The Ellington Winter Jazz Fest rolls on with another series of outstanding world class performances, continuing Tuesday through until the 7th June. The absolute top of the tree when it come to Jazz bass is Bob Hurst and his performances on the east coast have already sent ripples of expectation through the music community. Book now for a rare chance to catch the smooth sounds of Josh Kyle (UK) on Saturday and Sean Coffin (Sydney) on Sunday. MONDAY 7.00pm Chamber Jam Chamber Jam @ The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other. Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues. Featuring Guitar Magic - Duncan Gardiner (classical/flamenco guitar), Irina Vasileva-Thoo (piano). The music of Spain has an undeniably evocative essence about it whether it’s the fire of flamenco or the passion of folk and art song. Erin Royer (tenor saxophone) and David Wickham (piano). Erin was accepted as one of the few Australian saxophonists to perform a solo recital at the prestigious International World Saxophone Congress, which will be held in Scotland July of this year. Belleville – Gypsy Swing with Sarah Claire (Bass), Lachlan Gear (Guitar), Justin Kutylowski (Guitar), Charlie McCarthy (Violin). Carrying on the tradition of Gypsy Jazz created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, Belleville’s sound is a cross section of music from the Paris scene of the 1930’s combined with a selection of songs from the modern Gypsy Jazz repertoire. Featuring the dynamic and textured sounds of the 15 piece “Horizon Art Orchestra” alongside the nuanced swing of the “Glyn MacDonald Quartet” as well as new music from acclaimed vocalist “Victoria Newton” and her sextet, this event is great value for money and promises a musical journey that won’t disappoint. No less than 25 musicians will converge for this celebration of original contemporary jazz that will showcase a diverse array of music composed and performed by some of WA’s finest jazz practitioners. TUESDAY 8.00pm James Sandon Quartet
Having played with this trio on a couple of occasions at their long standing residency on Thursdays at Moon Cafe, there was an instant musical connection which needed to be explored. Sandon looks to investigate compositional and thematic developments with these exciting improvisers and interactive musicians. This performance will feature new works from Sandon being interpreted, manipulated, construed, twisted, and spun into musical pleasure for your ears. Bob's cultivation into a membership of talented musicians from around the world was fostered by lengthy tours and Grammy Award winning recordings featuring: Charles Lloyd, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Harry Connick Jr., Terrence Blanchard, Tony Williams, Nicholas Payton, Sting, Carl Allen, the legendary Pharaoh Sanders, Chris Botti and Diana Krall. Over the years, Robert Hurst has won four Emmy Awards, five Grammy Awards, performed on several RIAA- Gold recordings, and has received Top Ten and Five Star recognition around the Globe. During his musical career, Robert has also enjoyed directing, arranging, and composing for “The Tonight Show”, with Jay Leno, on NBC, for nearly a decade. SATURDAY 6.00pm Allira Wilson trio
Allira Wilson is quickly emerging as one of Western Australia’s greatest young talents, whose musical approach has been described as “brave and raw as it is supple and intricate”. She performs with Blowfish, with Jamie Oehlers, the popular big band MFO, One for All Big Band and WAYJO. She has performed at the Quarry Amphitheatre and Perth Concert Hall with Fred Wesley and John Morrison. SATURDAY 8.00pm Josh Kyle (UK)
Relocating to the UK in 2009 Josh was quickly identified as one to watch. "Standing out in a town full of singers" is how Jazzwise magazine, London's premier jazz publication described him. Gaining support from UK heavy weight Claire Martin, OBE, BBC Radio 3 presenter and jazz vocalist, Josh was quickly working with the best in town. A chance meeting with Bassist/Producer Geoff Gascoyne (Jamie Cullum) saw the beginning of a musical partnership that would see Josh release his Debut album "Possibilities" as a part of the London International Jazz Festival in 2011. Having played Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express Jazz Club, 606 and The Spice of Life, Josh was able to create quite the buzz and build his career on an International level. Empire is returning to the Ellington stage this Saturday night and it's going to be a massive show for a few big reasons. The performance is going to be recorded by a professional camera crew for an upcoming video release, so get down and make some noise because you are going to be on tape! It is also going to be the night where we debut our latest single, "Find Love Again" off our upcoming EP which is set for release later this year. SUNDAY 6.00pm Sean Coffin (Sydney)
Sean Coffin has been a stalwart in the Sydney jazz and music scene for over twenty years performing mostly with his original groups the Coffin Brothers (20 years), Medicinal Purpose, SCQUINT, Eff Sharp and The Theory of Nostrils and Sean Coffin Trio as well as being an influential teacher. Sean’s ten years living and studying in Boston and New York with George Garzone, Joe Viola and Bob Mintzer set the considerable foundation for his dynamically powerful improvising and compositional style which will be on display in Perth for the first time. Sean Coffin (saxophone), Chris Tarr (drums), Tom O'Halloran (piano) and Nick Abbey (double bass). Back by popular demand at the Ellington Late Night Grooves Session are the Imagin8's. Featuring the distinctly soulfull vocals Jade Crompton who is joined by Adam Robinson on vocals and Keys, Ben Falle on drums, and special guest Roy Martinez on Vocals and Guitar this is going to be one ejoyable evening. Jade Crompton, the youngest daughter of Stax recording artist CL Blast, has inherited her funk soul and power from her famed father, but developed her talent and style further by her love and interest of many genre's of music. The Imagin8's shows are known for, great music, a selections form a collection of genre's and most importantly entertainment with a capital E! You can always expect a suprise. This young and gifted pianist who grew up in the capital of Ethiopia and the centre of the heady mix of music known as Ethiojazz, has at last had his time to shine. Bringing contemporary and classical jazz, celebrated pop songs from the golden era of Ethiopian music, traditional Ethiopian rhythms and deeply-felt classical piano undertones, this young man from Addis has opened up a whole new door on a musical genre and region which has already grabbed the interest of many people around the world.
