This week at The Ellington

A Saucy Little Secret continue to scandalise Perth AGAIN!!! with a wonderful show that tells the stories of five female Jazz icons - Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Gladys Bentley, Ethel Waters and Alberta Hunter. Make sure you get down for one of three early shows this week. On top of this treat, we have our monthly Classical music offering tonight with the ever popular Chamber Jam featuring three fine ensembles. Tal Cohen is another Perth musician to make the move to the University of Miami to further his studies, and his farewell gig is on this Wednesday at 8.00pm. Blues/Soul veterans Continental Robert and Tanya-Lee Davies join us Thursday as well as the return of Abbey/Foster/Falle on Saturday. And there is much more fantastic music performed by fantastic musicians so catch a show or two this week at The Ellington.

HMS PopUp Productions’ A Saucy Little Secret, is a masterful piece of cabaret theatre by Melanie Bainbridge, following the lives of five strong women whose music and attitudes influenced the development of modern blues, queer lifestyle and racial tolerance. Famous not only for their music, but also for their progressive and alternative attitudes to sexuality, race issues and relationships, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Gladys Bentley, Ethel Waters and Alberta Hunter, all broke into the music scene through the buffet flats and rent houses of Harlem, but rose to be successful and wealthy recording artists in their own right. Five of Australia’s premier jazz, soul and blues musicians and tremendous actors come together to share their untold stories. Di Shaw, Libby Hammer, Ofa Fotu (aka Odette Mercy), Natalie Gillespie and Harry Deluxe set the stage on fire in this sexy, sassy show. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Tal Cohen Quartet

Don't miss the much anticipated return of Tal and his quartet as they perform a selection of tunes and arrangements, including Cohen’s own promising and innovative original work. Tal’s unique piano style has its roots in Jewish folk songs and classical music, which he played from a young age growing up in Israel. After relocating to Perth at the age of 16, he took up a music scholarship at Churchlands Senior High School and later pursued studies in jazz improvisation at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Many national and international jazz icons recognize his improvisational and technical expertise, including George Garzone, who Cohen performed with in August. Simply put in the words of Garzone, “Tal is a very talented and disciplined piano improviser. He is a special talent that needs to be heard... check him out.” Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 8.00pm It Takes Two - Continental Robert and Tanya-Lee Davies

“CONTINENTAL” ROBERT SUSZ is a national treasure, or he should be. One of the true Soul survivors he’s celebrating 30 plus years of performing Soul, Blues & Down Home Funk around Australia & internationally with his Soul Party. One of Australia’s most soulful singers and legendary harmonica players, his onstage presence is contagious and high energy in the tradition of the old Soul revues in the US around the late 60’s. If you’ve never had the pleasure, now’s your chance! TANYA-LEE DAVIES hails from Perth but jumped a freight train to Melbourne where she immediately formed a combo to satisfy her love affair with the R&B, country/gospel girl singers circa 1950/60. Aaron Malone has been a part of Perth’s music community since 2003 when he began studies in Contemporary Music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). It was here that Aaron began to craft his vocal and performance skills with the dream of making a life out of music. After completing his studies in 2006, Aaron has been involved in various musical endeavours encompassing a range of musical genres and styles, including featuring for the Johannes Leubbers Dectet (jazz) and original funk band The Roast. Aaron has spent many hours investing into his passion and growing in his musical craft and is now beginning a new season as a solo artist. SATURDAY 7.00pm AbbeyFosterFalle Brotherhood Album Launch Encore

Fresh off their sold-out and critically acclaimed performance at the inaugural Perth International Jazz Festival, powerhouse trio ABBEY | FOSTER | FALLE return to the Ellington stage for an encore launch of their debut album: BROTHERHOOD (Newmarket Music). Formed in 2007, this WAMi Award-winning trio is an exciting collaboration between bassist Nick Abbey, pianist Chris Foster, and drummer Ben Falle. Together, they have carved out a reputation for exceptional and engaging live shows, and are well known for their innovative compositions, identifiable group sound, and fresh takes on jazz standards (and a few pop tunes!). The group melds the distinct musical personalities of each of its members into a coherent blend, taking influence from the likes of Avishai Cohen, Brad Mehldau, e.s.t, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Aaron Goldberg, and Perth’s own Johannes Luebbers Dectet. The night will feature many of the tracks from the album, as well as a few brand new compositions and a selection of the trio’s favourite music. SUNDAY 5.30pm Sam Brittain 2013 National Tour

