This week at The Ellington


Tonight is the last Chamber Jam for the year but get set as we move into the silly season with 47 shows in December to keep your festive season swinging. New shows this week include our first sing along "All Join In" with June Smith and Stella (10am Wednesday), Marcio and Ben's Duo Sau Paulo (early Saturday) and Sonja D’Anne Vocal Studio’s Presents The Music of the 60’s and 70’s (double show Sunday).  Also catch return appearances from Togo (Tuesday) John Bentley (Wednesday), Manteca (Thursday), Natalie Gillespie (Friday) and Libby Hammer (Saturday). 

MONDAY 7.00PM Chamber Jam

Chamber Jam @ The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other.  Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues. TUESDAY 8.00pm Togo

Togo' are BACK at the Ellington looking forward to a successful repeat of their debut performance in 2011. Taking inspiration from groups like Kneebody, Adam Rogers Trio, Chris Potter and more. This band will bring you complex, emotionally wide-reaching and incredibly funky compositions that will even get your Nan on her feet. WEDNESDAY 10.00am All Join In

Ever longed for the good old days when the whole family gathered around the piano to all join in making music? Couldn’t sing – nobody minded.  Couldn’t play – just grab a Kazoo! We didn’t know it then but have since found out that group singing/playing is not only good fun but it’s also good for health – mental and physical. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm John Bentley Sings songs from the Great American Song Book

Back at the Ellington with his smooth vocal Style John will be crooning some of the great nostalgic ballads from the Big Band Swing Era,with some timeless classics like: Cole Porter's " Begin The Beguine" sammy Fain's "I'll Be seeing You" and George and Ira Gershwin's "i've Got A Crush On You".John will of course include some Michael Buble's inimitable renditions of: "Georgia On my mind"  "Cry Me A River" " Feeling Good" along with other signature jazz standards. THURSDAY 8.00pm Manteca

Manteca, The New Generation lead By MD Kieran Hurley and Simon Styles was born out of 30 years of Uwe Stengel's Manteca Jazz Fusion tradition. The 9 piece Band includes RIC EASTMAN, PAT REALE, ROY MARTINEZ, MARIO ANAMALAY, ANNIE NEIL, KIEREN HURLEY, BENN HODGKIN, MATT RICHARDS AND SIMON STYLES. The music includes Aretha, Horace Silver, Brecker Bros and many others. FRIDAY 8.00pm Natalie Gillespie

Natalie Gillespie is a female singer songwriter whose powerful songs take us on a journey many miles deep. Having recorded and toured nationally and internationally with Yothu Yindi, she is currently working on her second solo album. Natalie is a powerful performer and a passionate storyteller with a universal message of struggle, hope and joy. FRIDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series featuring Kristen Plati

Join Kristen Plati and an incredible band for a night of your favourite funk, soul and Rnb tunes, for her final performance in Perth before moving to New York City. Her powerful, soulful and versatile voice gives new life to the songs you know and love. SATURDAY 6.00pm Marcio and Ben's Duo Sau Paulo

Marcio and Ben's Duo Sau Paulo is a new band featuring Multi instrumentalist/singer Marcio Mendes and drummer/percussionist Ben Vanderwal. These guys play samba, the rhythms of North East Brazil and everything in between. Blending electronic sounds with acoustic vibrancy, these two have a natural chemistry that is infectious. Duo Sau Paulo is a great way to start your Saturday night. Marcio Mendes - Marcio hails from Sau Paulo, Brazil's largest city. He has  played  music professionally since his early 20’s and has performed with highly respected names of the Brazilian music scene such as Djavan and also famous samba and pagode bands from Brazil such as Mundo do Samba, Arte Popular and Negritude Junior. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 8.00pm Libby Hammer Quintet

A favourite among Perth audiences and musicians alike, jazz vocalist Libby Hammer brings an explosion of energy, vocal style and personality to the Ellington stage. SUNDAY 3.00pm Sonja D’Anne Vocal Studio’s Presents The Music of the 60’s and 70’s

