This week at The Ellington


Check out Chamber Jam tonight for the farewell of Erin Royer from Just Sax, Tuesday is a nice intimate mid week performance with Libby Hammer and then the same Wednesday with the Ali Bodycoat Trio. WAYJO are back Thursday for their tribute series and then the weekend will deliver as always with shows from The Seals, Jade Webb, Why Georgia and Jade Crompton. The first day of Spring rounds out the weekend with the wonderful singer Amelia Ong. We hope to see you this week at The Ellington

MONDAY 26th August 7.00pm Chamber Jam

Chamber Jam @ The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other.  Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues. TUESDAY 7.00pm Libby Hammer

Libby and the guys normally play weekends at the Ellington, so in honour of this unusual midweek spot, they are going to prepare something fabulous. They've told us that maybe they'll perform only weekday songs such as Stormy Monday, but at the time of going to print they couldn't think of any other weekday jazz songs, so they've said maybe they'll wear their jimmy jams. WEDNESDAY 7.00pm Ali Bodycoat Trio

Well regarded as one of Western Australia’s most talented and respected professional jazz vocalists, Ali Bodycoat has established herself as an unrivalled force in the local jazz industry. A regular feature at The Ellington Jazz Club, Ali performs sold-out shows with the Ali Bodycoat Quintet. Chosen to support Marcia Hines in her 2008 concert at The Vines, Ali has also supported Vince Jones, Grace Knight and David Campbell and continues to work alongside some of Perth’s greatest Jazz musicians, such as world-renowned Perth export and Grammy nominated saxophonist, Troy Roberts and international Perth born artists, Graham Wood and Matt Jodrell. In March, Ali performed with The West Australian Symphony Orchestra for their Tribute to The Movies concert. In 2010, Ali created and performed two sold-out seasons of Minor Major Marlene Downstairs At The Maj – (Cabaret Carnivale), a dedication to Marlene Dietrich, and at The Ellington Jazz Club and in 2011, Ali performed and created Franklin – The Music of Aretha Franklin, again to sold out seasons Downstairs at His Maj and The Ellington. (Recently presented again at the Quarry Amphitheatre). Ali was thrilled to be a part of the inaugural Perth International Jazz Festival 2013. After a massive success at their June show, The Seals, Perth's hairiest Bluegrass String Band, are back at the Ellington again with their usual eclectic selection of traditional folk/bluegrass with a tasteful mix of modern tunes done with a twist. With a traditional bluegrass instrumentation lineup (Bass, Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Fiddle & Baritone-Kazoo) these local hootenanny-mongers will have you dancing and carousing the night away, hey, on one occasion someone even married their cousin, a benchmark sign of a successful shindig. FRIDAY 10.30pm The SPREAD featuring Jade Webb

Jade Webb is a soulful and inspiring singer who as been performing in R&B, Funk and Pop bands for many years around town. You may have seen her fronting the successful Soul, Pop group Booty Jooce at The Aberdeen on Saturday nights. Jade’s immersion in such a wide range of music has given her voice and unmistakable individual sound, which is both sweet but powerful. This is a show not to be missed. Jade will be joined by the tightest house-band in town The Spread: Roy Martinez on bass, Sean Phillips on drums, Chris Foster on keys and Harry Winton on guitar. SATURDAY 7.00pm Why Georgia

Why Georgia?'  is one of the newest up and coming sensations to emerge out of Perth. 19 year old Georgia Reed's career took to a new level when she appeared on Season 1 of the highly anticipated phenomenon 'The Voice Australia' in 2012. Georgia has captured audiences over the years with the uniqueness of her voice, full of soul and warm timbre tones, reflecting that of a seasoned artist beyond her years. Now as part of the trio 'Why Georgia?' she is joined by the talented Chris Mackenzie (18) on guitar and Kim Thair (18) on keyboard/ guitar. The trio formed in 2012 and perform regularly at Perth's classiest venues. Their fan base has continued to grow at a rapid pace regularly drawing new faces to every gig. SATURDAY 10.30pm Late night groove series featuring Jade Crompton

