Aaron Spiers group farewell show 8.00pm tonight at The Ellington

This performance will feature a brand new line-up of the Aaron Spiers Quintet starring Tal Cohen-Piano, Sean Little-Saxophones, Jacob Evans-Drums and Wency D’Souza-Percussion, performing Aaron’s signature mix of latin, funk and jazz inspired fusion. The music will be an energetic synthesis of improvisation and composition intermingled with bustling grooves that will stimulate and excite the senses.

Aaron’s recent album Rediscovery, was nominated for best jazz song at the recent WAMI music awards and features Perth stalwarts Troy Roberts, Tim Jago and Ben Vanderwal, and will be available for purchase on the night. The album feature’s five of Aaron’s original compositions in addition to a version of Wayne Shorter’s Elegant People and Juan Tizol’s Caravan.

Aaron is a WAAPA graduate who has performed with jazz artist’s including James Morrison, David Campbell, Graeme Lyall, Joe Chindamo, Terrel Stafford, Ron Carter, WAYJO and MFO as well as WASO, Ben Lee, Kate Ceberano and Guy Sebastian.

Aaron’s most recent Perth Jazz Society performances include tribute concerts to the music of Weather Report and Joni Mitchell/Jaco Pastorius. This performance however, will heavily feature Aaron’s original compositions, which can be found online at: www.aaronspiersmusic.bandcamp.com

The Ellington's Late Night Groove Series is for the first time showcasing a live, powerhouse big band. On this special occasion the popular vocal sounds of Carrie Pereira and Luke Dewing will be accompanied by the tightest horn lines and grooving rhythm section of the Horizon Art Orchestra, featuring explosive arrangements of r&b, soul, funk and motown classics. HAO is the newest big band out of Perth, recently capping off a frenetic first year of performing and recording original music. Rupert Guenther presents rock, psychedelic and blues-influenced originals from his dynamic power trio of electric violin, bass and drums. Former sideman to the stars (Olivia Newton-John, John Farnham, Anthony Warlow, Sir George Martin), he has played lead electric violin the bands of Demis Roussos and Stephen Housden (LRB), recorded with Allan Zavod (Frank Zappa), and gigged in Melbourne bar bands with Australia's musos' musos - the men who make the sounds behind LRB, Goanna, Redgum, Daddy Cool, Ross Wilson, James Reyne, Procul Harum, JJ Cale, Paul Kelly, John Butler, and Casey Chambers.

With his distinctive Australian-made gold electric violin, he cuts rock riffs and solos drawing on his other life as a concert violinist in Europe. Hear him with his new band shaking up the rafters with the material off his upcoming 28th album "Ain't Gonna Stand For It".

robbie jalapeno is one of the State's finest emerging songwriters and he formed the bureaucrats to showcase his left-of-centre lyrical and musical visions. The band comprises members from all walks of musical life, with players from WASO, independent rock bands, chamber orchestras, show bands and even musical theatre.

Such diversity has resulted in a band that defies convention, combining existential troubadourism delivered with a smooth baritone supported by layers of jungle percussion, chamber-style strings, guitar, and mandolin, and held together by the relentless pound of the double bass. It is rock music for people who think, folk music for people who groove, world music for people who like songs, and experimental music for people who like a melody.

The band have recently recorded and released 3 singles, 'Far Horizons', 'Mirror Man' and 'Nosferatu'. The first two are the initial releases from the band's forthcoming album, Songs About Nothing, which is due for release in 2012. With her uniquely warm, husky, and sometimes mournful voice, Grace Woodroofe is about to make a special mark on the music scene.

At just twenty years of age, Perth-born Grace possesses wisdom and artistry well beyond her years. Forming a bond with music as a teenager, Grace taught herself to play guitar and sing.

“I was greatly inspired by blues singers, and developed my own blues indie sound,” she says. At the age of sixteen, Grace’s demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper by none other than the late Heath Ledger.

“I got an email from Heath saying ‘I think you make really honest, pure music, and I want to help you get it out there’. Heath flew me out to LA, and he organised for me to do some recordings with several producers that he thought could help me. That’s when I first met Ben.”

In the fall of 2008, Ben led her into the studio, and together across 9 days, they created her debut self-titled album. Grace had years of song inspiration that Ben helped to craft. “It started when I was 16, and I’m 20 now, so it’s taken a lot of work. This wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t have my heart and soul into it, and it wasn’t meant to happen. It happened because it needed to.”