For musically talented Barossa Valley local, Sam Brittain, story-telling is exactly that. Since releasing his debut LP ‘Our Shining Skin’ on June 1, 2012, the path to success for the gifted and independent musician has transformed into a never-ending road. In 2013, Sam is an unstoppable, roots, folk and blues artist, reminiscent of sounds such as Glen Hansard, Damien Rice and Ryan Adams. Sam’s lead single ‘Bruises’ hit #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Roots Chart on New Year’s Eve, 2012/13, where it consolidated its lead for a consecutive four weeks, peaking at #6 in the Overall Top 100. Following a successful and memorable stint supporting breakthrough artist Matt Corby’s Secret Garden tour in December 2011 Sam recently supported UK folk sensation PASSENGER at two SOLD OUT shows at Melbourne’s iconic Athenaeum Theatre. Click here for tickets

MONDAY 5th August 7.00pm George Murphy (USA) and the Gavin Kerr Trio

This August George has been invited to Perth to perform with the WAAPA Big Band, adjudicate for the W.A. School's Jazz Festival and to be an Artist in Residence at Hale School's Music Department. Oh.......and to swing up a storm at the Ellington with the Gavin Kerr Trio! George (vocals and trombone) will be backed by Gavin Kerr on drums, Ookii Effendi on piano and Danny Moss Jnr on Bass. This trio has performed regularly at the Ellington to sold out crowds and always entertains with their brand of swinging jazz. The group will also be joined by some special (secret) guests on the night. If you love the music of Frank Sinatra and the crooners, if you love the silky tones of the trombone (who doesn't?), if you love that broad Bostonian accent then you should leave your slippers in the cupboard, grab your "going out shoes" and get down to the Ellington for a night of swinging standards. Click here for tickets

This week at The Ellington


Head on down to Perth's favourite live music for another fantastic week of music. Kicking off this evening with Song Lounge featuring some wonderful loczl talent. Tuesday we welcome back Chris Greive from Scotland for a special one off show. Wednesday sees the fabulous WAAPA Music theatre students and Thursday we welcome back Prita for a great show following her relocation to Berlin. The weekend features a great new show from James Flynn and Chelsea Gibson entitled "Gotta be Gatsby". The name says it all so head down for all things 1920's this weekend. Another very special feature is the start of the run of shows on Sunday from "A Saucy Little Secret Set to Scandalise Perth AGAIN".

TUESDAY 7.00pm Chris Greive (UK) Quintet

Since moving to Edinburgh in 2000, trombonist Chris Greive has worked extensively throughout the UK & Europe as professional musician, educator & soloist. Having been the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra lead trombonist for over 10yrs Chris has graced the stage with legends such as; John Scofield, Dave Liebman, Kurt Elling (also as arranger) & Randy Brecker among many others. Greives abilities across a number of styles have ensured a varied & exciting output. His time in Perth during 2013 will see collaborations with the best of Perth's globetrotting musicians who are old friends & constant inspirations – Jamie Oehlers on saxophones, Tal Cohen on piano, Peter Jeavons on bass and Ben Vanderwal on drums. Click here for tickets

As the Gatsby phenomenon takes grip with the success of Leos new movie audiences have been re introduced to the fabulous music  of the 'Roaring twenties' with jazz giants such as Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway & Louis Prima. Join James & Chelsea for a fun 'Speakeasy' style event celebrating this era for an evening jam packed with wonderful music, laughter and great entertainment. Featuring: 'Minnie the moocher', 'Now you has jazz', 'just a gigolo', 'Ain't misbehavin', 'Makin Whoopee' and many more classics songs and tunes of that period. Mat Jodrell headlines this week at The Ellington