Jade–Lori Crompton, daughter of Stax recording artist C L Blast's (known for his work on songs such as; Buster Brown's "Fannie Mae"; Don Gardner/Dee Dee Ford's "I Need Your Lovin'", Gladys Knight's "You Broke Your Promise" and the (fantastic) "Valerie" by Jackie & The Starlites). Her voice is said to be coloured by heartfelt Gospel tones, syrup smooth R&B, and playful melodies reminiscent of childhood Jazz influences. With a fusion of angelic melodies and sassy vocals this singer leaves her audience captured. The late night session will be an opportunity to discover the talent of local song bird Jade-Lori. SUNDAY 5.30pm Ameila Ong

A young, fresh, emerging jazz vocalist whose music is influenced much by Gospel, RnB, Soul, and Traditional Music is coming back to Perth for an exclusive and intimate show at the Ellington. Amelia has performed with many talented Australian jazz names such as James Morisson, Joe Chindamo, Graham Lyall, Katie Noonan, Troy Roberts, Dane Alderson also many Indonesian jazz legends like Buby Chen, Idang Rasjidi, Barry Likumahua, Andien, Yance Manusama, Rio Sidik and many more. Playing along side Robin Murray on bass, Ben Matthews on piano, and Bronton Ainsworth on drums she is ready to swing the club with some groovy standards and not to mention her beautiful originals at the Ellington Jazz Club. MONDAY 2nd September 7.00pm Holly Norman EP Launch

Holly Norman is a Western Australian songstress who draws on her classical music background and percussive inclinations to create songs that reflect the Alice in Wonderland in all of us. After years spent playing professionally as a percussionist, Holly began to combine a vivid imagination and her natural gift for catchy folk-pop melodies to create beautiful, and thought-provoking songs for listeners to fall in love with. This special performance will herald the release of her debut EP, 'Hollypop', successfully crowdfunded via Pozible, and will boast a full band line-up of excellent local musicians and horn arrangements for Holly's songs. Alison Wedding headlines this week at The Ellington


Make sure you check out the amazing singer Alison Wedding from New York this Friday and Saturday night - a musical treat not to be missed. Also an all new Song Lounge tonight, the return of John Bannister and The Charisma Brothers on Tuesday, followed on Thursday by what promises to be a wonderful tribute to the Music of Esperanza Spalding with Anea Duratiovic and Ash De Neef. Our famous late shows continue with shows from Kat Curnow and Dd Soul with Jamie Hall and Reilly Craig rounds out the weekend with an acoustic Sunday session.

Song Lounge Unearthed is a hugely exciting showcase with many new singers bursting onto the scene. John Bannister has been performing in the Perth music scene for more than 25 years as Trumpet player & Vocalist. For the past 10 years he has been fronting the Charisma Brothers performing cool jazz and blues. With residencies of 10 years and counting around Perth and beyond, the Charisma Brothers are bringing their unique blend of cool and sophistication back to the city. WEDNESDAY 7.00pm Hale School Jazz (SOLD OUT)

Renowned for it’s outstanding music program, Hale has more than 500 boys playing a musical instrument and a jazz program with about 80 students playing in 6 groups. The Ellington is delighted to offer these talented young jazz musicians the opportunity to perform on a stage that has seen the likes of George Garzone and Joe Lovano perform. THURSDAY 7.00pm ESPERANZAGANZA A Tribute to the Music of Esperanza Spading

