Cynthia Utterbach (USA) headlines this week at The Ellington


Join us for two very special Easter shows with Cynthia Utterbach (USA), Audrey Tang (Singapore) and James Flynn on Thursday and Saturday nights. Catch the return of Matt Richards quartet (tonight) and new music from The Groovesmiths Nu-Jazz Ensemble for a very special Easter Sunday show. It's well worth sticking around for a dose of Poise for the late show on Sunday night.

MONDAY 7.00pm Matt Richards Quartet
Join the Matt Richards quartet as they present a “not so standard” jazz repertoire from past and present. With Matt Richards - tenor saxophone, Glyn Macdonald – piano, Chris Tarr - drums, and Karl Florisson – bass. This expolsive performance will include music by Lee Morgan, Joe Henderson, Percy Mayfield, John Coltrane and Ray Charles plus a handful of original compositions by Matt. TUESDAY 8.00pm Music Rocks the Ellington with ‘Back to the 70’s
Music Rocks Australia (MRA) teaches through schools in WA and school kids learn how to play with a very hands on approach. Tonight will see the kids let loose on the prestigious Ellington stage, which will be a gig they will remember for sure.The most talented young Rock musicians in W.A. hit the stage to bring back the music of the 1970’s. A broad selection of songs from Led Zepelin to Ziggy Stardust will be on show with young musicians chosen as ‘Allstars’ aging from 10 to 20 years old from the Music Rocks Australia (MRA) programs. Young bands who in 2011 hit the stage for Australia’s Got Talent and the Bridgetown Blues festival... along with some special invited groups from schools around W.A. Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 8.00pm he Perth Jazz Society presents The Collaboratory with Ray Walker and Tom O'Halloran
Join the PJS on the first Wednesday of each month at The Ellington to see fresh and exciting collaborations between established local musicians. This new PJS series will see established artists exercise their creative muscles, performing music in interesting and unusual combinations. Get ready to see the best in a whole new way.  Ray Walker (guitar) and Tom O’Halloran (piano). The inaugural Perth Jazz Society Collaboratory gig will feature two giants of the WA jazz community - Ray Walker and Tom O'Halloran. Performing a mixture of originals and standards, these two will be performing as a duo for the very first time and will be a performance not to be missed. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 8.00pm Alone Together - James Flynn and Cynthia Utterbach
James Flynn returns to the Ellington for two very special nights with two very special ladies. Top American Jazz vocalist, Cynthia Utterbach and Singapores' number one female drummer, Audrey Tang. Cynthia has a very impressive and extensive resume and it will be a great treat to present this world class singer for the first time at The Ellington. In addition, we are delighted to welcome respected drummer Audrey Tang who has worked across a myriad of musical styles and is in demand both live and as a seission player. These two shows promise to deliver a special chemistry between James and Cynthia and will be powered by a first class rhythm section in Graham Wood (piano), Ray Walker (guitar), and Karl Florrison (bass). Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 11.30pm Empire
Empire will make a much anticipated return the Ellington Jazz Club's Late Night Groove session. The 5 piece will bring you the undeniable Empire sound with happening new arrangements with also some ALL original Empire. Empire's performance brings top quality musicianship to mainstream audiences whilst revamping mainstream music for the more accomplished listener who appreciates talent and skill. Vocalist Ryan Thornicroft's impeccably trained voice and incredible ability to improvise provides an energetic front for the water-tight quintet that is Empire. Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 6.00pm The Groovesmiths Nu-Jazz Ensemble
After a few years hiatus from performing songs from the bands earlier 2 independent releases - Demonstrations of Intent and the self titled Groovesmiths album the band is back with a newfangled sound. With a superabundance of musical tastes and talent amongst its members the Groovesmith Nu-Jazz Ensemble is not restricted by limitations for inspiration. The result an organic, sexy smooth sound that is an amalgamation of the musical styles of jazz, Latin jazz and contemporary Australian roots music. The band performs originals written by bassist Gavin Shoesmith (ex John Butler Trio, Katamaran) and a fine selection of jazz standards with a definitive Nu-jazz twist. Percussion is provided by Columbian Oslu Cateneda and the  drums of Bronton Ainsworth provide a rhythmical feast for the melodic improvisation by Patrick Van-De-Mosel sax and the keys of Jarad Spencer. Their music digs deep into the influences of seminal musicians like Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus. Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 9.30pm Late night groove series featuring Poise
Poise is a vibrant & young duo featuring the talents of Liyana Yusof on lead vocals & Astrid Ripepi on keys & vocals. Having formed this recent musical collaboration, the soulful duo has been wowing audiences at venues around Perth. For this Ellington gig, Poise will bring you the sound of soul, R&B with an emphasis of old school grooves ably backed by a grooving band. This gig will also feature soulful originals written by Liyana Yusof & Astrid Ripepi. For this particular night Poise will be featuring a SPECIAL GUEST -  B-Sho! He Is a new up and coming young rap artist bringing you the flavours of aussie hip hop.