The maestro Mat Jodrell is back this week for a range shows including gigs with Carl Mackey Wednesday, Daniel Susnjar (Thursday) and leading a big band (Friday and Saturday). In addition to this musical treat, we welcome the debut show from Premiss (Tuesday), the return of Katherine Curnow from the UK (Saturday) and an encore performance of Gospel Extravaganza (Sunday). Premiss is a recently formed quintet featuring some of WAAPA's finest recently graduated talent. July 16th promises to be a dynamic and energetic evening of original compositions and contemporary  covers ranging from Gilad Hekselman and Will Vinson to Radiohead and Cat Power. Saxophonist, Carl Mackey returns to The Ellington stage with long time friend and musical cohort Mat Jodrell. Jodrell, a Perth native now taking New York by storm, is a fiery trumpeter of immense talent. The frontmen of Perth’s famed ‘Speedball’, Mackey and Jodrell have a musical synergy built upon years of playing together. Drummer Daniel Susnjar has recently returned from 5 years of study and performance in the United States, where he completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Apart from earning his academic credentials from this prestigious music school, Daniel has relished in opportunities to perform and record with world-class artists including Chick Corea, Bobby McFerrin, Terence Blanchard, Danilo Perez and Dave Douglas, to name a few. FRIDAY 7.00pm Perth Winter Arts Festival Presents Mat Jodrell (NYC)

One of the outstanding fresh new voices in Jazz today. Originally born in Perth, Western Australia, Mat is now based in New York City where he recently completed his Masters and Artist Diploma degrees at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Mat is featured on numerous recordings, released and toured his debut record ‘Blues In The Night’, and toured extensively throughout the world. Since moving to New York Mat has had the opportunity to perform with Benny Golson, Ron Carter, Branford Marsalis, James Spaulding, Carl Allen, Terence Blanchard, Josh Roseman and many others. Between 2008 and 2012 Mat has performed regularly with the show ‘Hair’ on Broadway and played with Paul Anka with whom he toured throughout Europe, Russia and the Middle East. Click here for tickets

Bassist Joe Southwell has lined up some of Perth’s finest musicians to bring you a mind-blowing evening of urban contemporary gospel music. Fronted by Ayodele (eye-yo-deli) and Sam Nafie on vocals, the band will journey through tunes by artists such as Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond & Israel Houghton, amongst others. This week at The Ellington

Tuesday night you can bid farewell to the Soulman - Solomon Pitt - who has been at the backbone of our late night groove series shows for a couple of years. Great music Wednesday with a double bill from Sydney's Dave Jackson and Lewis Moody's "Career Advice". Then WAYJO return with a fantastic tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. That would be all for the week for most clubs but The Ellington still has 5 more shows to go including gigs from Shameem, Matt Allen, Juliana Areias, Astrid Ripepi and Neda's EP launch on Sunday. 

TUESDAY 7.00pm BLACKwinter’s Night with Solomon Pitt

BLACKwinter’s Night brings you a collection of the best of neosoul and modern soul featuring songs by artists Maxwell, Erykah Badu, Dwele, Jill Scott along with many more favourites. Presented by Solomon Pitt, also doubling as his farewell show, this show will feature live sets by the award winning Skooby and Soul Lounge’s own Dannyboi. Cosmology is the study of the Universe, Ontology is the study of the nature of things, Cosmontology is the study of the nature of the study of the universe and it's also the name of Dave Jackson's debut release under his own name. Acclaimed alto saxophonist Dave Jackson (Sydney) was a finalist in the 2010 National Jazz Saxophone Awards. He's toured extensively with various groups including appearances at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival and around the country as a member of  Trio Apoplectic and the Warwick Alder Quintet in addition to The Denominators and The Dilworths. As part of their 2013 Tribute Series WAYJO will honour some of the finest musicians of the 20th century. FRIDAY 7.00pm Shameem

You may know Shameem’s voice from her track “Turn It On” which has been featured in a major advertising campaign all over Western Australian primetime TV. Born in Australia to a Chinese-Malaysian father and an Iranian mother, this bubbly vocalist and songwriter enchants her audiences with her heartfelt, personal stories and spiritual influences in her songs. Shameem currently has a track nominated for the Independent Music Awards, and is recently returned from touring the USA and Canada where she performed at Canadian Music Festival. Her music often is compared to that of such artists as Alicia Keys and Sade. To see what all the fuss is about, check out Shameem as she presents an evening of her unique concoction of soul, R&B and jazz with her hard-grooving band. FRIDAY 10.30pm The Spread featuring Matt Allen