The Sonja D’anne Vocal Studio’s have been a part of the Perth music scene since 1996. Alumni from the studio’s are scattered around the world, bringing music to many audiences. The 2012 studio showcase features a Junior show (3pm) and a Senior show (6pm) with special guest performers, Sonja D’anne, Julius Lutero and Dianne Sheehan. A show of singer songwriter/folk favourites from the past, it will be a great summer afternoon/evening of entertainment. MONDAY 3rd December 7.00pm Helen Shanahan

Popular local talent Helen Shanahan has been hard at work writing and recording her debut album ‘Driftwood’ and after launching it at the Fly By Night Musicians Club in October, she is bringing her songs to the Ellington. ‘Driftwood’ comes three years after her first EP ‘Girl in Love’ which established Helen as a serious and soulful WA musician and a firm favourite at numerous venues around Perth including The Ellington and Mojos; and as a strong support act to The Basement Birds, Passenger and Matt Corby. Click here for tickets

An exciting line up of new shows feature this week including Song Lounge (Monday), Lize Heerman (Tuesday), Cliff Lynton (Thursday), Friday night Clave and Jade Crompton's big birthday bash (Saturday). Come on down and join us for another sensational week of live music!!

MONDAY 7.00pm Song Lounge

Presented by North Street Music, Song Lounge features a selection of Australia's leading singer-songwriters together for an evening of wine, tapas and storytelling. Featuring Natasha Shanks - a sweetly personal intimate show of lost love and adventure. Elk Bell - showcasing for the very first time on piano including tracks from her forthcoming album. Nat Ripepi - rich, warm and emotive are a few words to describe the voice of one of Australia’s best kept vocal secret. TUESDAY 8.00pm Lizé Heerman

South African singer/songwriter Lizé is known for her smooth and sultry voice and polished stage performances. With an impressive portfolio of television, radio and music under her belt, this singer/songwriter is a multi-talented artist who has already topped the South African charts. Her first released single went to no 1 for eight weeks and most recent single to no 4. She has performed around South Africa and in Europe and now plans to make Australia her home. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm The Tilman, Ricki and Ben experience

Teaming up tonight will be Tilman Robinson, Ricki Malet and Ben Vanderwal in a powerhouse big band lineup that will knock your socks off. Delivering the music of Thad Jones and Bob Brookmeyer directly to your ear canals via a band of Perth's best established and emerging musicians. Featuring many of the raucous arrangements that made the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra so famous and some of the more left-of-centre compositions that made people leave, this gig will have something for everyone. THURSDAY 8.00pm Cliff Lynton Band Tribute to Larry Carlton and Robben Ford

Featuring Tom O’Halloran on keyboards and a 7-piece band. After many requests from friends and pupils, Cliff has put together a great band performing classic songs from Larry and Robben. The songs have been arranged for this line up so look forward to some fine playing by all of these excellent band members. Cliff has toured extensively throughout Australia, UK and Europe, among many gigs had the privilege of performing at the legendary Ronnie Scotts club in London. During his stay in London in the 70’s he was asked to join Fleetwood Mac but had to decline due to a recording deal at that time. As guitarist for the original fusion band Manteca, recorded live to air 10 TV episodes for ABC inc 2 albums. He won best movie soundtrack at FTI awards for animated movie in 06 and has been a guitar clinician for Fender, Gibson, Paul Reed Smith, Ibanez, Boss and TC Electronics. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 8.00pm Friday night Clave

Get your local Cd shop to prepare a new perspex divider for a new genre combining all the sophistication of Jazz and the infectious rhythms of Latin America right here in Perth. Friday Night Clave features Allira Wilson backed by drummers Ben Vanderwal and James Sandon, Graham Wood on piano and bass legend Paul Pooley. Jazz standards will get a full Latinization and Brazilian, Cuban and Argentine songs will feature in a night of music inspired by the great continent of South America. FRIDAY 11.30pm Soothe featuring Amanda Dee

