This week at The Ellington


A great choice of music this week as we return to seven nights featuring 10 shows. Barrel house blues specialist Pugsley Buzzard returns for a Sunday session and new shows including an early Sunday trumpet summit, late night blues show Saturday from Howie Morgan, Marcus Miller tribute on Thursday and Gypsy Jazz on Wednesday.

MONDAY 7.00pm Song Lounge
A selection of Australia's leading singer-songwriters together for an evening of wine, tapas and storytelling. Michael Strong - this WAM Song of the Year award winning artist is currently working on a follow up to 2011's acclaimed solo album A Cold Day or The Street That Sadness Owned. Waiting for Bliss merge pop and folk styles to duo create an alternative sound which has secured them a spots at the Fringe for One Movement Festival, the Fremantle Sailing Championships and residencies around Perth. Waiting for Bliss have finished up in the studio with a fresh debut album 'Lightfields' to be launched in late March 2012. Maul Reid is an acoustic singer songwriter influenced by artists such as Paul Dempsey, Bob Dylan, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Cat Stevens and David Gray to name a few. Toby - raw, energetic and feisty. But for tonight's show you will witness the intimate, emotionally driven side of Toby. Having performed all over the world, supporting huge names like Sheryl Crow and Paul Kelly, Toby always puts on a fresh and energetic performance.

TUESDAY 8.00pm Jazz for justice fundraiser
JUSTICEwa is proud to present you with its first fundraiser of the year to provide assistance to victims of injustice. Come enjoy the jazzy rhythms and voices of Perth-based artists who have volunteered to perform together for this unique occasion to raise funds and awareness. Featuring Nik Roglich, Graham Wood, Simon Blake, Citrine, David Wickham, The Apprentaice & Nathalie Barret - Mas plus special guests. Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Gypsy Jazz with Glenn Rogers and Cathie Travers
Del Fuego is Cathie Travers (piano accordion, loops & vocals) and Glenn Rogers (guitar, guitar synth and baritone classical guitar). Their duo performance at The Ellington will take a journey through their own original compositions as well as vibrant classic Gypsy jazz and tango standards by Astor Piazzolla, Richard Galliano and Bireli Lagrene to name a few. Del Fuego encapsulates an earthy acoustic dynamic improvisatory playfulness that is a delight to the ears. Glenn's tunes cross a variety of styles including European Jazz and Carnatic music; original solo classical guitar compositions as well as some solo jazz ballads. Cathie has a penchant for complex rhythmic structures and ambient textures reminiscent of modern minimalists such as Meredith Monk. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 8.00pm The music of Marcus Miller featuring Michael Matamua
Michael is a seasoned Bass player with roots in Gospel, Funk and Soul. You will be delighted by his tasty Groove and Feel. Tonight is a tribute to one of his great inspirations, jazz composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller. Backed up by the Talented Hans Fiance on 2nd bass, Wayne Antioc (drums) Mario Anamalay (keys), Michael Collinson (sax) and Yolanda Matamua on vocals. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 8.00pm Libby Hammer Quintet
A favourite among Perth audiences and musicians alike, jazz vocalist Libby Hammer brings an explosion of energy, vocal style and personality to the Ellington stage. Along with a top notch quartet, Libby delivers fun yet dramatic interpretations of a repertoire that stretches from classic to quirky. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series featuring Poise
Poise is a vibrant & young duo featuring the talents of Liyana Yusof on lead vocals & Astrid Ripepi on keys & vocals. Having formed this recent musical collaboration, the soulful duo has been wowing audiences at venues around Perth. For this Ellington gig, Poise will bring you the sound of soul, R&B with an emphasis of old school grooves ably backed by a grooving band. This gig will also feature soulful originals written by Liyana Yusof & Astrid Ripepi. For this particular night Poise will be featuring a SPECIAL GUEST -  B-Sho! He Is a new up and coming young rap artist bringing you the flavours of Aussie hip hop. SATURDAY 8.00pm Marnie Kent Quintet
Many local and International audiences have experienced the unique jazz style and awesome sound of Perth Jazz Singer Marnie Kent. Her mix of jazz originals and standards with a funky edge and her love of latin grooves make for an eclectic cross section of styles. With her roots firmly in Jazz, it is easy to recognize her love of pop, blues, r’n'b and latin rhythms. Her sound is warm and rich, her style exciting and dynamic. SATURDAY 11.30pm Deep Blue Soul featuring Howie Morgan
This five-piece band plays blues and soul with songs from the Chess, Stax, Mercury and Motown labels Muddy Waters, BB King, Robert Cray, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, to Robben Ford, Wilson Pickett, Al Green and Bobby Bland and The Meters. Delivered in a soulful package with stax of mouth watering blues. Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 3.00pm Trumpet Summit featuring Paddy Fitzallen and Mal Jennings with The South Perth Lions Band Paddy Fitzallen and Mal Jennings are two of Australia’s finest traditional/mainstream trumpeters. Paddy made his name in Melbourne in the 1950’s and 60’s as the leader of “Downbeat” and on television in the pioneer days. Mal Jennings grew up in Melbourne, Beaufort and Ballarat before moving to Brisbane where he and Paddy became trumpet playing colleagues and friends. The South Perth Lions Big Band under the direction of Phil Hatton is an enthusiastic group dedicated to music and raising money on behalf of the South Perth Lions Club. Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 6.30pm Pugsley Buzzard (Sydney)
Prepare to be booglarized by one of Australia`s finest consummate artists. Pugsley Buzzard has performed all over the world from the smoky jazz cellars of Berlin to downtown New Orleans the womb of the blues. Pugsley has dazzled and delighted audiences far wide with his unique blend of dark hoodoo blues, good time rollicking boogie and blazing stride style piano playing in conjunction with his huge mesmerizing voice that can make the ladies sigh and grown men cry.