Both determined and introspective, Grace explains, “Most of the songs on the album were written in my bedroom in the dark in the early morning. I put my guitar in my lap, closed my eyes and the songs just released themselves.”

With a deep, honeyed huskiness, Grace creates incredible observations of youth, love and death. “It’s definitely a dark album,” she reveals. “The songwriting is very honest on my behalf, and it’s very much written from a personal perspective. I wouldn’t know what else to write about and I do feel like I’m exposing myself. Especially when I play a live show, I feel so emotionally exhausted because I’ve just given so much of myself.”

Grace has been developing her stunning live show for the last two years. "When I was living in LA, I played in a lot of small clubs and opened for Ben on his Californian tour. I learnt a great deal and matured a lot there. I was away by myself for eight months, and pushed myself out of my comfort zone. It was so inspiring."

Grace’s time away from home was rewarded with a glowing review from LA Weekly who announced her show was ‘powerful, dynamic and striking’. She has since performed several shows, at Byron Bay’s own East Coast Blues and Roots Festival and Perth’s Ellington Jazz Club. In August 2010, Grace joined Ben Harper and his full orchestra on stage at Splendour In The Grass to play a mesmerizing rendition of one of her original songs, ‘I’ve Handled Myself Wrong’ in front of the 30,000 strong crowd.

In the words of Mr. Ben Harper himself, ‘You are not going to believe this girl’.

Sarah Mcleod has unfortunately cancelled her tour for personal reasons so won't be performing at The Ellington this weekend. Fortunately the wonderful Grace Woodroofe was able to fill the spot before she flies out for an extended stay in the USA. Grant Windsor returns home briefly from the UK to perform a special concert at the Ellington for the first time. Known for his work with the band ‘K’ and other local acts many years ago, Grant has since relocated to the UK and will be presenting a special night of new music.

Since his move to the UK he has worked with many great artists including Jose James, Carole King, Jamelia, Lizz Wright, Benji B, Bilal, Sir Michael Parkinson, Pino Palladino, Plan B, Clare Teal, TY, Russell Watson, Matthew Herbert Bigband, Stephanie Mckay, Nailah Porter, Marius De Vries, Badmarsh and Shri, The BBC Bigband, Sophie Solomon, Pee Wee Ellis, Gregory Porter, Bosco De Oliviera, Wretch 32, Don-E, Dionne Bromfield, Femi Temowo, and Jean Toussaint to name a few.
In 2001 Grant received the inaugural “APRA Professional Development Award for Jazz Composition”, which led him to study in the US with the likes of Jim Mcneely, Michel Colombier, Sam Yahel and Russell Ferrante. He has just been appointed “APRA’s UK Ambassador”.
As a Producer Grant has been working steadily on a many recording projects, this year resulting in a No.1 record on the UK ITunes charts for Clare Teals “Hey Ho”.

Currently a guest conductor and arranger with the BBC Big band, he has worked on many programs for broadcast such as the “Great British Songbook” with Clare Teal and a “Christmas Special” featuring Jamelia for broadcast on BBC Radio 2 Big Band special.

He has just completed work in New York on Jose James up coming album that features artists such as Pino Palladino, Richard Spaven, Christian McBride, Chris Dave, Robert Glasper and Emily King.

Rick Webster's CD launch 8.30 tonight at The Ellington

Rick Webster is a guitarist from Perth Western Australia. After graduating from the Academy of Performing arts with both a Bachelor in Jazz Music and an Advanced Diploma of Contemporary music , Rick has gone on to become one of the hardest working guitarists in perth working 4 to 5 nights a week in all styles from solo jazz guitar to larger groups playing rock, funk, soul, pop, hip hop and other contemporary styles.

Rick has spent the last few years supporting many local and international artists that pass through Perth on a regular basis. In July 2011 after many years of preparation Rick has put together his experiences and influences into his first release as a band leader. Tonight will be the launch of this CD and a taste of what's to come on his next release.

Additionally it will be the debut of Rick's new project featuring Allira Wilson on vocals. Combining Jazz and contemporary music, Rick has written a unique collection of tunes that will combine influences such as Pat Metheny, The Police, Dire Straits, Robben Ford and more.

When a like minded attachment of musical aficionados’ grace the stage the result speaks for itself. To encapsulate a genre of music that appeals to all generations is a winning formula effortlessly perfected by the band ‘Lucky Seven’.

