Rachel Price headlines this weekend at The Ellington
Three fantastic touring acts this week including young Jazz sensation Rachel Price (USA) on Friday , Blues piano and vocal legend Scottie Miller (USA) on Thursday and Adelaide swing and jive group Lucky Seven on Sunday.
MONDAY 7.00pm Grace Woodroofe (upstairs only available)
With her uniquely warm, husky, and sometimes mournful voice, Grace Woodroofe is already making a special mark on the music scene. At just twenty years of age, Perth-born Grace possesses wisdom and artistry well beyond her years. “I was greatly inspired by blues singers, and developed my own blues indie sound”. At the age of sixteen, Grace’s demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper by none other than the late Heath Ledger. “I got an email from Heath saying ‘I think you make really honest, pure music, and I want to help you get it out there’. Heath flew me out to LA, and he organised for me to do some recordings with several producers that he thought could help me. That’s when I first met Ben”. She has since forged a wonderful reputation and following in Perth and abroad through inspired, passionate performances looks set to take the world by storm. and In the words of Mr. Ben Harper himself, ‘You are not going to believe this girl’. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Anea Duratovic
Having recently graduated from the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Anea Duratovic is back to perform for you tonight at the Ellington. Anea is fast becoming one of Perth’s finest jazz vocalist’s. Joining Anea tonight are Patrick van der Moezel (sax), Ben Matthews (piano), Rohan Nelson (bass) and Bronton Ainsworth (drums) to perform an array of her favourite tunes. This includes original music, popular standards, ballads and her new found love, Brazilian music. Be sure not to miss what is going to be an amazing night with some brilliant musicians. THURSDAY 8.00pm Scottie Miller (USA)
Scottie is a Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame inductee for his contributions to Blues music & Blues music heritage with his instructional book and CD entitled; “Rock Keyboards”. Scottie has toured Internationally with music legend, Rock’n Roll Hall of famer Bo Diddley and Bluesman Big John Dickerson. Scottie performs as a Solo artist, with his own band (Scottie Miller Band), and also is the touring keyboardist for 2010 Grammy nominee and BMA recipient Ruthie Foster. “LIVE”: “Scottie Miller band submits ten new songs, each one a soulful classic, with emotionally charged rock, slightly countrified ballads, and rowdy, slide guitar blasts. Though there’s a touch of Tom Waits to the hip “East St. Louis,” Miller most often comes on like a Dr. John from the other end of the Mississippi.”

FRIDAY 8.00pm Rachel Price (USA)
Twenty-three year old jazz vocalist Rachael Price has amassed an impressive resume for her age. With the release this month of her new recording "The Good Hours", Price muses on the whirlwind ride of the last five years. "It´s been amazing – touring the U.S. with my trio, singing with the T.S. Monk Sextet, international jazz festivals in Brazil and Panama, recording three CD´s – all while completing a degree in Jazz Studies at the New England Conservatory." Born in Australia and raised in Nashville, Price admits she has been singing jazz since a small child. “I think she´s brilliant, I love her.… There´s so much that´s good: the body, the depth, the warmth, and the enunciation!” - Nancy Wilson. SATURDAY 8.00pm Penny King Quintet
The quintet takes to the Ellington stage again for an exciting show featuring a perfect blend of regular favourites as well as some brand new repertoire. Penny has long been established as one of Perth’s premier jazz vocalists, performing with her band since 1996. She is well known in the jazz scene for her fine crafted stage presence, and her diverse arrangements of standards and contemporary tunes. The groups repertoire ranges from modern takes on standards through to blues, ballads and contemporary tunes, and reflects the wide array of vocalists that she takes influence from, such as Carmen McRae, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Joni Mitchell, singer-songwriters James Taylor and Ben Folds, and contemporaries Kurt Elling, Holly Cole and Beady Belle. With her impeccable phrasing and intonation, Penny truly makes any song she performs a unique performance experience. Click here for tickets
SATURDAY 11.30pm Late night groove series with Tori Denn and Georgia Mooney
Back by popular demand is the great vocal sounds of Tori Denn and Georgia Mooney. After a sell out performance last year, the girls are back to show off what they do best. The now famous Late Night Groove Series has become Perth’s hippest late night hang. Backed by an outstanding rhythm section, the evening will feature Motown, R&R, Soul and Funk classics guaranteed to get you dancing. Tori and Georgia are both students of the prestigious WA Academy of Performing Arts and this performance will be an opportunity to combine their influences and showcase their individual talents. SUNDAY 6.30pm Lucky Seven (Adelaide)
Adelaide's Hottest Swing Band - These seven cool cats can start the night with cool jazz licks, move on to the swinging sounds of the 40's and 50's, and finish the night with bopping rock n roll, that will get the whole crowd dancing. Suits, Hats, Spats and slicked hair.... dress to impress. A driving rhythm section coupled with hostile horns blend together suitably with full-size vocals. Comprising vocals, drums, upright bass, guitar, trumpet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone.
