Trumpet Summit featuring Paddy Fitzallen and Mal Jennings with The South Perth Lions Band 3.00pm today at The Ellington

Paddy Fitzallen and Mal Jennings are two of Australia’s finest traditional/mainstream trumpeters. Paddy made his name in Melbourne in the 1950’s and 60’s as the leader of “Downbeat” and on television in the pioneer days. He was privileged to work with many of the international jazz stars of the day, including Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Torme. He came to Perth 27 years ago after a 15 year stint in Brisbane and a few years in Sydney.

Mal Jennings grew up in Melbourne, Beaufort and Ballarat before moving to Brisbane where he and Paddy became trumpet playing colleagues and friends. Mal is a wonderful player in the tradition of Armstrong, Ruby Braff , Bobby Hacket and the great Australian, Bob Barnard. He has perfomed with many jazz greats including Graeme Bell and Bud Freeman. He came to Perth 3 years ago.

The South Perth Lions Big Band under the direction of Phil Hatton is an enthusiastic group dedicated to music and raising money on behalf of the South Perth Lions Club.
