Felicity Groom 8.00pm tonight at The Ellington
Felicity is currently on tour of Australia throughout April playing alongside John Butler for his Tin Shed Tales tour taking in over 25 dates and entering house hold name status!
The west coast city of Perth doesn’t have a heck of a lot of iconic landmarks, but who gives a rats when instead there’s iconic Perth musicians like Felicity Groom making sounds that ring through the country greater than any Belltower could. Yep, Groom ticks some impressive boxes, alright: she’s got the cool, feminine confidence of a 60s pop princess like Francoise Hardy, only her sugary melodies are peppered with bouts of wailing and growling sure to appeal to fans of the dirty rock of Nick Cave or PJ Harvey.
This sultry songbird has a talent that’s seen her wing it ‘round the world, first warbling her dark, folk-pop compositions through London, Paris and Berlin, before making her nest in Perth, where she decorates it with shiny things, like her West Australian Music Awards for Best Indie Pop Act (2009 and 2010) and Best Commercial Pop Act (2011). Triple J got wind of Groom’s 2009 debut EP, Treasures, and immediately whacked it on high rotation and made Groom a feature artist, so all could share in the brooding melancholy of magnetic tracks like ‘Criminal’. Up pricked the ears of Tim Rogers, Paul Dempsey, Sally Seltmann, Sarah Blasko and Tame Impala; who have all called on Groom to support their shows.
Speaking of mates, Groom ain’t short of ‘em: rock up to one of her gigs and there’s always a lucky dip of (sorta famous) Perth musicians causing a ruckus with striking lead singer Groom on stage. Expect to see members from Jebediah, Tame Impala and Pond join in on any given set list. They, like us, are in
constant awe of Groom’s instrumental talent (on guitar, autoharp and keys) and revel in the exciting musical arrangements she comes up with. The first taste from Felicity’s debut album Gossamer was the mega catchy Finders & Keepers (accompanied by an ultra-rad video clip) and we haven’t been able to stop humming ehhhhh-yeahehhhhh- yeah to ourselves since. Now she’s dropped the album along with the second hit Siren Song – given the solid history of success its creator has enjoyed up until this point, there’s no doubt this album will take Groom from local landmark to major attraction.
Felicity Groom’s debut album Gossamer out now on Spinning Top through Inertia. Triple J Feature album - November 2011
Groom also possesses a truly haunting voice. Like some of the best voices, it hits the listener on a deeply visceral and emotional level. Words completely fail to describe that smoky, sultry and beautifully haunting quality that Groom has as a singer - Neil Evans, ToneDeaf.com, 9/10 Best New Music
There’s no way you can stop yourself from falling in love with the enchanting depth of this album - Album of the Week, Drum Media
It seems strange to use the words strident and fragile in the same sentence, but both are equally applicable to Groom’s remarkable voice, which scrapes depths, slices across rooftops and occasionally threatens to shatter atop sweet and swooping melodies - Myke Bartlett, TheWeeklyReview.com.au

Album of the week 23/5/12
Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers - Caravan
http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/caravan/id255818583
By the time that jazz icon/bandleader/percussionist Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers began recording for Riverside in the fall of 1962, Blakey had already been the spiritual center of the group for nearly 15 years. The unprecedented caliber of performers who had already passed through the revolving-door personnel reads like a who's who of 20th century jazz. On Caravan — his first of several notable sides for the venerable label — he is joined by a quintet of concurrent and future all-stars. Likewise, it could be argued that each has never again been presented in such a fresh or inspired setting as on these recordings. In order to establish with any authority just how heavy (even for purveyors of hard bop) the players in this band are, they need only to be named: Curtis Fuller (trombone), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Cedar Walton (piano), and Reggie Workman (bass). With Blakey (drums) firmly at the helm, these Jazz Messengers deliver a scintillating synergy that doesn't sacrifice intensity for the sake of cadence. The trademark give-and-take that graces the laid-back and sophisticated pop and jazz standards "Skylark" and "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" likewise is responsible for the palpable energy brought to the sizeable contributions from Shorter and Hubbard — which make up half of the album's material. The title and leadoff track liquefies Duke Ellington's original arrangement and ignites it, fueling this extended fiery interpretation. Hubbard's first solo harks back to his own recording of "Caravan," which can be heard on the Impulse release Artistry of Freddie Hubbard and was recorded earlier the same year. Coincidentally, that disc also features Curtis Fuller as well as a rare non-Sun Ra-related appearance from John Gilmore (tenor sax). Blow for blow, however, this reading has more than just an edge — it possesses the entire blade. The melody snakes in and out of Blakey's strident flurry of syncopation. Another highlight is Shorter's interjectory solo, recalling his ability to succeed John Coltrane in Miles Davis' coterie. Among the original compositions, Shorter's upbeat "Sweet 'n' Sour" stands out as the most cohesive and ensemble-driven, although the singular group dynamic is well applied to the lively "This Is for Albert" as well. By contrast, Hubbard's "Thermo" is more angular — taking full advantage of the musicians' aggressive chops. This release can be considered definitive Blakey, bop, and Jazz Messengers.

