John Bannister and The Charisma Brothers Official CD launch is on Wednesday and Nicola Milan's very special Fringe World show on Thursday. Then into the weekend with a farewell show for FLD before she takes a break on maternity duties, followed by a fantastic new show from Joe Southwell and Samie Nafie - earth-shaking, soul-infused R&B. Saturday will feature the 40th birthday celebrations of Simon Jeans and Howie Morgan, followed by old school funk from BUMP and a big double Sunday to round out the weekend.

TUESDAY 8.00pm Spence - MacDonald duo and Gilded

Alister Spence (Australia) piano, Raymond MacDonald (Scotland) alto/soprano sax. This duo dives joyfully headlong into open improvisation and realtime composition. Theirs is a musical universe where beauty and tension, simplicity and density happily co-exist. Spence and MacDonald have developed a friendship and mutual admiration over the last 10 years, collaborating on projects including the Raymond MacDonald International Big Band, Tokyo 2008, featuring Satoko Fujii, Jim O’Rourke, Michiyo Yagi (‘an unqualified success’ The WIRE U.K.), and Alister Spence Quartet (Europe tours 2009, 2011). ‘Inspired Music Making’  4 stars Jazzwise (UK). ‘Wildly restless…a euphoric ridge of high pressure’ Bad Alchemy (Germany). Gilded is a new, beguiling and often beautiful musical project exploring texture and dislocated melody. Matt Rösner based in Myalup is arguably one of Western Australia’s most renowned experimental musicians. He has released music on labels as diverse as Room40, 12K, Apestaartje, Meupe and Miatera. Click here for tickets

Chris Foster (piano), Nick Abbey (double bass) and Michael Perkins (drums) are standout artists on the Perth jazz scene with extraordinary facility and sincerity. In collaboration, the quartet bring you jazz with some indie grit – a beguiling blend of their interpretations of some favourite jazz standards alongside original arrangements of songs ranging from post punk to pop via trip hop. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 11.30pm Bass In Yo Face All Over the Place with Joe Southwell and Sam Nafie

Joe and Sam team up to bring you a night of earth-shaking, soul-infused R&B! Sam’s raw and organic tone has made him one of Perth’s most versatile vocalists while Joe has been energetically pushing the low-end frequencies in many bands around town. Armed with a phenomenal band, these two are pumped to bring some of their favourite tunes to the Ellington stage. The repertoire will explore a range of sub-genres, showcasing tunes from various artists including Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, the Roots, Jamiroquai and Stevie Wonder. From 70s-flavoured funk to neo-soul to ground-thumping beats – and anything and everything in between! Sam Nafie (vox), Harry Winton (guitar), Lewis Moody (keys), Bronton Ainsworth (drums), Joe Southwell (bass/synth + rhymes) and special guest: Carl Mackey (sax). Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 8.00pm Howie Morgan and Simon Jeans

Old Man Blues Guitar Band: set Feb 2, 1973. Howie Morgan & Simon Jeans join forces to put on a sizzling showcase of sweet soulful singing and guitar slinging. The two Perth guitarists, singers &/or trombone owners were both born on this very same day some 40 years ago (technically Howie is the eldest being born in NZ, go easy on the old guy), so expect to hear and see a bit of a musical party onstage. They will be turning off their hearing aids and turning the amps up to 11 to serve some wailing doses of stinging electric voodoo, acoustic guitar, lap steel… you name it. Howie promises to play a slide guitar solo behind his back with his false teeth at the same time, and Simon is even going to sing a couple of tunes if he can stand back up on his walking frame after fiddling with his effects pedals. Joining these cranky old blues dogs will be the ever youthful team of Matt Branton on bass, Chris Tarr on drums & Graham Wood on keys as well as a few special guests TBA. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series featuring B U M P

Your Saturday late night is in safe hands this week with another dance party driven by the express train of groove BUMP. Come and join Hans, Adam, Trevor, Roy, Hussy, Ricki and Dan as they power through a late night session of feel-good discotized and funkified hits. Warning: you won’t hear any Neo-Soul at this gig - it’s old-school all the way. Click here for tickets

This promises to be a unique night of music highly anticipated by all members of the quartet. ‘Tal is a very talented and disciplined piano improviser. He is a special talent that needs to be heard... check him out’  George Garzone. ‘Incendiary, fervent and ebullient’  Mark Fitzgibbon. …’he is well on his way to making an esteemed contribution to Australian and international contemporary jazz piano’  Sean Wayland Click here for tickets