What started as a predominantly swing band doing Sinatra, Crosby, Martin and Prima standard tunes or the more contemporary Royal Crown Review, they were quick to expand their repertoire with strains of jazz, roots rock n’ roll and rockabilly. Their wide appeal is evident and can have all ages and any joint jumping.

A driving rhythm section coupled with hostile horns blend together suitably with full-size vocals. Comprising vocals, drums, upright bass, guitar, trumpet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone. The quintet takes to the Ellington stage again for an exciting show featuring a perfect blend of regular favourites as well as some brand new repertoire.

Penny has long been established as one of Perth’s premier jazz vocalists, performing with her band since 1996. She is well known in the jazz scene for her fine crafted stage presence, and her diverse arrangements of standards and contemporary tunes. The groups repertoire ranges from modern takes on standards through to blues, ballads and contemporary tunes, and reflects the wide array of vocalists that she takes influence from, such as Carmen McRae, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Joni Mitchell, singer-songwriters James Taylor and Ben Folds, and contemporaries Kurt Elling, Holly Cole and Beady Belle. With her impeccable phrasing and intonation, Penny truly makes any song she performs a unique performance experience.

As well as her regular appearances at the Ellington, Penny has held residencies at some of Perth’s finest venues, and makes regular appearances at a variety of corporate events. Penny has been a featured vocalist with the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra, and has made numerous appearances at the Perth Jazz Society, both with her own quartet, as well as being a featured performer at the annual ‘Ladies of Jazz’ concerts. She has appeared at the Rottnest Festival, the York Jazz Festival, and the Fremantle International Jazz Festival.

A graduate of the prestigious WAAPA jazz programme, Penny had an original track featured on the Jazzaziz II CD, released in 2005 by JazzWA. She also featured on the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra’s 1996 CD release ‘Night and Day’. She is currently a vocal tutor in the jazz department at WAAPA.

This performance will feature an eclectic mix of compositions from Duke Ellington, Beady Belle, Crowded House, Miles Davis and many more. Penny will be joined by the stellar line up of local musicians.

Twenty-three year old jazz vocalist Rachael Price has amassed an impressive resume for her age. With the release this month of her new recording "The Good Hours", Price muses on the whirlwind ride of the last five years. "It´s been amazing – touring the U.S. with my trio, singing with the T.S. Monk Sextet, international jazz festivals in Brazil and Panama, recording three CD´s – all while completing a degree in Jazz Studies at the New England Conservatory."

Born in Australia and raised in Nashville, Price admits she "has been singing jazz since a small child." She recalls "jazz hit an inner chord with me at the age of five. I heard Ella Fitzgerald´s rendition of The Lady is a Tramp. I didn´t understand the lyrics, but I liked the feeling it gave me." Her father had an extensive jazz collection, and the young child started singing along with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Anita O´Day, Peggy Lee, Doris Day and others. "By the time she was nine," her dad recalls, "she sounded just like the classic vocalists of the 40´s…she would spend hours singing while pretending she was in some old black and white musical."

At seventeen, still in high school, she recorded "Dedicated To You", a collection of standards as a tribute to Ella, Doris, Nat King Cole and others. When the singer and actress Kathryn Grayson, of MGM musicals fame, first heard the recording in 2003 she exclaimed it was "the best young voice I´ve heard, period. No one around can even touch her voice and style– a style all her own."
After winning many local talent competitions in Tennessee, she was selected as a vocalist by the Grammy Foundation for their National High School Jazz Choir, and went on to become the youngest semi-finalist in both the Montreaux International Jazz Vocal Competition in Europe and the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. While performing in Switzerland she was heard by six-time Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon. Nnenna, and her manager, Ed Keane, were so impressed with the seventeen-year-old that he signed her up, and the touring has been constant ever since.
In her first appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival she received a standing ovation, and the Boston Globe announced "young vocalist Rachael Price created a small buzz with her work sitting in with the T.S. Monk Sextet." In 2006 the Los Angeles Times reported that "she is clearly a talent with extraordinary potential." Similar rave reviews appeared in newspapers throughout the country as she began touring with her own trio.

Having recently graduated from the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Anea Duratovic is back to perform for you tonight at the Ellington. Anea is fast becoming one of Perth’s finest jazz vocalist’s. Since the age of 4, Anea has been passionately involved with music, starting early in life on piano and then developing into a vocalist.

After many successful performances at the Ellington, as well as other performances at the Perth Jazz Society and Fremantle Jazz club, Anea is quickly becoming known on Perth’s jazz scene. Anea is also currently a member of the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO), which has concerts regularly around town including at the Perth Concert Hall and Heath Ledger Theatre.