Leading this successful band, vocalist Amanda Dee is clocking up her 25th year as a professional performer in Perth and has been described as having one of the smoothest, soulful voices you are likely to hear. Amanda’s incredible vocal range coupled with a unique ability to read the crowd makes her one of the most influential female vocalists working in Perth. Her vast career has seen her produce and perform numerous floorshows for nightclubs and special events, including a Dianna Ross show. Perth based ‘Sensational Body & Soul’ singer Masina Miller will be escorting you on a colorful musical journey through the 1971 ‘Tapestry’ Album by the legendary Carole King. Due to the over whelming response to Masina’s  first ‘Tribute to the music of Carole King’s Tapestry Album’ at The Ellington Jazz Club, Masina is delighted to do an 'Encore' performance. Sam Anning, Scottie Miller, Catherine Traicos and Maggie Britton this week at The Ellington


Four fantastic touring acts this week including the one and only Sam Anning (NYC) on Friday night in quintet format. Enigmatic USA Blues pianist/singer Scottie Miller on Wednesday, Catherine Traicos (Sydney) presents “In Another Life” Album Launch Thursday and the early Saturday show features Maggie Britton (Brisbane) "Up Close and Personal". Also a debut shows for trade jazz fans tonight with The Lazy River Jazz Band and a celebration for Marc Rodrigues who has come through his battle with cancer on Sunday.

MONDAY 12th November 7.00pm Lazy River Jazz Band

Formed over 30 years ago and featuring four of the original seven members, Lazy River Jazz Band will give lovers of all things trade jazz exactly what they are looking for. The Band features Lloyd Napier on Cornet;  Lew Smith on Saxophones, Clarinet and Flute;  Bill MacAllister on Trombone;  Barry Bruce on Piano;  John Healy on Double Bass; Barry Cox on Drums and Vin Holmes, Leader on Guitar and Vocals. Click here for tickets

TUESDAY 8.00pm Nick Di Gregorio

Nick Di Gregorio is a guitarist originally from Melbourne who came to Perth to attend WAAPA in 2010. For the last 4 years he has been writing original material and tonight will present a collection of his works. It will be your last chance to catch Nick playing his original material before he relocates back to Melbourne at the end of the year. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Scottie Miller (USA)

Scottie Miller, (also known as Scottie “Bones” Miller) is an American pianist and singer-songwriter born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His musical style is a combination of blues, soul, funk and jazz. “Sounds like Dr. John meets The Band at Bruce Springsteen’s house. Highly recommended.” -Blues Revue Magazine - USA. Scottie is also the touring keyboardist for 2010 Grammy nominee and multi-BMA recipient Ruthie Foster & The Family Band. He appears on her "Live At Antone's"- CD/DVD which won “DVD Of The Year” at the 2012 Blues Music Awards. He has been inducted in to the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame. His most recent releases include: "LIVE"-Scottie Miller Band (2010 CD). “HOME - A House Concert with Scottie Miller" (2011 DVD), and his brand new CD “RISE UP” which he will be releasing in Australia this November. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 8.00pm Catherine Traicos “In Another Life” Album Launch

Sydney singer-songwriter Catherine Traicos is widely recognised in Australia and the US as one of the leading new voices in Americana. Having released two critically lauded albums; “The Amazing” (Album of the month, The Melbourne (Age) Magazine, & Lost Highway, WMBR Boston) and “Gloriosa” (Album of the Week, TOM, "Pick of the Week", AU Review and Country HQ), Catherine heads to the Ellington stage to launch her stunning new solo long-player, “In Another Life”. Catherine will be joined for a special one off performance by acclaimed bass-clarinettist Philip Everall. Traicos and Everall will preview songs from their forthcoming collaboration, “The Unnatural Congress of Still Beating Hearts”, a song-cycle that draws upon the strengths of classical, percussive and popular contemporary music to produce something that is at once unusual, intriguing and incredibly beautiful. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 8.00pm Sam Anning Quintet

