Grace Knight headlines this week at The Ellington

MONDAY 7.00pm Chamber Jam
Chamber Jam is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other.  Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles featuring Citrine - Lara Vocisano (Vocals) and Rebecca Kossen (Piano). This versatile duo are well versed in Jazz Standards and the works of Music Theatre Greats, including: Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers. Claire Bonner (Guitar) - Talented young Tasmanian guitarist and WAAPA graduate Claire Bonner brings her beloved 1870s guitar and a brand new collection of tunes and tales by guitar greats Mauro Giuliani and Ferdinand Carulli. Philip Everall (Bass Clarinet) -  one of the most versatile bass clarinettists of his generation. Comfortable performing in many genres, Philip has played at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Berlin’s Philharmonie with the Schoenberg Ensemble, Fremantle’s Flag ‘n’ Whistle with his funk band, and pretty much anything in between. TUESDAY 8.00pm Pierre Bensusan (France) Australian Tour
French guitar virtuoso Pierre Bensusan has long been acknowledged as one of the finest guitarists on the planet, a fearless improviser who constantly explores the depth of his own voice in a way that transcends his instrument. After decades at the forefront of innovation on his instrument, Pierre continues to go from strength to strength - with the readers of Guitar Player Magazine USA voting him as "Best World Music Guitarist" in 2008. There is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Memory of Elements
Memory of Elements (MoE) is a new ensemble fashioned from the exciting talents that inhabit the Perth scene. All respected and noted soloists in their own right - they here come together mostly to avoid that. This is a group that moves away from traditional roles of ensembles its size, and chooses instead to focus on exploring ensemble interplay and the intensity of group dynamic. THURSDAY 8.00pm Dana Vulin - Survivor Concert
Several weeks ago, 26 year old Dana Vulin fell victim to a heinous crime in her own home in Rivervale, Perth. An intruder entered her home and doused her in Methylated Spirits then lit her on fire. This premeditated attack has left Dana with 60% burns to her body. To aid the family in Medical, Legal and Future Rehabilitation costs, we are holding a SURVIVOR concert in honour to her strength and all proceeds will go towards the Foundation of Dana Vulin. FRIDAY 8.00pm Grace Knight (Melbourne)
With ARIA nominations and chart topping recordings in each of the past three decades, her career spans over thirty years. An awesome band on the scene featuring the one and only soul master Danny Martin joined by the vocal and bass forces of Simon Fisenden - The dynamite is triggered by the phenomenal talents of Andy Fisenden on the drums while young guns Harry Winton (guitar) and Lewis Moody (keyboards) add to the fire power. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 8.00pm Bronwynn Sprogowski
Bronwynn is an established vocal artist in Perth’s jazz scene known for her smooth, swinging sweet vocal style. Influenced by the sounds of jazz from an early age, Bronwynn is certain to impress with her delightful deliverance of jazz standards. She has performed with an array of internationally recognized artists such as Lionel Hampton, Frank Foster, Don Burrows, James Morrison, Tommy Emmanuel, Daryl Somers, Grace Knight as well as American Jazz vocal legend Mark Murphy. Tonight Bronwynn will be performing with Glyn McDonald (piano) Pete Jeavons (Bass), Mike Perkins (Drums) and Mark Sprogowski (Saxes). Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 11.30pm Stratosfunk
Catch this high-energy nine-piece soul band performing classic hits from the Motown era. Influenced by the 50s, 60s and early 70s soul scenes around the United States, Stratosfunk stay true to the look, feel and sound of the time. The band’s wailing horn section and soulful backing vocals - complete with vintage dance moves - compliment charismatic front-woman Yara Neto’s powerful performance. SUNDAY 6.00pm The Gavin Kerr Quartet featuring Mel Crothers
As a perennial sideman, drummer and arranger Gavin Kerr has worked with many musical groups since graduating from WAAPA with the Bob Wylie Scholarship for the best graduating student.  This April Fool’s Day he gets the opportunity to be bandleader at the Ellington for the very first time. Joining Gavin will be Ookii Effendi on piano, Danny Moss Jnr on bass and Daron Crothers on reeds. The group will feature one of Perth’s most versatile and soulful vocalists, Mel Crothers. Equipped with a powerful voice, Mel is at home singing swinging standards or soulful ballads. After a successful launch of her debut pop album, NEOLIGHT late last year, she will be revisiting her jazz roots, drawing repertoire from jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Anita O’Day. Click here for tickets

MONDAY 2nd April Matt Richards Quartet
Join the Matt Richards quartet as they present a “not so standard” jazz repertoire from past and present. With Matt Richards - tenor saxophone, Glyn Macdonald – piano, Chris Tarr - drums, and Karl Florisson – bass. This expolsive performance will include music by Lee Morgan, Joe Henderson, Percy Mayfield, John Coltrane and Ray Charles plus a handful of original compositions by Matt.
