This week at The Ellington

Standby for a bumper week of local and touring talent including new shows from Jenny Barnes (Melbourne) on Tuesday, a single launch from Blanche Dubois on Thursday and the debut of Sophie Joy Madison on Sunday. Also a very special performance from Timothy Nelson with string quartet arrangements by Mike Nelson on Friday.

MONDAY 7.00pm WAAPA Jazz vocal showcase
Come and experience an evening of beautiful songs and lush harmonies performed by WAAPA’s talented jazz singers.  2011 has been a busy year for the students who have performed with acclaimed singer Gian Slater, as well as taking a key role in high profile WAAPA events such as Jazz in the Theatre and Radio Active. The 15 piece WAAPA Jazz Vocal Ensemble directed by Victoria Newton, will  perform everything from Louis Prima’s ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’, and Miles Davis’ ‘So What’, to Imogen Heap’s ‘Hide and Seek’. There will also be songs composed or arranged by the students themselves.

TUESDAY 8.00pm Jenny Barnes and Tal Cohen
Jenny Barnes’ debut release Secret Trees is a thrilling and memorable first statement from a truly original talent. The Melbourne vocalist produces a startling take on contemporary jazz that ascends upon a musical road less travelled. It’s a road that by turns feels warmly welcoming then thrillingly new thanks to Barnes’ penchant for experimental vocal techniques. The mood is one of excitement and invention as Barnes creates raw, malleable effects with the voice; improvising, bouncing off her collaborators, shaping disorganised sounds into unexpected musical contexts and textures.
Jenny performs the music from ‘Secret Trees’ arranged for voice and piano featuring Tal Cohen.

WEDNESDAY 8.00pm James, Ben and Dane's Latin bonanza
James Sandon (sax), Ben Vanderwal (drums) and Dane Alderson (bass). Expect the unexpected with this formidable line up of musicians led by the one and only Ben Vanderwal. Tonight features the unrivaled talents of the finest players on their instrument in the country. A Latin bonanza with only three players? - when it is these three musicians it will surely result in a night not to be missed!!

THURSDAY 8.00pm Blanche Dubois 'The War In Me' Single Launch
Taken from their forthcoming album Young Heart (due for release January 2012), The war in me's pop sensibilities mask it's deeper, darker side - the concept of letting go and that moment of clarity that we all have when we commit to moving forward and moving on. In true Blanche DuBois style; you'll be humming the chorus long after the song's finished.
Blanche DuBois' music is a unique blend of sweet acoustic pop, tinged with a hint of country and a smattering of heart. It's the beauty in the ordinary, the every day. Supported by Bianca Jade.
