The Ellington returns to 7 nights a week with the return of the popular Monday night Song Lounge and Chamber Jam shows presented by North Street Music. Also some quality mid week shows to catch from Matt Richards, Glenn Rogers and the new Manteca. Followed by a weekend with regular favourites Natalie Gillespie, Danny Martin, Penny King and Empire. Rounding out the weekend is the fantastic trad revival band Beans Buma's Boys of Rhythm and you're set with another week of top shelf entertainment at The Ellington.
MONDAY 7.00pm Song Lounge
Song Lounge, North Street Music’s flagship singer/songwriter showcase is back for 2013 with a bang! We start the year with an incredible line-up with familiar faces and a new one! Ricky Green was heard busking on the street in Freo by NSM Director, Bourby Webster, and got snapped up to showcase his talent at Song Lounge for the first year. David Lazarus, the young prodigy is back, and with the wonderful Minky G and Helen Shanahan (the latter fresh from winning a WAM song of the year award at the end of 2012) the show promises to be the best of what Song Lounge can offer. TUESDAY 8.00pm Matt Richards Creatures Of The Deep
Plunge into the abyss with Matt Richards as he presents a totally new repertoire of music inspired by his many adventures from under the deep blue sea. Collaborating with Ben Matthews (Piano), Bronton Ainsworth (Drums), Phil Waldron (Bass), and Steve Richter (Didgeridoo and Percussion), Matt will take you on a wild and innovative exploration of Afro-Jazz inspired composition and exhilarating improvisation. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Glenn Rogers Trio
Glenn Rogers, acoustic guitar, Robin Murray, bass, and Tom O’Halloran, piano present an evening of Glenn’s original compositions. The compositions represent over 10 years of Glenn’s musical journey, including influences of European jazz (the ECM label) and Western and Indian classical music. The music encapsulates a cross pollination of musical styles and cultural influences. It will be an intimate evening of acoustic instrumental music with a few solo instrumental items. Glenn’s music is inspired by both a sensitivity to the natural world, carnatic, jazz and classical music. Click here for tickets
THURSDAY 8.00pm Manteca
Manteca, The New Generation led By MD Kieran Hurley and Simon Styles was born out of 30 years of Uwe Stengel's Manteca Jazz Fusion tradition. The 9 piece Band includes RIC EASTMAN, PAT REALE, ROY MARTINEZ, MARIO ANAMALAY, ANNIE NEIL, KIEREN HURLEY, BENN HODGKIN, MATT RICHARDS AND SIMON STYLES. Natalie Gillespie is a female singer songwriter whose powerful songs take us on a journey many miles deep. Described as a ‘sumptuous storyteller’, you will find Penny on stage with the finest jazz men the country has to offer. Any given show will take you on an eclectic journey, reflecting her wide range of influences, from Billie Holiday to Beady Belle, Duke Ellington to Kurt Elling, Joni Mitchell to Bjork, and all stops in between.
