Tim Hart (Boy and Bear) headline this week at The Ellington


A great week of music including new shows from Sarah Ramsey (Wednesday), Runner (Thursday) Tim Hart (Boy and Bear - Friday) and The Gavin Kerr Quartet featuring Mel Crothers (Sunday). A not to be missed, power packed Chamber Jam this evening and a wide range of musical styles throughout the week. 

MONDAY 7.00pm Chamber Jam

Chamber Jam at The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other.  Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues.  Sartory String Quartet - Featuring compositions by Kathy Corecig including Passacaglia for strings and two harps, a companion piece for Kirsten Lepore's (US) acclaimed stop-motion film 'Bottle' and more. Krzysztof Piotrowicz - a selection of Russian and Russian Romani guitar pieces including romances and dances. Pro Arte Collective - exploring music for wind instruments from many genres including contemporary, jazz and world music in addition to the stellar pieces of repertoire for wind quintet. Click here for tickets

TUESDAY 8.00pm The Groovesmiths Nu-Jazz Ensemble

An organic, sexy smooth sound that is an amalgamation of the musical styles of jazz, Latin jazz and contemporary Australian roots music. The band performs originals written by bassist Gavin Shoesmith (ex John Butler Trio, Katamaran) and a fine selection of jazz standards with a definitive Nu-jazz twist. Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Sarah Ramsey Quintet

Endowed with a warm and soulful vocal tone, Sarah Ramsey produces a unique and exciting approach to jazz standards. Currently studying at WAAPA, Sarah is influenced by many jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae. Join Sarah and her quintet for an exciting night of tunes by composers varying from Duke Ellington to Pat Metheny. THURSDAY 8.00pm Runner

The challenges of playing an entirely acoustic show in a musical world usually filled with layers of guitar effects proved an enticing prospect for rising local outfit Runner. The band pulled key elements from their songs and attached them to foundations of strings and voice to produce a rich set to draw last month's HUSH show to a close in the packed Chapel of St Mary and St George. FRIDAY 6.00pm The Graham Wood Trio 

Graham Wood is co-owner of The Ellington Jazz Club as well as director of music at The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He is also one of Perth's most in demand and well known Jazz pianists. Graham has performed with an incredible array of famous Jazz artists such as Frank Foster, Sam Rivers, Ernie Watts, Sheila Jordan, Cindy Blackman, Dave Weckl, Claire Martin, Reggie Workman, Ingred Jensen, Mark Murphy, Greg Osby, Bob Sheppard, Carmen Lundy, George Garzone, Katie Noonan and Gretchen Parlarto. FRIDAY 8.00pm Tim Hart (Boy and Bear) 

Whilst traveling the world with his band Boy & Bear, Sydney singer-songwriter Tim Hart has managed to write an album’s worth of solo material that champions his skills as a lyricist and musician. See for yourself why Tim was chosen to tour as part of Laura Marling’s band last year, and asked to support Communion artists Michael Kiwanuka + Ben Howard at their upcoming Splendour sideshows. After introducing audiences to his tales on an East Coast tour earlier this year, Tim is now ready to hit the road nationally for the first time, with his debut album “Milling The Wind” in tow. Click here for tickets

Now from the grunts and screams of ole Papa James to the sophisticated textures and colours of Donny and Stevie, Sam Nafie has got it down in the realms of funk, blues, and all things soul! SATURDAY 6.00pm Fiona Lawe Davies 3

This trio delivers jazz with some indie grit – a beguiling blend of their interpretations of some favourite jazz standards alongside original arrangements of songs ranging from post punk to pop via trip hop. SATURDAY 8.00pm Victoria Newton Quintet