Anea Duratovic and Ashley de Neef Present ESPERANZAGANZA: A Tribute to the Music of Esperanza Spalding. Grammy Award winning jazz bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding has achieved a lot in her very short career. By the age of 28, Esperanza has become the first jazz musician to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, the youngest member of faculty at Berkeley College of Music (age 20), and has worked with such seminal artists such as Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter and Bobby McFerrin. Tonight will feature a selection from Esperanza’s last three albums. Tonight Anea and Ashley will be joined by an All-Star 8 piece band featuring: Carl Mackey - Saxophones, Ricki Mallet - Trumpet, Blake Phillips - Trombone, Rhiannan Longley - Backing Vocals, Matthew Schmalkuche - Piano and Bronton Ainsworth - Drums. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 7.00pm Alison Wedding (NYC) 

NY vocalist and adopted Australian, Alison Wedding returns to present her music with long time musical colleague, saxophonist Jamie Oehlers. Alison Wedding started her music career at age two, singing for family and friends in the living room. But it was not until she walked into a jazz ensemble at her fine arts high school in Dallas, Texas, that she was first introduced to jazz. She went on to study jazz at University of North Texas under the guidance of Paris Rutherford and began to sing professionally in the Dallas area. Upon receiving her degree, Alison moved to Los Angeles to further develop her career. After moving to Australia in January 2001, in addition to teaching at major music schools in Melbourne, she was fortunate to play with many truly amazing musicians, including Sam Keevers, Jamie Oehlers, Colin Hopkins, Peter Knight, Bob Sedergreen, Joe Chindamo, Kate Ceberano, Richard Clapton, just to name a few. Alison's first solo CD, "The Secret", was released in September 2003 on the ABC Jazz label. She toured Australia celebrating this release, and shortly thereafter, The Secret went on to win the 2004 Bell Award for the Best Vocal Jazz Album in Australia. Alison moved back to the US in 2007, choosing NY as her new base to continue on her musical journey...She has performed at various venues, including Rockwood Music Hall, Cornelia St. Cafe, and The 55 Bar as both a solo artist and background singer. Her current band lineup is Snarky Puppy leader Michael League (bass), Ross Pederson (drums), and Pete McCann (guitar). Alison still has a deep passion for teaching voice and improvisation, and is an assistant professor in the voice faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Her new album, “This Dance”, featuring strings and special guests Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke, and Theo Bleckann, was released on the GroundUP label (Ropeadope) in May 2012. Alison has been touring with Snarky Puppy as one of their support acts since her latest album release, and returned to Australia opening for Snarky Puppy for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in June 2013. FRIDAY 10.30pm The SPREAD featuring Kat Curnow

Manila-born, Perth-raised singer Katherine Curnow began singing at the age of seven. In 2008, after completing a degree in PR and Journalism,  Katherine was accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) for Contemporary Music and during this time she rediscovered her love, passion for singing and place in the world. Finally taking music seriously, she maintained a heavy performance and teaching schedule, including regular performances at The Ellington Jazz Club. In 2011, Katherine relocated to London to pursue a music career in the UK and has since performed as a backing vocalist at Bush Hall, The Troubadour and Bloomsbury Ballroom for fellow Australian singer/songwriter Kirsty Keogh, as well as playing in her duo for her Thursday night residency and various venues and events around London. She has now returned to Perth armed with an array of musical influences and tricks up her sleeve. Katherine’s sultry and soulful vocals are drawn from her deep rooted love of soul, jazz, blues, R&B and hip hop music; heavily influenced by artists such as Donny Hathaway, D’angelo, Erykah Badu, Al Green, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill and Stevie Wonder. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 10.30pm Dd Soul featuring Jamie Hall

Dd Soul will be gracing the Ellington stage once again playing a combination of R&B, Pop, funk, Blues tunes. Fronting Dd Soul will be Jaime hall, A talented singer from Canada. Come down and enjoy the fine drinks and food menu the Ellington Jazz Club has to offer. Along with some entertaining music and great vibes, it will be a great night out!!! SUNDAY 5.30pm Reilly Craig

