. A few days later, rehearsals were scheduled, and Cartel was born. Their debut gig will feature classics from the 70's, 80's and 90's legends such as Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Prince and many more. Rachel Claudio headlines this week at The Ellington


The wonderful Ms Claudio is back in Perth for two exclusive shows at The Ellington this weekend. It is also a pleasure to present the sublime Grace Woodroofe for two more shows on Tuesday and Wednesday and we are also proud to present fantastic artist Phil Doncon who will be painting live to music from the Carl Mackey Quintet on Thursday. Then rounding out the weekend will be talented WAAPA contemporary music student Sean Wong with his Debut EP launch.

TUESDAY 8.00pm Grace Woodroofe

With her uniquely warm, husky, and sometimes mournful voice, Grace Woodroofe is about to make a special mark on the music scene. I was greatly inspired by blues singers, and developed my own blues indie sound,” she says. At the age of sixteen, Grace’s demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper by none other than the late Heath Ledger. In the words of Mr. Ben Harper himself, ‘You are not going to believe this girl. Ben McDonald (bass), Sam Maher (drums), Jake Webb (guitar) and Graham Wood (piano). Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 8.00pm Carl Mackey Quintet - Jazz and Art

Carl Mackey returns to the Ellington stage, bringing with him a stellar assembly of talent. You can expect a night of high energy music, with a repertoire drawn from the song books of various artists, including John Scofield, and a few new originals thrown in the mix. With this line up, this is one not to be missed! Carl Mackey - Tenor/Alto, Freddie Grigson - Guitar, Graham Wood - Piano, Pete Jeavons - Bass and Chris Tarr - Drums. Phil Doncon - Visual artist and performance painter. Phil Doncon is an artist and a performer who is both energetic and inspiring. His unique ‘live’ painting performances are vigorous and dynamic, as well as being highly skilled. He creates rapid fire images in direct response to the journey of live music. He has has performed live painting in collaborative performances with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (2006, 2007 & 2012), the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (2008 & 2012) and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (2010) on the ‘Play Me a Picture’ series. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 8.00pm Shameem

Some performers need the audience to listen long and carefully before anyone gets that there is something good going on. With Shameem you’d have to be locked in a lead-lined room to miss this lady’s sparkle. Her charisma and sheer energy on stage command attention and the listener is rewarded with a swinging, soulful sound – this is what jazz is all about.” – James Morrison, Australian jazz virtuoso. Shameem’s album, already proven popular with community radio stations around Australia, is now taking off on USA college radio. Her track “Boy” has also made it to the finals of the Australian Songwriting Contest. In the coming months she will also be releasing a track in collaboration with ARIA-charting house producer DJ Nick Galea. Driven by a relentless passion for words, Rachel Claudio's lyrics have a knack of hitting truth right between the eyes. Her song-writing rocks a delicate balance of pop & soul. Her multi-textured voice flips and turns in a stunning blend of power & sweetness. Native to Perth, Western Australia, singer/composer/producer Rachel Claudio arrived in France in 2006, Claudio had already began forging a name in electronic music, creating the label Jaffa Music with DJ Nicolas Vautier. It began a period of soulful house marked by collaborations with artists like Martin Solveig, Jamie Lewis, Dimitri from Paris, among many others. Her distinct vocal sound, production skills & lyrics saw her become one of the definitive vocalists of the soulful house community. She delivered her particular brand of soul in the debut album, Claudiography (to mean, "the writing of Claudio") [Kromatik, France (2011)] Claudio's live performances never leave an audience ambivalent. Her vocal agility, her percussive flow and her implacable conviction have seen her in concert all over the globe, from Sao Paolo to Philadelphia, New York to Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong to Melbourne, Amsterdam, Moscow... SATURDAY 8.00pm Juliana Areias - A Night in Brazil

Prepare yourself for a musical adventure exploring the forest of rhythms and the 7 seas of melodies from Brazil. A stunning selection of traditional and contemporary Brazilian music favorites, fusions and originals performed by an amazingly groovy line up of talents, featuring one of the last opportunities to enjoy the prodigious Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Leandro Cezarino (guitar, cavaquinho and percussion) on Australian stage, prior his depart for Brazil, along with Marcio Mendes (percussion, guitar, cavaquinho, sax, accordion and back vocals), Adam Springhetti (bass), Bronton Ainworths (drums) and surprising special guests. SUNDAY 6.00pm Sean Wong Debut EP Launch