Victoria Newton relocated to Perth in 2008 after many years in the UK, where she was recognised as one of the most exciting and dynamic jazz vocalists on the scene. In recent times she performed at the famous Ronnie Scott’s in London, Alexis in Kuala Lumpur, for their International Jazz Series, and a dream gig performing Brazilian songs cruising up the Amazon! She has appeared at many festivals and venues throughout the UK and Europe including Queille in France, The Ingolstadt Jazz Festival in Germany, The Oxford Literary Festival, Marlborough and Swanage Jazz Festivals in the UK, Pizza Express, the 606 Club and The Jazz Café in London where she supported Terence Blanchard and performed with Ronny Jordan. Click here for tickets

Back by popular demand at the Ellington Late Night Grooves Session are the Imagin8's. Featuring the distinctly soulful vocals Jade Crompton - the youngest daughter of Stax recording artist CL Blast, has inherited her funk soul and power from her famed father, but developed her talent and style further by her love and interest of many genre's of music. The Imagin8's shows are known for, great music, a selections form a collection of genre's and most importantly entertainment with a capital E! You can always expect a surprise. With a career that spanned decades and generations, Ol' Blue Eyes recorded and performed some of the most loved "popular" tunes ever written. The Gavin Kerr Quartet will revive these amazing songs adding their own twist and will feature the beautiful Miss Mel Crothers on vocals. This week at The Ellington


If you missed the incredible performances by George Garzone this weekend then good news - we have an encore performance scheduled for Thursday due to a last minute cancellation. Other shows of note include the enigmatic Adam Page who will return for a special performance Tuesday, Jamie Oehlers CD launch on Wednesday, the sublime Hetty Kate from Melbourne on Saturday night and The Ellington debut for wonderful indigenous singer Gina Williams on Sunday. MONDAY 20th August 7.00pm Song Lounge

Presented by North Street Music, Song Lounge features a selection of Australia's leading singer-songwriters together for an evening of wine, tapas and storytelling. Featuring Vive Oldham - Inspired by fiercely creative and intelligent women like St Vincent, Bat For Lashes and Florence Welsh. Daisy Clover - 60s folk inspired pop sounds mixed with her sweet vocal melodies and empowering driving guitar riffs and emotive build-ups. TUESDAY 8.00pm Adam Page (NZ)

"It is a rare treat to see a musician with such a masterful grasp of his craft performing with such effortless charisma, humour, and inventiveness. I was blown away." – Tim Minchin. Adam Page returns to the Ellington with his high energy and hilarious solo looping show. Adam’s primary instrument is the saxophone but his show includes an astonishing variety of eclectic instruments including ukeles, keyboards and flutes as well as beatboxing and Tuvan throat singing! All of Adam’s compositions are improvised and utilise his outstanding skills with his looping pedals…he has also been known on occasion to play his majestic, wizardly Beard. WEDNESDAY 8.00m Jamie Oehlers CD Launch

The Jamie Oehlers Quartet is touring Australia promoting Jamie's latest release, "Smoke and Mirrors" which features the extraordinary talents of US drummer Ari Hoenig. Ari won't be touring with him this time, but Jamie has assembled what he describes as the "best young jazz talent Australia has to offer" to join him in Tal Cohen on piano, Karl Florrison on bass and Jacob Evans on drums. Click here for tickets

Saxophonist George Garzone is a legendary tenorman who has appeared on over 20 recordings as a leader. He is without doubt one of the leading Jazz performers in the world and has lead the iconic Boston band "The Fringe" for 40 years. Born in England, and raised in Melbourne, Hetty Kate has been on the scene for only a short six years but during that time she's made her presence felt. Having sung in four continents and appeared on no less than eight albums, her pure tone, interesting phrasing and sense of humour has made her a hit with audiences young and old alike. Empire will make a much anticipated return for the Ellington Jazz Club's Late Night Groove session - their last show in the current configuration. “Gina has a beautiful voice but it goes much deeper than this – she connects with a song in a way that takes the listener to a different pace. To hear her sing is an experience you won't forget.” James Morrison, Australian Jazz Legend. For more than two decades, multi-award winning singer-songwriter Gina has been dedicated to the telling of her people’s stories. For almost 15 years Gina was a journalist, specialising in the reporting of Indigenous affairs. And then she started to sing. Gina first came to prominence in 2001 when she won the West Australian Song Contest in the Indigenous category. She's won many awards since then, including Most Popular Indigenous Performer at the West Australian Music Industry Awards. In recent times Gina has performed with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra, Black Swan State Theatre Company and the Perth International Arts Festival. Click here for tickets