Reilly, born and bred in Western Australia has been singing and playing the guitar from a young age. He has ventured in most music avenue’s. From teenage bands, to duo performances to finally a solo direction with his music. Teaming up with his best friend managing him, Reilly has gone from strength to strength. Reilly Craig plays acoustic guitar, drums, piano and stomp box. His songs are both penned musically and lyrically by himself and sometimes with friends. Singing at nearly every Open Mic he could, Reilly has now been played on Triple J and is a regular act at places like Wolf Lane and The Aviary. He's ventured musically in just about every avenue possible. From bands to duo's to solo work. He's an acoustic, pop artist with a Sunday sesh vibe. Despite the fact that Reilly has never released an EP or Album, he has still had success with his 'Garage Band' recorded songs. 'Downfall' has had multiple plays on Triple J Radio 'Roots N All'. Reilly has also performed at the biggest venue in Perth - The Perth Arena, as Pre & Half time entertainment for the NBL games multiple times to crowds reaching 15,000. Reilly has just finished recording the debut album 'Two Hearts' which has a September released date penned. What started out as a simple singer songwriter playing an acoustic guitar playing at Open Mic Nights, has grown to a loop pedal artist playing in some of Perth’s most respected venues. Click here for tickets

This week at The Ellington

We're back to normal production after a big week with 15 shows last week - you will need to make a choice from just 11 shows this week! Tonight we feature the youthful talent from John XXIII College followed on Tuesday by a must see encore of the Beyonce tribute from Cristal Phillips. A long awaited return from the TLC Trio on Wednesday is followed by the farewell show for Sean Little with MFO Thursday. Come join us for an evening of talent and sophistication as John XXIII College teams up with The Ellington Jazz Club to showcase the hardwork and dedication of the amazing students and teachers from the College's music department. The evening will be jam packed with talent! Let the music students of John XXIII College entertain you for this one night spectacular!. An array of talent will be on display ranging from Swing Band to the Saxophone Quartet, Chamber Choir as well as individual performers/singers. It will be a night not to be missed. This band is a fine addition to the scene and The Ellington welcomes their return performance for another fantastic session of originals, standards, blues and soul in the organ trio tradition of Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott, Joey Defrancesco, Larry Golding and Dr. Lonnie Smith. THURSDAY 7.00pm MFO featuring Sean Little

Help MFO say farewell and good luck to tenor saxophonist Sean Little before he heads off to New York to study.  Sean has been an integral part of MFO since 2009 and is a regular featured soloist with the band.  Tonights performance will put Sean in the spotlight. The Mace Francis Orchestra (MFO) was formed late in 2005 to experiment with composition, in the style of the great modern big bands lead by Bob Brookmeyer, Thad Jones, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider.  The result has been the coming together of 14 of Perth’s finest musician’s and composers to create exciting new music for big band.  Over the last 8 years MFO has recorded 5 CDs, toured nationally four times and performed with international jazz artists, Jim Pugh (USA), Jon Gordon (NY), John Hollenbeck (USA), Theo Bleckmann (NY), Ed Partyka (GER) and Satoko Fujii (JAP).  With swirling saxophones, big brass and a driving rhythm section their performances are filled with energy, humour and sophistication.  A little big band that punches above it weight. Tiaryn is a pop-pianist, singer/songwriter sensation. An engaging artist who leaves audiences in awe, Tiaryn prides herself on striving to write completely original lyrics & catchy melodies, conjuring imagery of timeless stories like lost & found love whilst also aiming to surprise the listener with quirky and peculiar lyrics such as in her songs “My Big Bird” and “Banana Man”. Tiaryn will be joined by The Spread - the tightest house band in town which features Roy Martinez on bass, Sean Phillips on drums, Chris Foster on keys and Harry S. Winton on drums. Many local and International audiences have experienced the unique jazz style and awesome sound of Perth Jazz Singer Marnie Kent. Her mix of jazz originals and standards with a funky edge and her love of latin grooves make for an eclectic cross section of styles. With her roots firmly in Jazz, it is easy to recognize her love of pop, blues, r’n'b and latin rhythms. Her sound is warm and rich, her style exciting and dynamic. Her experience, confidence and dynamic stage presence make her an enticing performer. With Don Gomes on Piano, Simon Jeans- Guitar, Pete Jeavons- Bass and Chris Tarr on Drums. SUNDAY 5.30pm Katie Hodgkin presents Songs of Love Loss and Longing

