It is not uncommon for Marnie to be singing jazz one night and fronting her own funk soul unit the next week. Marnie will try anything. Lucie Thorne - Bonfires in silver city album launch with Hamish Stuart (Sydney) tonight 8.00pm at The Ellington

Acclaimed Australian songsmith Lucie Thorne brings her sensational duet show –  with drummer Hamish Stuart – to Ellingtons, as part of a national tour to celebrate the release of her stunning new album, Bonfires In Silver City.  Lauded for her unique voice, poetic lyricism, and tender-to-gutsy electric guitar playing, this new album has been receiving extraordinary acclaim across the country, described by many as her best work yet, and sees Thorne further hone her spacious, gritty, “exquisite miniatures of distilled emotion” (The Canberra Times), with that signature warmth and intimacy for which her live shows have become so renowned..

Most of these songs were written whilst on the road, over the past two years of almost constant touring (throughout Australia and Europe) since the release of her last album, Black Across the Field. But the sound of Bonfires In Silver City has grown largely out of the musical empathy and camaraderie Thorne has developed during this period with legendary drummer Hamish Stuart. Produced by Thorne in close collaboration with Stuart, most of the album was tracked live over three days in April 2011, and shining at its centre is their remarkable duet sound. Expansive, playful, loose and real.

Thorne’s last album, Black Across The Field (2009) was awarded Best Roots Album of 2009 by The Sydney Morning Herald, was short listed for the prestigious Australian Music Prize, and earned her a place as one of Australia’s most distinctive contemporary songwriters, and with Bonfires in Silver City she has clearly hit her stride.

“Bonfires In Silver City reveals a subtlety and craft that eclipses Thorne’s prior work.”
(Martin Jones, Rhythms Magazine)
“I’ve been listening to three great female artists in the last month; the first two, Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris require little introduction …the third is a name lesser known, but her album Bonfires in Silver City is undoubtedly the best of all three. Lucie Thorne is one of our own, and with this album she makes a firm statement that she is one of our finest. World-class”
(Chris Peken, Alternative Music Group)
“Mitchell fans will sense a resonance of 1976’s Hejira, for many her masterpiece, in Bonfires In Silver City.... the records are strikingly similar; poetic, introspective works that have a solidity and wholeness.” (Ian Cuthbertson, The Australian)
“Thorne writes some of the most simple and beautiful songs you will hear” (**** The Age)

Matt Richards Quartet plays Cupid 8.00pm tonight at the Ellington

Matt Richards’s former career in competition and commercial diving and the sounds and images from deep ocean experiences have greatly influenced his instrumental compositions. The tenor saxophonist (WAAPA 2000) also draws on the unique sounds of African bell music, ancient African Kalimba music patterns, drumming ensembles; Western harmony and jazz melody.

You can hear Matt Richards perform with his quartet and guest vocalist Marcus Gordon at The Ellington on Tuesday February 14 from 8pm

Of course, it wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without a love song and Matt will play several original instrumentals including Laser Beams For Eyes (rearranged 2010). “This song is about the experience of a love interest catching your eye and drawing you in, as if she has the powers of a super hero. As if, like Superman she has laser beam eyes that catch… and hold your glance until her gaze has burned holes clean through your eyes, skull, brains and right out the other side of your head,” Matt said.
Special guest vocalist and guitarist Marcus Gordon loves the country blues and soul sound and he is all set to help bring cupid’s arrow to the Ellington.

Songs include Jessica (Alman Brothers), She’s a River (Marcus Gordon), Feels Like Rain (John Hiatt), She don't Love me ( she loves my automobile) - a swing arrangement of a ZZ Top Song, Blue Monday (Fatts Waller) and Crazy Love (Van Morrison).

The Matthew Richards Quartet will feature Matt on tenor sax, Glyn McDonald (piano), Ben Falle (Drums), Karl Florisson (Bass) with special guest Marcus Gordan (Guitar and Vocals).

DECADENT SOUL is as the name depicts, full of soulful decadence. Music we all can relate to and sing. Covering genres such as soul, blues, motown, rock and even pop..

Paula Parore (Paula P) ''The Voice of Channel 7 News" got her start on the Perth Music scene three years ago singing back up. She went on to become a grand finalist in Perths first talent showcase "Perth Star" that screened on Foxtel's Aurora Station. Since then she has started two of her own bands "Decadent Soul" which has performed at the prestigious Ellington Jazz Club numerous times, and "BOX PARTY" Her amazing talent and infectious nature makes her a delight to watch on stage.
Paula has just been selected for the 3rd audition round in Sydney for the new Channel 9 TV show The Voice Australia...we support Paula all the way..

David Taogaga (Davo) picked up his first guitar at the tender age of 9. Since then he's gone from strength to strength excelling in genres such as Reggae, Rock, RnB and SOUL. His musicality is likened to the stylings of Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana. He is the man behind our music.
Clayton Petera (C-Lay) moved to Perth Australia in 2010 with an extensive background in acting and musical theatre having made feature films and tv shows in New Zealand. Since landing in Perth Clay's musical prowess has grown immensely and he is able to command the stage with his soulful vocals and his ability to capture the audiences attention with his powerful performance skills.

Terry Vinci is an amazing percussionist. He is the Songwriter/Drummer behind SCIZZORMAN & also drums with a variety of diverse bands around Perth. Terry can basically put a beat to any tune and make it sound out of this world fabulous. Terry currently has an album out available on itunes called AWAKE to dream where Paula P lends her soulful vocals to a few tracks

and last but not least on bass we have the talented Richard Jenkins, with his soul and passion for blues music you will enjoy his showmanship and natural charisma.