George Garzone (USA) headlines this week at The Ellington


THE man of the tenor saxophone - George Garzone - is back in town for two exclusive show on Saturday and Sunday. George is without doubt one of the worlds leading jazz musicians and not to be missed. Other great shows of note include Rick Webster's CD launch (Wednesday), Mike Pigneguy Awakenings Ensemble (Thursday) and a double dose of Deuces with Cristal Phillips and Solomon Pitt on Friday and Saturday late.

MONDAY 6.30pm JTC Jazz

John XXIII College will present an evening jam-packed with talent, featuring a swing band, a capella singers, junior and senior saxophone quartets, a flute ensemble, a guitar quartet and six excellent soloists. TUESDAY 8.00pm Death and a Cure - Bedouin Sea - Jack and Jill

Hopeful Productions and Gravity Tour would like to invite you to a night of music and community. Performances will be held by local folk artists Death and a cure, Bedouin Sea and Jack and Jill. The purpose of Gravity Tour is simple, and that is to bring people together. We exist to present hope and find help for people struggling with depression, suicide and addiction. We believe that the first step to finding hope in these situations is to come into community and start talking about these issues. Chad Moses from To Write Love On Her Arms (USA) will be sharing his personal story of struggles and redemption throughout the evening. Profits from the evening will go towards expanding this message and reaching youth across Australia to help make mental health resources more accessible and well known. Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Rick Webster EP launch featuring Allira Wilson

Tonight will be the launch of Rick's new EP "The Rick Webster Project" featuring Allira WIlson on vocals. Combining the influences of Robben Ford, Steely dan , Mark Knopfler , Corinne Bailey Rae, John Mayer, Joss Stone and others, Rick has written a unique collection of pop/jazz tunes that is not to be missed. In a variety of groups Rick has been seen supporting artists ranging from Hank Marvin to Daryl Braithwaite , Thirsty Merc , Peter Combe , The Choirboys , Mark Seymore , Ruby Rose and American Jazz guitarist Royce Campbell. THURSDAY 8.00pm Mike Pigneguy Awakenings Ensemble

The Awakenings Ensemble returns to the Ellington this August after a dazzling launch late last year. The show, led by Michael Pignéguy, introduced listeners to an array of fresh new sounds. Since the performance at The Ellington last year, musicians from Tunisia, Syria, the Ukraine, Egypt, The US, England, Lebanon and South Africa have collaborated with Michael during many recording sessions. The combined results are now represented in a new CD entitled SPEAK which will receive its Australian release at the show. Joining Michael on drums will be Tom O’Halloran (keyboards), Simon Jeans (Guitar), Paul Tanner (Vibes and percussion), Iain Robbie (percussion), Peter Jeavons (Basses), Jeremy Greig (trombone) and Carl Mackey (saxes). Click here for tickets

The group draws influence from diverse ends of the musical spectrum. One might not immediately perceive a 33-year old Perth-based Malaysian as being a torchbearer for a brand of music deeply entrenched in African-American history and culture. However, to witness a performance by Trevor Jalla is testimony to the true nature of the blues – a deep expression of yearning and earnest hope, a medium of communication that spans borders and generations, a language that speaks from the heart, to the heart. Having played festival and club dates across Australia, USA, Europe and Asia over the past fifteen years, Jalla is no stranger to the stage. Howard Levy (USA) headlines this week at The Ellington


The legendary Howard Levy returns for a special concert Tuesday and a workshop Wednesday. Also the amazing US trumpeter Bob Garrett will be guesting on Thursday night. Don't miss Briana Cowlishaw (Syndey) on Friday and the return of the young trad jazz torch bearers Beans Buma's Boys of Rhythm.