Perth Songstress Katie Hodgkin (Random Act) returns to her jazz and blues roots for a soulful Sunday session that you won't soon forget. Backed by a quartet of Perth's finest jazz and contemporary musicians, Katie will explore songs of love, loss and longing. From standards, to some unusual treatment of the music of artists such as Elvis Costello and Leonard Cohen, as well as some unexpected surprises. Song Lounge Unearthed is a hugely exciting showcase with many new singers bursting onto the scene. Murphy, Magnusson, Wilson, Blow + Tiaryn headline this week at The Ellington

We have a huge week of music this week with 15 incredible shows. US trombonist George Murphy will be a treat tonight for lovers of mainstream Jazz, Melbourne guitarist Steve Magnusson will be in residence Thursday and Friday night, the wonderful singer Allira Wilson returns after a year in Melbourne for one show only on Friday night, the exciting Melbourne ensemble BLOW will be playing the main set Saturday followed by the return of Tiaryn who has also relocated to Melbourne. BUT WAIT - there's more, with four more shows from A Saucy Little Secret, a Beyonce tribute with Cristal Phillips, PJS Collaboratory, Night Cap shows, and the fantastic Rick Webster on Sunday. 

MONDAY 7.00pm George Murphy (USA) and the Gavin Kerr Trio

This August George has been invited to Perth to perform with the WAAPA Big Band, adjudicate for the W.A. School's Jazz Festival and to be an Artist in Residence at Hale School's Music Department. Oh.......and to swing up a storm at the Ellington with the Gavin Kerr Trio! George (vocals and trombone) will be backed by Gavin Kerr on drums, Ookii Effendi on piano and Danny Moss Jnr on Bass. This trio has performed regularly at the Ellington to sold out crowds and always entertains with their brand of swinging jazz. The group will also be joined by some special (secret) guests on the night. If you love the music of Frank Sinatra and the crooners, if you love the silky tones of the trombone (who doesn't?), if you love that broad Bostonian accent then you should leave your slippers in the cupboard, grab your "going out shoes" and get down to the Ellington for a night of swinging standards. Click here for tickets

TUESDAY 5.30pm A Saucy Little Secret Set to Scandalise Perth AGAIN

HMS PopUp Productions’ A Saucy Little Secret, is a masterful piece of cabaret theatre by Melanie Bainbridge, following the lives of five strong women whose music and attitudes influenced the development of modern blues, queer lifestyle and racial tolerance. Famous not only for their music, but also for their progressive and alternative attitudes to sexuality, race issues and relationships, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Gladys Bentley, Ethel Waters and Alberta Hunter, all broke into the music scene through the buffet flats and rent houses of Harlem, but rose to be successful and wealthy recording artists in their own right. Five of Australia’s premier jazz, soul and blues musicians and tremendous actors come together to share their untold stories. Di Shaw, Libby Hammer, Ofa Fotu (aka Odette Mercy), Natalie Gillespie and Harry Deluxe set the stage on fire in this sexy, sassy show. THE COLLABORATORY w/ James Sandon (sax), Ricki Malet (trumpet) + Nick Abbey (bass). Collaborators in many different settings, James Sandon, Ricki Malet and Nick Abbey will perform tonight for the first time as a trio - throwing off the shackles of piano and guitar and exploring the freedom of the chord-less trio. Oozing musicality, James Sandon is well known as both a virtuosic saxophonist and grooving percussionist. THURSDAY 8.00pm Steve Magnusson (Melbourne) with Jamie Oehlers and Ben Vanderwal

