Hank Marvin Quartet kicks off The Ellington Winter Jazz Fest this weekend


Featuring 13 nights of amazing music, The Ellington Winter Jazz Fest will showcase artists such as Barney McAll (NYC), James Sandon (Perth), Bob Hurst (USA), Elle Deslandes (Perth), Josh Kyle (UK), Sean Coffin (Sydney), Samuel Yirga Quartet (Ethiopia), Daniel Susnjar (USA) and Ali Bodycoat (Perth). The legendary UK guitarist Hank Marvin who made is widely recognized as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the world is performing two exclusive shows this Friday and Saturday to kick off The Ellington Winter Jazz Fest. Only a limited number of bar spaces are available on the Saturday night to see this iconic guitarist whose guitar style has influenced Brian May, Pete Townsend, Jeff Beck, Mark Knoffler, Randy Bachman, John Eldridge, and Neil Young. Another must see show on Sunday from the incredible New York pianist Barney McAll.

MONDAY 7.00pm Song Lounge 
Presented by North Street Music, Song Lounge features a selection of Australia's leading singer-songwriters together for an evening of wine, tapas and storytelling. Featuring Ben Zabbia - his soulful songs take you on an honest and rich journey of discovery that touches on themes of self-acceptance, belonging and hope. Trevor Jalla - Blues, gospel, funk, folk and soul - music that speaks from the heart, to the heart. , Matt Allen - new, edgy pop with the emphasis on the vocal delivery and sophisticated arrangements and Shameem - her golden and agile voice injects passion into her performance, and none will walk away without a tune replaying in their head. TUESDAY 8.00pm Bronton Ainsworth Quartet
Bronton’s Fellows - bring your ears on down to the Ellington on this exact evening if you’ve got a hankering to be fed a grooving set of tunes to pick you up at the end of the day. Passionate and playful, Bronton’s Fellows will wash your worries away and fill you with both fresh and familiar jazz fodder to keep you going for the rest of the week - inspired by the lyrical melodies of John Coltrane, the sweet, smooth ballads of Mal Waldron and the spicy Brazilian rhythms of Jobim, Bronton’s band of merry men will present to you a hearty array of selections from the incredible world of jazz. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Chris Foster - Nick Abbey - Ben Falle Trio
Through years of friendship and collaboration this trio have forged a deep musical connection. They have developed an identifiable group sound though a shared love of modern piano trio groups, improvised European music and traditional jazz, creating music that is melodic, rhythmically exciting and sincere. Tonight’s performance will showcase the trio’s most recent compositions, which they plan to record in 2012. THURSDAY 8.00pm Felicity Groom
Felicity is currently on tour of Australia throughout April playing alongside John Butler for his Tin Shed Tales tour taking in over 25 dates and entering house hold name status! This sultry songbird has a talent that’s seen her wing it ‘round the world, first warbling her dark, folk-pop compositions through London, Paris and Berlin, before making her nest in Perth, where she decorates it with shiny things, like her West Australian Music Awards for Best Indie Pop Act (2009 and 2010) and Best Commercial Pop Act (2011). Triple J got wind of Groom’s 2009 debut EP, Treasures, and immediately whacked it on high rotation and made Groom a feature artist, so all could share in the brooding melancholy of magnetic tracks like ‘Criminal’. Up pricked the ears of Tim Rogers, Paul Dempsey, Sally Seltmann, Sarah Blasko and Tame Impala; who have all called on Groom to support their shows. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 6.00pm The Graham Wood Trio
Graham Wood is co-owner of The Ellington Jazz Club as well as director of music at The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He is also one of Perth's most in demand and well known Jazz pianists. Graham has performed with an incredible array of famous Jazz artists such as Frank Foster, Sam Rivers, Ernie Watts, Sheila Jordan, Cindy Blackman, Dave Weckl, Claire Martin, Reggie Workman, Ingred Jensen, Mark Murphy, Greg Osby, Bob Sheppard, Carmen Lundy, George Garzone, Katie Noonan and Gretchen Parlarto. Legendary guitarist Hank Marvin performs two exclusive intimate shows with his Gypsy Jazz Quartet featuring Nunzio Mondia and Gary Taylor. The influence of Hank’s guitar style has been acknowledged by guitarists as diverse as Brian May, Pete Townsend, Jeff Beck, Mark Knoffler, Randy Bachman, John Eldridge, and Neil Young. Hank Marvin with Nunzio Mondia (accordion) and Gary Taylor (rhythm guitar) are now exploring the Gypsy Swing style of Django Reinhardt and Stephene Grappelli and will interpret this popular style on these two exclusive performances with music from their upcoming Limited Edition CD, “GYPSY JIVE”. FRIDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series featuring Melissa Erpen
Back at The Ellington for a much anticipated solo show - Melissa will rock you with her powerful blend of soul, groove and r’n’b. In 2004 Melissa won a WAM (Western Australian Music) award in songwriting which fuelled her passion to create and develop her music further. Melissa was also nominated for a “Young Australian of the year” award for her contribution to the Arts in 2006. Being a regular on the Perth music scene, Melissa has performed in both acoustic and big band acts covering a large range of music styles. Melissa also has an original project entitled "Atira" where she has recorded and played alongside some of Australia's most talented and in demand musicians. This Saturday night at the Ellington come and witness some of Perths' finest musicians coming together to bring you the hottest new ORIGINAL music!! Featuring Graham Wood on Keys, Ben Falle on Drums, Josh Dyson on Guitar, and Ash Sinclair on bass = the lineup alone is enough to give you goosebumps. Mr Solomon "Soul Man" Pitt will be joining in on vocals and bringing some of his own original tunes (DO NOT MISS THIS). SUNDAY 6.00pm Barney McAll (NYC)
anist, keyboardist, composer and arranger, Barney McAll  grew up in Melbourne and received a Bachelor of music from the Victorian College Of The Arts in 1991. From 1989-1997 Barney worked with Australian artists such as Vince Jones, Kate Ceberano and Renee Geyer, touring Australia and Europe. He moved to New York City in 1997 after being invited to join The Gary Bartz quartet and continues to tour internationally with Gary Bartz as well as with  Fred Wesley and The JB's, Josh Roseman,  Groove Collective and recently vocalists Daniel Merriweather and Sia Furler. Barney has performed or toured with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Dewey Redman, Maceo Parker, Doug Devries, Kenny Garrett, Vernel Fornier, Badal Roy, Stefon Harris, Jimmy Cobb, Eddie Henderson, Gary Costello,  Ben Monder, Mark Turner, Peter Apfelbaum, Bernie Worrell, Alan Browne, Billy Harper, Jim Black, Steve Turre and Roy Ayers.
"(McAll's) ability to craft memorable themes is matched by a feel for the  atmospheric... Chamber Jam @ The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other.  Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues.