Matt Allen was one of the first students to graduate from the Bachelor of Contemporary Music at “The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts”. But not only did he graduate with flying colours, he received the award for overall top student of the year in 2010. Matt is a regular performer on the local music scene and has entertained in a number of Perth’s leading bands. from smooth jazz to soulful funk, Matt can do it all. In 2010, Matt released his debut solo album “Over” at the Ellington Jazz Club to a sold out crowd. This album was written, produced, engineered and mixed by Matt proving he is a well rounded and established musician of the highest calibre. As well as being a talented songwriter, Matt is also the managing director of Keogh Music School in Subiaco. It is here that he co-ordinates the schools music program as well as teaching singing and piano. Matt’s vocal charm and charismatic energy makes him a favourite amongst this thriving music industry. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 7.00pm Juliana Areias - Metropolis Show

Juliana Areias – who is an unconditional fan of Jobim and also originally from Sao Paulo – expresses her pride for her home city in this new concert “Metropolis” which celebrates “paulista” artists and musicians and their love for what was known in the words of Eduardo Gudin in the song “Paulista”, “the whole world in one single city.” Juliana Areias, Marcio Mendes, Ben Vanderwall, Adam Springhetti and special guests will present a repertoire featuring songs such as “Sampa”, a northeastern read on Sao Paulo, “Trem das onze”, a light hearted samba classic that reflects the day to day of the outskirts of Sao Paulo in the 60’s, especially the Italian migrants from Barra Funda and Bras; Familia gangster ska (Rap), “Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo” – a Brazilian parody of “New York, New York” from the band Premeditando o breque. “When I think about Sao Paulo, I think about this sarcastic humour which I believe is one of the best humour of Brazil such as Rita Lee,  Titans, Ultraje a rigor, Mamonas Assassinas. Yet again Astrid Ripepi will be hitting the Ellington stage bringing you a combination of her electrifying musical interpretations of some of the greats. Known as a multi-talented pianist/singer/song-writer, Astrid brings a fresh approach to these genres. Tonight Astrid will strictly be on the microphone leading a phenomenal band of Perth's finest musicians including Lewis Moody an incredible pianist/keyboardist who will be in town from Melbourne. Neda has just released her new EP Daylight Disguise, is a lyric taken from ‘The Sound’; its significance struck Neda while she was listening to the mix. ‘I feel there is an underlying lyrical theme on the EP, one where things or people — or just life in general — are not always as they seem. Grace Knight headlines this week at The Ellington

The one and only Grace Knight is performing Friday and Saturday this week, but don't miss three fantasitc shows that are really worth catching Tuesday - Thursday. Vanderwal, Winton, Hooper and Cohen followed by PJS Collaboratory with Cathy Travers Ray Walker and Karl Florrison and then The Alan Corbet Fund and PJS Present Andrew Gioia Quartet. MONDAY 7.00pm Christ Church Jazz

The Christ Church Grammar School Music Department is proud to present the annual CCGS Jazz Night at Ellington Jazz Club, Beaufort St, Northbridge at 7.00pm, Monday July 1st 2013. The concert will feature large ensembles to smaller groups including Jazz Band 1, Jazz Band 2, Saxophone Ensemble and Jazz Combo and special guest singer and instrumentalists from St. Hilda’s College. WEDNESDAY 7.00pm PJS Collaboratory with Cathy Travers Ray Walker and Karl Florrison

A virtuosic pianist and accordionist, Cathie Travers has had a diverse career that has taken her through a multitude of musical styles, from jazz and tango right through to contemporary and avant-garde new music. Joining her on guitar will be Perth's 'gentleman of jazz', Ray Walker. Migrating to Australia in 1960, Ray has been a key figure in the West Australian jazz scene for decades. Completing the trio will be Karl Florrison on bass. Karl has emerged over the past few years as one of Perth's most in demand bassists and is well versed in many kinds of music. The Perth Jazz Society presents a night of original music with the Andrew Gioia Quartet feat. Tom O'Halloran. The quartet, comprised of Gioia, Tom O'Halloran, Karl Florrison and Bronton Ainsworth will be playing all new original compositions by the leader, and experiments with dramatic contrasts in texture and blurring the line between composition and improvisation. Joining the Spread this week will be the hauntingly talented Aaron Malone. Coming to prominence through his work with Perth powerhouse 'Village Kid' Aaron has previously graced the Ellington stage with the full bodied, raucous experience that was 'The Roast' but most recently has been making waves with his Perth based duo 'Whiskey Winter'. With jazz interpretations of Neil Sedaka to pulsating arrangements of Frank Sinatra, complimented by a good dose of humour and story along the way (some at the expense of himself), there is something for everyone.
