Rachel Claudio headlines this week at The Ellington


The wonderful Ms Claudio is back in Perth for two exclusive shows at The Ellington this weekend. It is also a pleasure to present the sublime Grace Woodroofe for two more shows on Tuesday and Wednesday and we are also proud to present fantastic artist Phil Doncon who will be painting live to music from the Carl Mackey Quintet on Thursday. Then rounding out the weekend will be talented WAAPA contemporary music student Sean Wong with his Debut EP launch.

TUESDAY 8.00pm Grace Woodroofe

With her uniquely warm, husky, and sometimes mournful voice, Grace Woodroofe is about to make a special mark on the music scene. I was greatly inspired by blues singers, and developed my own blues indie sound,” she says. At the age of sixteen, Grace’s demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper by none other than the late Heath Ledger. THURSDAY 8.00pm Carl Mackey Quintet - Jazz and Art

Carl Mackey returns to the Ellington stage, bringing with him a stellar assembly of talent. You can expect a night of high energy music, with a repertoire drawn from the song books of various artists, including John Scofield, and a few new originals thrown in the mix. With this line up, this is one not to be missed! Carl Mackey - Tenor/Alto, Freddie Grigson - Guitar, Graham Wood - Piano, Pete Jeavons - Bass and Chris Tarr - Drums. Phil Doncon - Visual artist and performance painter. Phil Doncon is an artist and a performer who is both energetic and inspiring. His unique ‘live’ painting performances are vigorous and dynamic, as well as being highly skilled. He creates rapid fire images in direct response to the journey of live music. He has has performed live painting in collaborative performances with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (2006, 2007 & 2012), the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (2008 & 2012) and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (2010) on the ‘Play Me a Picture’ series. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 8.00pm Shameem

Some performers need the audience to listen long and carefully before anyone gets that there is something good going on. With Shameem you’d have to be locked in a lead-lined room to miss this lady’s sparkle. Her charisma and sheer energy on stage command attention and the listener is rewarded with a swinging, soulful sound – this is what jazz is all about.” – James Morrison, Australian jazz virtuoso. Shameem’s album, already proven popular with community radio stations around Australia, is now taking off on USA college radio. Her track “Boy” has also made it to the finals of the Australian Songwriting Contest. In the coming months she will also be releasing a track in collaboration with ARIA-charting house producer DJ Nick Galea. Driven by a relentless passion for words, Rachel Claudio's lyrics have a knack of hitting truth right between the eyes. Her song-writing rocks a delicate balance of pop & soul. Her multi-textured voice flips and turns in a stunning blend of power & sweetness. Native to Perth, Western Australia, singer/composer/producer Rachel Claudio arrived in France in 2006, Claudio had already began forging a name in electronic music, creating the label Jaffa Music with DJ Nicolas Vautier. It began a period of soulful house marked by collaborations with artists like Martin Solveig, Jamie Lewis, Dimitri from Paris, among many others. Her distinct vocal sound, production skills & lyrics saw her become one of the definitive vocalists of the soulful house community. She delivered her particular brand of soul in the debut album, Claudiography (to mean, "the writing of Claudio") [Kromatik, France (2011)] Claudio's live performances never leave an audience ambivalent. Her vocal agility, her percussive flow and her implacable conviction have seen her in concert all over the globe, from Sao Paolo to Philadelphia, New York to Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong to Melbourne, Amsterdam, Moscow... She has opened for artists such as Common, The Roots, Raheem DeVaughn, Beady Belle, Ben l'Oncle Soul, Franck McComb.. the list goes on. The concept behind the C.L.AUDIO TAPE is simply to honor some of her favorite new-school beatmakers & some of her favorite old-school songwriters in a most unexpected clash of mash-ups (e.g. Barrington Levy v.s. SATURDAY 8.00pm Juliana Areias - A Night in Brazil

Prepare yourself for a musical adventure exploring the forest of rhythms and the 7 seas of melodies from Brazil. A stunning selection of traditional and contemporary Brazilian music favorites, fusions and originals performed by an amazingly groovy line up of talents, featuring one of the last opportunities to enjoy the prodigious Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Leandro Cezarino (guitar, cavaquinho and percussion) on Australian stage, prior his depart for Brazil, along with Marcio Mendes (percussion, guitar, cavaquinho, sax, accordion and back vocals), Adam Springhetti (bass), Bronton Ainworths (drums) and surprising special guests. Juliana Areias’ career includes a performance at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival. Her authentic Brazilian voice, sense of groove, engaging charisma and a very personal and passionate stage presence are trademarks of her work. SUNDAY 6.00pm Sean Wong Debut EP Launch

Join Sean Wong and an incredible band as he officially launches his debut EP at the Ellington. Sean has recently graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and has been hard at work writing and recording his first self titled EP. This bilingual EP, consisting of four English tracks and two Mandarin tracks, is a reflection of his experiences and observations of love and life, translated into catchy/melodic tunes of the pop/neo-soul genre. Singer/songwriter Astrid Ripepi will start the evening off, while Ethan Darnell, Matthew Schmalkuche, Josh Dyson and Joe Southwell will be joining Sean on stage for his final performance in Perth before departing for Taipei, Taiwan to explore music and culture of the East. Sean will be performing his original music from his EP and tunes from artists who has influenced his music. So bring along your friends as this is a night not to be missed. Click here for tickets