Sam Anning is one of Australia’s most prominent Jazz musicians who now resides in New York. After graduating from WAAPA completing a Bachelor of Jazz (Performance), Sam went on to study and perform in New York City, the U.K., and Europe, where he also developed and broadened his compositional and performance style. Sam has performed with a large number of national and international artists including: Charlie Haden, Jim Black, Andy Milne, Bobby Shew, Sheila Jordan, Chris Cheek, Will Vinson, Dale Barlow, George Coleman Jr, Katie Noonan, Darren Sigesmund, James Morrison, George Garzone, Don Burrows, Terrell Stafford, Scott Tinkler, Julien Wilson, Graham Collier, Jamie Oehlers, Barney McAll, Greg Osby, Ingrid Jensen and Carl Orr. SATURDAY 6.00pm Maggie Britton (Brisbane) Up close and personal. 

Maggie Britton “Up Close & Personal” delivers in smooth-jazz style the songs from her current album "Ditto" & other classic jazz standards with stories from a career spanning more than 40 years. From 1967 she appeared regularly on Brian Henderson’s Bandstand, on television and toured extensively around the globe. Britton’s 1981 Royal Command Performance in London ranks as a career highlight and she has had numerous hits, including Come on Down, Morning Dew and the country classic Reuben James. This is Maggie’s first visit to Perth to perform with the Russell Holmes Trio. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 8.00pm Saffron Sharp

Celebrate your weekend at the Ellington! Saffron Sharp will be playing a hot set of intense ballads and roaring swing tunes on the Ellington's intimate stage. Saffron's unique way of connecting with the audience has been reflected on many times by some of the current jazz leaders in the Australian jazz industry. Her warmth in communicating a melody can only come from her experience playing in duo and trio settings for years. Saffron shines as she takes this intimate feeling deep into a song drawing the audience to silence. SATURDAY 11.30pm Dd Soul featuring Chelsea Cullen

Chelsea Cullen is one of the most exciting and talented singer song writer to emerge from the Perth music scene in recent years. Her music is written from the heart with inspiring lyric's and melody's, cleverly interpreting issues & emotions in modern life. Dd Soul are a newly formed session band from Perth consisting of Daine Spowart (Drums), Dario Jiritano [Big D] (Bass), Pete Flude (Guitar and Vocals), Norberto Flamenco [Norb] (Keys/Piano), they are all working musicians with different musical backgrounds. SUNDAY 6.00pm Marc Rodrigues and friends

As some of you may know earlier this year Marc was diagnosed with cancer.  After months of intense treatment he is on the mend and now formally in remission.  He has been blown away by the support that has been shown to him and his family.   To show his appreciation Marc wanted to host a gig to celebrate life.  To join Marc in the celebrations will be some of Perth’s most sought after musicians.  So come on down for a great night of music. Click here for tickets

This week at The Ellington


A great range of music this week including a red hot late show by power house vocalist Jeremy Gregory (Melbourne) who is back at The Ellington for one night only. Also a welcome return for Adrian Kelly who joins forces with his long time musical colleague Jeremy Greig for a special night of music. Plus as always we have another seven wonderful performances for a wide range of musical tastes.

