A great week of music including new shows from Sarah Ramsey (Wednesday), Runner (Thursday) Tim Hart (Boy and Bear - Friday) and The Gavin Kerr Quartet featuring Mel Crothers (Sunday). A not to be missed, power packed Chamber Jam this evening and a wide range of musical styles throughout the week.
MONDAY 7.00pm Chamber Jam
Chamber Jam at The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other. Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues. Sartory String Quartet - Featuring compositions by Kathy Corecig including Passacaglia for strings and two harps, a companion piece for Kirsten Lepore's (US) acclaimed stop-motion film 'Bottle' and more. Krzysztof Piotrowicz - a selection of Russian and Russian Romani guitar pieces including romances and dances. Pro Arte Collective - exploring music for wind instruments from many genres including contemporary, jazz and world music in addition to the stellar pieces of repertoire for wind quintet. TUESDAY 8.00pm The Groovesmiths Nu-Jazz Ensemble
An organic, sexy smooth sound that is an amalgamation of the musical styles of jazz, Latin jazz and contemporary Australian roots music. The band performs originals written by bassist Gavin Shoesmith (ex John Butler Trio, Katamaran) and a fine selection of jazz standards with a definitive Nu-jazz twist. Click here for tickets
WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Sarah Ramsey Quintet
Endowed with a warm and soulful vocal tone, Sarah Ramsey produces a unique and exciting approach to jazz standards. Currently studying at WAAPA, Sarah is influenced by many jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae. Join Sarah and her quintet for an exciting night of tunes by composers varying from Duke Ellington to Pat Metheny. THURSDAY 8.00pm Runner
The challenges of playing an entirely acoustic show in a musical world usually filled with layers of guitar effects proved an enticing prospect for rising local outfit Runner. The band pulled key elements from their songs and attached them to foundations of strings and voice to produce a rich set to draw last month's HUSH show to a close in the packed Chapel of St Mary and St George. Those that missed the event will have another chance to catch Runner in this unusual and insightful form. Click here for tickets
FRIDAY 6.00pm The Graham Wood Trio
Graham Wood is co-owner of The Ellington Jazz Club as well as director of music at The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He is also one of Perth's most in demand and well known Jazz pianists. Graham has performed with an incredible array of famous Jazz artists such as Frank Foster, Sam Rivers, Ernie Watts, Sheila Jordan, Cindy Blackman, Dave Weckl, Claire Martin, Reggie Workman, Ingred Jensen, Mark Murphy, Greg Osby, Bob Sheppard, Carmen Lundy, George Garzone, Katie Noonan and Gretchen Parlarto. FRIDAY 8.00pm Tim Hart (Boy and Bear)
Whilst traveling the world with his band Boy & Bear, Sydney singer-songwriter Tim Hart has managed to write an album’s worth of solo material that champions his skills as a lyricist and musician. See for yourself why Tim was chosen to tour as part of Laura Marling’s band last year, and asked to support Communion artists Michael Kiwanuka + Ben Howard at their upcoming Splendour sideshows. After introducing audiences to his tales on an East Coast tour earlier this year, Tim is now ready to hit the road nationally for the first time, with his debut album “Milling The Wind” in tow. This trio delivers jazz with some indie grit – a beguiling blend of their interpretations of some favourite jazz standards alongside original arrangements of songs ranging from post punk to pop via trip hop. SATURDAY 8.00pm Victoria Newton Quintet
Victoria Newton relocated to Perth in 2008 after many years in the UK, where she was recognised as one of the most exciting and dynamic jazz vocalists on the scene. In recent times she performed at the famous Ronnie Scott’s in London, Alexis in Kuala Lumpur, for their International Jazz Series, and a dream gig performing Brazilian songs cruising up the Amazon! She has appeared at many festivals and venues throughout the UK and Europe including Queille in France, The Ingolstadt Jazz Festival in Germany, The Oxford Literary Festival, Marlborough and Swanage Jazz Festivals in the UK, Pizza Express, the 606 Club and The Jazz CafĂ© in London where she supported Terence Blanchard and performed with Ronny Jordan. Back by popular demand at the Ellington Late Night Grooves Session are the Imagin8's. Featuring the distinctly soulful vocals Jade Crompton - the youngest daughter of Stax recording artist CL Blast, has inherited her funk soul and power from her famed father, but developed her talent and style further by her love and interest of many genre's of music. The Imagin8's shows are known for, great music, a selections form a collection of genre's and most importantly entertainment with a capital E! You can always expect a surprise. With a career that spanned decades and generations, Ol' Blue Eyes recorded and performed some of the most loved "popular" tunes ever written. The Gavin Kerr Quartet will revive these amazing songs adding their own twist and will feature the beautiful Miss Mel Crothers on vocals. Equipped with a powerful voice, Mel is at home singing swinging standards or soulful ballads and has, for a very long time, been a student of Frank Sinatra and the songs he made famous.