MONDAY 6.30pm Hale School Jazz - SOLD OUT

The evening will showcase four ensembles from the School: their Middle School Jazz ensemble, the Hale Jazz Combo, the Hale Jazz Orchestra and the Hale Stage Band. Unfortunately all tickets are sold out for this show.

TUESDAY 8.00pm Howard Levy 

Howard Levy is a musician without limits. His musical adventures include journeys into jazz, pop, rock, world music, Latin, classical, folk, blues, country, theater, and film. He has appeared on hundred of cd’s, won a Grammy (1997), won a Joseph Jefferson Award (1986) for Best Original Music for a Play, and has performed many times on American and European television and radio. Universally acknowledged as the world’s most advanced diatonic harmonica player, Howard developed a fully chromatic style on the standard 10 - hole diatonic harmonica, revolutionizing harmonica playing and taking the instrument into totally new territory. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm WAYJO Charles Mingus Tribute

As part of a continuing series of concerts celebrating the jazz greats, WAYJO celebrates 90 years since the birth of Charles Mingus. One of the most important figures in twentieth century music, Charles Mingus was a virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader and composer. Experience some of WA's brightest young jazz talent as WAYJO tackles some of Mingus' hard swingin', soulful and hugely influential tunes in this Tribute Series concert. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 8.00pm Bob Garrett (USA)

Bob Garrett was born in Kansas City, Missouri and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education form Central Methodist University. During this period of schooling he was chosen to perform with the All-American Collegiate Showband at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida.  Upon graduation he enlisted in the US Navy as a musician and moved to Naples, Italy. For the following nine years Bob toured Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Untied States. After his service he relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana where he performed in nearly every genre of music and earned a Master's Degree in Jazz Studies from the University of New Orleans. The past two years have been busy for Jamie. Jamie has toured and recorded with Ari Hoenig, performed in New York and around Australia with George Garzone, performed with Charlie Haden, Eric Harland and Reuben Rogers as part of the Melbourne Jazz Festival, has recorded two new albums of standards with Paul Grabowsky and has maintained his own festival and club appearances around the globe with the Jamie Oehlers Quartet, Lost and Found, the Paul Grabowsky Sextet and Blowfish. Sydney based vocalist Briana Cowlishaw appears to be making leaps and bounds with her mesmerizing voice, incessant creativity and remarkable flair for composition. At just 22 years of age, after a recent 3 month trip to New York in 2010, Briana has just released of her debut album ‘When Fiction Comes to Life’ in Australia, June 2011. The album of original compositions was recorded and co-produced with some of New York’s greatest jazz musicians; Aaron Goldberg (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass), Gregory Hutchinson (drums), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet) and Mike Moreno (guitar). Fiona Lawe Davies with Chris Foster and Nick Abbey. Vocalist and Ellington regular Fiona Lawe Davies is back in August 2012 in her inimitable trio lineup with Chris Foster and Nick Abbey. Those who have already witnessed her superb live performance need no introduction to Fiona’s perfectly crafted stage presence and uniquely pure vocal style. Chris Foster (piano) and Nick Abbey (double bass) are standout artists on the Perth jazz scene with extraordinary facility and sincerity. SATURDAY 8.00pm Ali Bodycoat Quintet

Ali Bodycoat has been performing professionally in the Jazz scene throughout venues in Western Australia since 1995 with her Trio, Quartet and Quintet. Ali has performed at the Perth Jazz Society, Jazz Fremantle, Perth and Fremantle Festivals and worked consistently in Musical Theatre with yellow glass theatre inc since studying at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2002. Recent shows have received critical acclaim including Minor Major Marlene - based on the work of Marlene Dietrich and Franklin - a tribute to Aretha Franklin. Click here for tickets

Empire are a group of five energetic WAAPA performance majors, recognised as the top of their class in each of their chosen disciplines. The five passionate musicians came together after frequently performing as the preferred support for vocalist colleagues in ensembles.