MONDAY November 5th 7.00pm WAAPA Jazz Vocal showcase

Start your week with the lush sounds of WAAPA's talented Jazz vocalists! Join us for an uplifting evening of closely harmonised jazz classics such as 'In a Mellow Tone' (a la New York Voices), along with anthemic Brazilian songs such as Magalena and Sambadouro (Sergio Mendes). A sung recipe of how to make Chili Con Carne will also feature on the musical menu! The WAAPA Jazz Vocal Ensemble directed by Victoria Newton feature 15 voices who have been busy performing in various WAAPA productions throughout the year including a recent sell out performance of Carnivale to Corcovado with the WAAPA Latin Ensemble. Click here for tickets

Adrian Kelly and Jeremy Greig have been performing together for over 20 years.  Now they invite you to join them as they collaborate to present a musical journey down memory lane.  Feel this instinctive musical bond come to life, as they relive some musical highlights and, perhaps, create some new ones. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm TLC Organ Trio

Tom O'Halloran - Organ, Laurence (Freddie) Grigson - Guitar, Chris Tarr - Drums. This band is a fine addition to the scene and The Ellington welcomes their return performance for another fantastic session of blues and soul in the organ trio tradition of Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott, Joey Defrancesco, Larry Golding and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Perth's Blanche DuBois return to The Ellington for a special show with their live band. Blanche DuBois' music is a unique blend of sweet acoustic pop, tinged with a hint of country and a smattering of heart. It's the beauty in the ordinary, the every day. FRIDAY 8.00pm Allira Wilson and Jamie Oehlers Quintet

Allira Wilson is quickly emerging as one of Western Australia’s greatest young talents, whose musical approach has been described as “brave and raw as it is supple and intricate”.  Allira has performed at many venues including the Ellington Jazz Club, with performances under her own name and also with the jazz band Blowfish, with Jamie Oehlers. Winner of the 2003 World Saxophone Competition and 2007 Australian Jazz Artist of the Year, Jamie Oehlers performs in a quartet setting that is in high demand at gigs and festivals around Australia and the world. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series featuring Jeremy Gregory

With powerhouse vocals paired with impeccable stage presence, Jeremy Gregory is a born entertainer and has the ability to captivate audiences from the first note on. Join the R&B sensation as he takes you through a soulful journey of sound that resonates within and keep you grooving through the night! SATURDAY 8.00pm Jodie Tes 

WAMI Award winning songstress Jodie Tes, makes her return to the Perth Jazz scene with an exciting repertoire inspired by Nina Simone, Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald. Since graduating from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2001, Jodie has gone on to record three albums and to tour nationally and internationally. A soulful performer whose music paints a vivid picture, Jodie Tes reignites the tradition of the torch song and injects new energy into the old standards. SATURDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series featuring Odette Mercy and her Soul Atomics

With a succulent sweet soul infused voice, hand in hand with a dynamic and commanding stage presence, Odette Mercy is certainly making her mark as a front woman and female vocalist. She has been lending her vocals to the recorded tracks of local artists such as the Brow Horn Orchestra, The Accumulated Gestures, and as a special guest in live performances with Rezide and STOOPFRESH. They offer a tight rhythm section, sweet ear busting horns and steady guitar grooves, certainly one combination that people often find hard to refuse. However it is also most certainly about the woman, who on behalf of the band, literally extends her hand out in gesture. Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 6.00pm Random Act

Sunday giving you the blues? Get ready to dance the night away to the strains of the intoxicating musical selections of Random Act. Random Act return to The Ellington brighten your Sunday with their eclectic mix of funk, soul, rock and jazz. Once again they are adding a dash of that good ol' Southern style with very special guest Rod Grljusich from Perth's own Urban Cowboy Band...and this time we have an even more special treat in store. For the first time in a jazz club the Urban Cowboy will debut his new country rock single “True Love Survives”, featuring members of Random Act and starring the Urban Cowboy himself. MONDAY 12th November 7.00pm Lazy River Jazz Band

Formed over 30 years ago and featuring four of the original seven members, Lazy River Jazz Band will give lovers of all things trade jazz exactly what they are looking for. The Band features Lloyd Napier on Cornet;  Lew Smith on Saxophones, Clarinet and Flute;  Bill MacAllister on Trombone;  Barry Bruce on Piano;  John Healy on Double Bass; Barry Cox on Drums and Vin Holmes, Leader on Guitar and Vocals. Click here for tickets
