Hetty Kate (Melbourne) 8.00pm tonight at The Ellington

Jazz vocalist Hetty Kate is coming to Perth for two shows on the weekend of 24th and 25th March. Recently returned from performing overseas in 2011, she is currently based in Melbourne and this will be her first visit to Perth in 17 years.

With her distinctive voice, and pure tone Hetty is often compared to a young Peggy Lee, or Doris Day, and present day chanteuses such as Stacey Kent, Jane Monheit and Silje Nergaard. Hetty’s phrasing and sweet swinging style has enabled her to perform in many countries around the world, including Chile, Vietnam, Switzerland, Hong Kong and North America. Whilst fronting many smaller jazz bands, Hetty is often asked to perform with Big Bands such as The B# Big Band (AU); The Pearly Shells (AU) and The Stray Katz (HK). Also in the last five years she has appeared on seven albums, four of which are with her own bands, and three were released in 2011.

The most recent albums stretch across many retro jazz stylings, and are from her three Melbourne bands “The Irwell Street String Band”, a western all-string foursome; “The Hetty Kate Quintet”, a straight-ahead jazz group playing standards from the mid forties and early fifties and “The Twenty 20s”, a quirky beatnik lounge exotica group. All her bands though quite different in instrumentation, arrangement and sound, are joined by a thread of hip vintage style and interesting song choice and Hetty is looking forward to showcasing her favourites from these albums on her visit to the West Coast.

For her concert at Perth’s premier Jazz Club, The Ellington, Hetty will be joined by Lucky Oceans (pedal steel guitar), Ray Walker (guitar), Karl Florisson (double bass) and Chris Tarr (drums).
