This week at The Ellington


Scottish group "Horse" will be appearing Thursday night as well as a tribute to Aretha Franlklin on Friday and Saturday. Wednesday sees the debut of Gavin Nicklette trio as well as a range of fine music to keep your summer swinging along nicely.

TUESDAY 8.00pm Juliana Areias – Born to Samba - The Carnival Zest
February is the month of Carnival, the greatest party on earth. And it was precisely in a Carnival summer night that Brazilian Singer Juliana Areias was born. To celebrate and create her own carnival in Perth, Juliana brings to the Ellington Jazz Club a taste of this unique atmosphere. The concert will embrace sensuous Brazilian rhythms featuring some of the finest Sambas of all times, uniting traditional and contemporary composers such as: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jorge Benjor, Noel Rosa, Cartola, Joao Bosco and many more. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Gavin Nicklette Trio
The Gavin Nicklette Trio [GNT]  are known for taking songs everyone has heard and loved before, stripping each down to their atomic form, to be rebuilt as an original piece of aural-tastic creativity. GNT take great pride in blurring the lines between jazz and not-jazz and invite you to be captivated by their originals and original reinterpretations for this much anticipated Ellington Debut. THURSDAY 8.00pm Horse (UK)
Horse was born in Newport on Tay, Fife on Saint Cecelia's Day (the saint of music).  At the age of two the family moved to the town of Lanark where she spent her formative years.  Having written and sung from an early age, Horse received her first guitar on her 10th birthday. Throughout her school years she performed in concerts and teamed up with Sandy Ash. She later began an impressive collaboration with Angela McAlinden  a writing partnership that lasted for 19 years, they were later joined by bass and drums. Although based in Scotland, Horse tours extensively and has  contributed to Women on Waves over many years – building to a strong fan base in Australia. She performed in Melbourne on April 5. 2011 and is following up with a longer visit in early 2012! Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 8.00pm Franklin
Aretha Franklin tribute featuring Ali Bodycoat after a sold out season Downstairs at His Majesty's theatre in September 2011. Ali Bodycoat (vocals), Tim Cunniffe (keys/MD), Julia Jenkins and Solomon Pitt (backing vocals), Matt Bell (bass), Ben Falle (drums), James Sandon (sax) and Ricki Malet (trumpet). Ali earned critical acclaim for her homage last year to Marlene Dietrich in Minor Major Marlene. In this new show she pays tribute to one of her all time inspirations - the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Aretha is one of the most honored artists in the world today and the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series with Cian Caton
Born into a stong musical family, Cian naturally took the same path have a deep love and passion for singing. She is quickly becoming a favourite of the late night groove session, delivering feel good sound and RnB tunes in her unique style with the help of her ALWAYS talented , world class band. SATURDAY 11.30pm Deuces with Cristal Phillips and Solomon Pitt

SUNDAY 6.30pm Backlash Jazz Quintet
Formed in 2002 as a vehicle to explore soul/hard bop jazz, Backlash Jazz Quintet has evolved to include additional high-energy styles such as funk and world music whilst keeping the core of Hard-bop central to the band's identity. Long overdue, Backlash Jazz Quintet's first album "Through the Rubble" represents Backlash's transformation from a group covering classic jazz compositions into a predominantly original outfit.