Mental Health Reform Now - A Tribute to Elliot Pace 3.00pm today at The Ellington
A poignant and emotional Tribute to Elliot Pace is a call to action
Elliot is a much loved son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend. He was a talented musician who died on the 17th of January this year whilst in the care of the Queensland mental Health System. Elliot was only 23yrs old.
‘A tribute to Elliot Pace’ will begin the call for ‘Mental Health Reform’ by Elliot’s family and invite the Australian public to add their voice. We will call on the Federal Government to review the legal rights of mental health sufferers who act alone in signing their own care releases.
The ‘Elliot Pace Foundation’ will be announced at the venue and its mission will be to reform mental health allowing families a statuary right to be involved in the recovery of loved ones and not rely on an invitation to be involved. Drugs & alcohol dependency and personality disorders distort rational thinking. At the age of 18yrs affected individuals are considered adults capable of rational decisions and act alone when signing their own care releases. The flaw is obvious leading to more harm or death, mental health reform is urgent & essential.
Elliot’s parents are inconsolable with a system that allowed them no say in keeping their son safe. This is not about blame. It’s about change, it’s about reform. What happened in Queensland happens in every state and happens often because that is the system working as intended. We need reform now to save lives and protect people from themselves. Civil liberties and privacy laws that allow harm are bad laws and need to change.
Music Rocks Australia supported by musical performances by friends and family offer a compelling concert, a media presentation launching ‘Elliot Pace Foundation’ on Facebook along with stories from those close to Elliot, as well as those in our local community with amazingly similar narratives of heartbreak will complete the schedule.
Unique, real-time activities will ensure that all in attendance will take part in mental health reform during the event. If you or your family have been touched by mental health, drug or alcohol addiction and experienced the mental health system then your presence at ‘A Tribute to Elliot Pace’ will give you a voice to demand “Mental Health Reform Now’. This event is for everyone, all ages and especially parents.
The Elliot Pace Foundation invites the general public to an unforgettable few hours from 3-6pm at the Ellington Jazz Club. Bring your mobile phones to be a part of the Facebook activities.

Glyn McDonald Trio 6.00pm tonight at The Ellington
Tonight we are delighted to welcome back the Glyn McDonald Trio. The musicians have collectively performed all over the world including Vancouver, Rome, Japan and Australia.
The group draws influence from diverse ends of the musical spectrum. From classical through to Latin, and coupled with a knack for infectious toe-tappin’ swing, their collective works rest comfortably on a bed of groove-oriented originality.
"Glyn serves it up. He isn’t into just playing chords and devices but rather describing things with music, describing specific feelings or abstract concepts. He has a vision and his music will take you there if you allow it."
Barney Mcall New York pianist, Blue Note recording Artist, pianist for Gary Bartz "
An impressive young pianist who explores the musical possibilities with an enquiring mind and virtuosic skill. Watch this space...! "
Helen Matthews Jazz Program Producer, Perth International Arts Festival "
MacDonald plays with style and restraint. The three men bounce ideas off each other with practised ease. MacDonald also impresses as a composer. His melodies refuse to follow predictable routes, and his harmonies twist away from sugariness."
Peter J Casey Canberra Times (Jazz Reviewer) "
An appealing piano voice and a promising approach. Keep making the good music"
Tord Gustavson ECM recording artist “
Bound by the clutches of beauty, these original pieces demand an inviting as opposed to confronting improvisational approach. Rhythm plays a major role…MacDonald employs a soft elegant touch. [The] feeling of intense spontaneity comes in the tracks recorded live in Perth”

Random Act with special guest Rodney Grljusich (Urban Cowboy Band) 6.00pm tonight at The Ellington
Late breaking news:
Hold onto your hats yummy mummies, we have a Mother's Day treat for you! Random Act is proud to introduce a very special guest, Perth's very own Urban Cowboy Rodney Grljusich from the Urban Cowboy Band who will perform some numbers with us. Get ready to swoon as The Urban Cowboy heats up the stage and sings up a storm, but be warned ladies, those cowboy boots are made for walkin'.
Random Act is an 8 piece swing/blues band with a dynamic, gutsy sound designed to get you dancing on the outside – or on the inside if that’s your style. Random Act had its genesis in the 70's when three of its members were at school together. After mixed episodes and absences of music making they returned to their musical roots and came together once again while playing with the WA Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Discovering a love of big band/swing music led them to regular performances with WASWE Swing and a musical collaboration with lead vocalist Kate Hodgkin. After an inspiring joint performance by WASWE and the Urban Cowboy Band at 'Hot Cross with many charts written specially for this exciting collaboration by Ivan Shaw, members of the Swing Band realised the potential for a smaller, more versatile combination and Random Act was born.
Members: Kate Hodgkin on vocals (as seen with WASWE Swing and 'Harry Deluxe and friends'), Luci Anderson on alto, Ivan Shaw on tenor (from 'Booty Jooce'), Barry Telfer on trumpet (from 'Lola Goes To Town'), Geoff Connor on bass (from 'One Thousand Years'), Thom Dalby on guitar, Dave Cohen on keys and exciting new young drummer, Tyler Michie (currently at WAAPA) bring a diverse range of musical experience and taste to their playlist which ranges from from soul to funk to rock and a smattering of swing, and to their sound - dynamic, tight and gutsy. Don’t miss your chance to get in on the Act.