Join Sean Wong and an incredible band as he officially launches his debut EP at the Ellington. Sean has recently graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and has been hard at work writing and recording his first self titled EP. This bilingual EP, consisting of four English tracks and two Mandarin tracks, is a reflection of his experiences and observations of love and life, translated into catchy/melodic tunes of the pop/neo-soul genre. Singer/songwriter Astrid Ripepi will start the evening off, while Ethan Darnell, Matthew Schmalkuche, Josh Dyson and Joe Southwell will be joining Sean on stage for his final performance in Perth before departing for Taipei, Taiwan to explore music and culture of the East. Sean will be performing his original music from his EP and tunes from artists who has influenced his music. So bring along your friends as this is a night not to be missed. Click here for tickets

This week at The Ellington


It's the first week back at work for most so why not help that week slide by with some fantastic music at The Ellington. We are blessed with an amazing week of music with shows of note from Vanderwal, Winton, Hooper & Cohen Band (Tuesday), touring artists from Sydney Carl Morgan (CD Launch Wednesday) and Matilda Abraham (Saturday). WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Carl Morgan CD Launch (Sydney)

Guitarist and composer Carl Morgan studied at the Australian National University before relocating to Sydney in 2009. He has since established himself as one of Sydney's top jazz guitarists, performing with many international musicians including Chris Potter, Alex Sipiagin, the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra and James Muller. Carl established his own group in 2010, the Carl Morgan Band, which he has toured nationally and recorded and album 'Stone' of his original music. Trent White returns to the Ellington stage, set to present a suave and sophisticated mix of slick songbook gems. A quirky young singer whose approach to music is steeped firmly in performing popular jazz standards we all know and love in a style that brings tradition together with a youthful twist - and always a few good laughs and stories along the way. Joined by a top-notch band of young jazzmen in the engine room (rhythm section) tonight, the band create a perfect backdrop to help Trent bring these songs to life. Expect a taste for all ears; music from the Gershwin's, Irving Berlin, and Antonio Carlos Jobim to songs you would have heard famously performed throughout the years, from Sedaka to Sinatra. Many local and International audiences have experienced the unique jazz style and awesome sound of Perth Jazz Singer Marnie Kent. Her mix of jazz originals and standards with a funky edge and her love of latin grooves make for an eclectic cross section of styles. With her roots firmly in Jazz, it is easy to recognize her love of pop, blues, r’n'b and latin rhythms. SATURDAY 8.00pm Matilda Abraham (Sydney) 

Matilda’s singing brings a bright and vibrant sound to a diverse repertoire made up of jazz standards and originals. Matilda’s approach is honest and richly musical. Paying much attention to detail she emphasises the crafting and development of each song. Matilda will be performing with a mixture of fellow Sydney musicians and Perth locals. Joining her from Sydney is guitarist Carl Morgan who is a member of the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra and has performed with such notable musicians as Chris Potter, Katie Noonan and Kristin Berardi. Bassist Alex Boneham performs with the James Muller trio, and has also performed with well known musicians George Garzone and Mike Nock. Matilda is excited to welcome Tom O’halloran and Ben Vanderwal as featured artists on this occasion. Chelsea Cullen is one of the most exciting and talented singer song writer to emerge from the Perth music scene in recent years. Her music is written from the heart with inspiring lyric's and melody's, cleverly interpreting issues & emotions in modern life. Dd Soul are a newly formed session band from Perth consisting of Daine Spowart (Drums), Dario Jiritano [Big D] (Bass), Pete Flude (Guitar and Vocals), Norberto Flamenco [Norb] (Keys/Piano), they are all working musicians with different musical backgrounds. SUNDAY 6.00pm Marcio and Ben's Duo Sau Paulo

Marcio and Ben's Duo Sau Paulo is a new band featuring Multi instrumentalist/singer Marcio Mendes and drummer/percussionist Ben Vanderwal. These guys play samba, the rhythms of North East Brazil and everything in between. Blending electronic sounds with acoustic vibrancy, these two have a natural chemistry that is infectious. Duo Sau Paulo is a great way end your weekend. Marcio Mendes - Marcio hails from Sau Paulo, Brazil's largest city. He has  played  music professionally since his early 20’s and has performed with highly respected names of the Brazilian music scene such as Djavan and also famous samba and pagode bands from Brazil such as Mundo do Samba, Arte Popular and Negritude Junior. He has entertained crowds as large as 100 thousand people in Brazil, Europe and Australia with artists such as Leandro Learte and the pianist Tania Maria. Click here for tickets
