This week at The Ellington


Get set for another fantastic week of music including shows from the enigmatic Eugene Ball (Melb) on Thursday, the debut for the Luke Minness Quintet on Tuesday and we are pleased to introduce the pre-reggae sound of ska, rocksteady, and calypso from The Isolites on Sunday. And to top it all off, Meg Mac and the Squeeze will be reuniting for one special show on Wednesday night with the return of several players from the eastern states. Don't miss a beat!!






MONDAY 7.00pm Cameron Buma

Perth trombonist Cameron Buma makes his triumphant return from a year in Europe with an exciting collection of brand new tunes. Inspired by the music of New York based band Snarky Puppy, Cameron will present a repertoire that defies genres. Cam describes his music in this way: "Imagine if Gospel, Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop, Reggae, Soul and Movie Music were all put into the Large Hadron Collider and smashed together. TUESDAY 7.00pm Luke Minness Quintet 

Experience a body of works composed by Tal Cohen and Luke Minness brought to you by a stella quintet. Featuring Luke Minness - Tenor Saxophone, Ricki Mallet - Trumpet, Tal Cohen - Piano, Nick Abbey - Double Bass, Jacob Evans - Drums. Get down for some great original music! Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 7.00pm Meg Mac and The Squeeze - reunion show

Meg Mac & the Squeeze ARE BACK FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY! This 8 piece band bring you a sensual mix of old school soul and uptown funk. This group features the formidable talent of Sydney based vocalist Megan McInerney and a powerhouse three-piece horn section. THURSDAY 7.00pm Eugene Ball (Melb) and the Jamie Oehlers quartet

As one of Australia’s most active and versatile trumpet players Eugene performs extensively throughout Australia and around the World with groups including the Hoodangers, the Andrea Keller Quartet, the Allan Browne Quintet, the Australian Art Orchestra, the Black Arm Band, the Bennetts Lane Big Band and the Ball/Magnusson/Talia trio. He has performed throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Former Soviet States, Asia, North and South America, India and the Pacific. Freelancing highlights include performances with international artists Jamie Cullum (UK), Satoko Fujii (JPN), Wycliff Gordon (USA) and Jakob Dinesen (DK) and celebrated Australians Paul Grabowsky, Mike Nock, Tony Gould, Graham Lyall, Bernie McGann and Don Burrows.  Eugene has also worked with leading commercial artists including John Butler, Kate Ceberano, David Cambell, Jimmy Barnes, Paul Kelly and Shane Howard.  His performances have opened for legends including Charlie Haden, Branford Marsalis and the Revered Al Green. FRIDAY 7.00pm Jade-Lori Crompton with the Simon Jeans Quartet

Don't miss one of our favourite singers as she returns for the early Jazz show as  she once again makes a splash with the sultry and bluesey tones reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday and Sarah Vaughan. Jade–Lori Crompton, daughter of Stax recording artist C L Blast's (known for his work on songs such as; Buster Brown's "Fannie Mae"; Don Gardner/Dee Dee Ford's "I Need Your Lovin'", Gladys Knight's "You Broke Your Promise" and the (fantastic) "Valerie" by Jackie & The Starlites). Her voice is said to be coloured by heartfelt Gospel tones, syrup smooth R&B, and playful melodies reminiscent of childhood Jazz influences. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 10.30pm Amande Dee - Soul Divas

This Tuesday Amanda Dee will be paying tribute (with another amazing line-up of muso's and vocalists) to the songs and legendary soul divas of our time. From Aretha, Diana, Whitney,  Tina to Chaka, Mariaa, Beyonce and more. It's going to be a fantastic show so don't miss out on this great night of songs that will have you holding your heart or dancing with your hands up in the air. It's an early enough night to make it much better than a night at the movies.. Fun Fun Fun. SATURDAY 7.00pm Ali Bodycoat Quintet

Ali Bodycoat has been performing professionally in the Jazz scene throughout venues in Western Australia since 1995 with her Trio, Quartet and Quintet. Ali has performed at the Perth Jazz Society, Jazz Fremantle, Perth and Fremantle Festivals and worked consistently in Musical Theatre with yellow glass theatre inc since studying at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2002. Ali has held a trio residency with Graham Wood and other venerable Perth Jazz musicians such as Sam Anning, Dane Alderson and Carl Mackey at the Subiaco Hotel for thirteen years, supported Vince Jones, Grace Knight and Marcia Hynes and consistently works with the state’s top Jazz Musicians. Recent shows have received critical acclaim including Minor Major Marlene - based on the work of Marlene Dietrich and Franklin - a tribute to Aretha Franklin. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 10.30pm Late night groove series featuring Astrid Ripepi

Astrid Ripepi will bring it once again to the Ellington stage giving you a twist combination of Old School Soul, R&B & Funk genres. Four of Perths finest musicians will be supporting this soulful singer once again. It's not a night to be missed! SUNDAY 5.30pm The Isolites

Bringing you the 60s sounds of Jamaica and the Caribbean, with smokin' horns and a swingin' rhythm section, the Isolites create the early pre-reggae sound of ska, rocksteady, and calypso. Winning the RTRFM Jamdown Vershun 92.1fm Best Local Rocksteady band & Best Local ska band award for 2012, their live show presents plenty of fresh original songs mixed with the best selection from great Jamaican artists. In an Isolites show you might hear Calypso from a by-gone era alive and kickin', a beloved reggae dance track, a horn saturated ska song, then a sweet rocksteady duet. MONDAY 18th March 7.00pm Song Lounge