Stephen Magnusson is one of the most accomplished, versatile and distinctive musicians in Australia. His incredible technique and astoundingly beautiful tone on his instrument have made him an indispensable part of many bands and film scores. Magnusson has performed/recorded with many National and international artists including Chalie Haden’s Music Liberation Orchestra, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rickie-lee Jones, Tim Berne, George Garzone, Jim Black, Paul Grabowsky, Vince Jones, Australian Art Orchestra, Katie Noonan, Christine Sullivan, Michelle Nicole, Assumptions Trio, Megan Washington, Paul Kelly, SNAG,  Mike Nock, Enrico Rava, Arthur Blythe and many others. Stephen was awarded the Swiss Diagonal Arts Grant and the Pop Kredit award in 1999, Co-Winner of 2000 National Jazz Award, nominated for the Freedman Fellowship twice and the Melbourne Prize in 07. Tonight Steve teams up with two long time musical colleagues in Jamie Oehlers and Ben Vanderwal to present new music in a format that is bound to excite. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 7.00pm Allira Wilson returns featuring Steve Magnusson and Jamie Oehlers

Vocalist Allira Wilson finally returns to Perth after moving to Melbourne a year ago, in a special concert that will feature the incredible Melbourne guitarist Steve Magnusson and home town jazz fly in fly out-er, Jamie Oehlers. Allira Wilson is quickly emerging as one of Australia’s greatest young talents, whose musical approach has been described as “brave and raw as it is supple and intricate”.  Allira has performed at many venues including Bennetts Lane, the Ellington Jazz Club, with performances under her own name and also with the jazz band Blowfish, with Jamie Oehlers.Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 10.30pm The SPREAD featuring Danny Martin

Danny Martin (D$ / D Money) is a powerhouse vocalist who has been tearing up the funk, R&B and hip hop scene in Perth for over a decade. Having played with local outfits like Booty Jooce, The Dynamites and the famed Detour, Danny has adopted his own style and sound which is both an incredible balance of old school funk and modern hip hop. Danny will be joined by The Spread - the tightest house band in town which features Roy Martinez on bass, Sean Phillips on drums, Chris Foster on keys and Harry S. BLOW has been at the forefront of Australian Contemporary Jazz since it’s inception as Musiikki Oy during the early 1980’s. [The name change necessary to avoid identity confusion when touring in Europe]. BLOW’s artistic vision is limitless and ever evolving, inspired by the moment, the place, the audience, the mood and the empathy shared by the members of the ensemble. SUNDAY 8.00pm Rick Webster

Rick Webster is a guitarist from Perth , Western Australia , After graduating from the Academy of Performing arts with both a Bachelor in Jazz Music and an Advanced Diploma of Contemporary music , Rick has gone on to become one of the hardest working guitarists in Perth. He is the recent winner of the international John Lennon songwriting Competition in the Jazz Category and a finalist in the American Songwriting Competition in 2012. Rick has been releasing his own material since 2011 and his 2 EP's : "Rick Webster" and "The Rick Webster Project" featuring vocalist Allira Wilson have received critical acclaim and seen him nominated for awards from the West Australian Music Industry and win international songwriting competitions. Tonight will be a showcase of this material paired with recently commissioned work for ABC national radio as well as all new music written for the evening. The show will feature original vocalist Allira Wilson who is in Perth for a limited time before returning to Melbourne. The music of Rick Webster is varied and mixes styles of Jazz, Pop , Funk and R&B to create a unique style that has something for everyones musical tastes. Click here for tickets

Come join us for an evening of talent and sophistication as John XXIII College teams up with The Ellington Jazz Club to showcase the hardwork and dedication of the amazing students and teachers from the College's music department. The evening will be jam packed with talent! Let the music students of John XXIII College entertain you for this one night spectacular!. An array of talent will be on display ranging from Swing Band to the Saxophone Quartet, Chamber Choir as well as individual performers/singers. It will be a night not to be missed.