Joining Anea tonight are Patrick van der Moezel, Ben Matthews, Rohan Nelson and Bronton Ainsworth to perform an array of her favourite tunes. With her uniquely warm, husky, and sometimes mournful voice, Grace Woodroofe is already making a special mark on the music scene. At just twenty years of age, Perth-born Grace possesses wisdom and artistry well beyond her years. “I was greatly inspired by blues singers, and developed my own blues indie sound”. At the age of sixteen, Grace’s demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper by none other than the late Heath Ledger. “I got an email from Heath saying ‘I think you make really honest, pure music, and I want to help you get it out there’. Heath flew me out to LA, and he organised for me to do some recordings with several producers that he thought could help me. That’s when I first met Ben”. In February 2010 the traveling partnership of Gabrielle Harter and Scott Nicholas arrived in Fremantle WA as High Street buskers. The duo had been traveling the South-West region of WA when they met, fell in love and decided to embark on their shared dreams and musical ambition together. It didn’t take them long to “turn heads” and gain recognition in the local Fremantle music scene, Drum Media saying, “That Velvet Echo turn heads, with comparisons to Damian Rice and David Grey the Duo have made a real impact on the local scene since their arrival here only months ago” while Xpress magazine’s Jennifer Peterson-Ward described the partnership as, “an inclusive, intimate tone. An extremely accessible and deeply personal performance”

LIVE That Velvet Echo has been one of the hardest working projects since they formed with over 280 live appearances (and counting) from February 2010 through to October 2011 being lucky enough to travel, tour and share the stages with some true Australian and traveling greats and some of Australia’s most amazing and influential unsigned and local talent, and many other influential, independent artists. With this introduction the duo found encouragement and influence through every performance they played and have not given any opportunity the chance to become a wasted one.

THE RELEASE The debut EP from That Velvet Echo, titled “Silence” is NOW RELEASED and AVAILABLE to DOWNLOAD from I tunes (released July 1st 2011) and is available at selected record stores. Deciding to avoid big name producers and studios the duo and friends created a bootleg studio in the backroom of their home in Fremantle and set about creating a 100% independent release. Recorded, mixed, mastered, pressed, published, produced and brought to you by Gabrielle Harter and Scott Nicholas - That Velvet Echo. In 2004 Melissa won a WAM (Western Australian Music) award in songwriting which fuelled her passion to create and develop her music further. Melissa was also nominated for a “Young Australian of the year” award for her contribution to the Arts in 2006. Being a regular on the Perth music scene, Melissa has performed in both acoustic and big band acts covering a large range of music styles. Melissa also has an original project entitled "Atira" where she has recorded and played alongside some of Australia's most talented and in demand musicians. Atira recently launched their debut album "Butterfly Rocket" at the Fly By Night Club to rave reviews. In New York, Monday night is big band night at the Village Vanguard and has been for almost half a century. The Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra debuted at the Village Vanguard on Monday February 7, 1966. What started as a once-off performance quickly grew into one of jazz’s longest standing traditions and after several incarnations, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (as it is known today) continues to fight the good fight. Thad Jones and Bob Brookmeyer, arguably two of jazz's greatest composer/arrangers, contributed a large proportion of the charts, many of which have since become immortalised as standard repertoire in the library of any big band.

Teaming up, Tilman Robinson and Ben Vanderwal present The Tilman and Ben Experience and deliver the music of Thad and Bobby B directly to your ear canals via a band of Perth's best established and emerging musicians. Featuring many of the raucous arrangements that made the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra so famous and some of the more left-of-centre compositions that made people leave, this gig will have something for everyone.

Random Act is an 8 piece swing/blues band with a dynamic, gutsy sound designed to get you dancing on the outside – or on the inside if that’s your style. Random Act had its genesis in the 70's when three of its members were at school together. After mixed episodes and absences of music making they returned to their musical roots and came together once again while playing with the WA Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Discovering a love of big band/swing music led them to regular performances with WASWE Swing and a musical collaboration with lead vocalist Kate Hodgkin. Amy Winehouse was an artist living beyond her years. Her passion for jazz/doo wop/soul can easily be recognized in her music, Tragic and suddenly she leaves us all with a catalogue of treasures to have and to hold. Celebrating the musical life of Amy Winehouse is a privilege and an honor. Perth singer Melody Whittle, along with a Stella Lineup of perth's finest musicians, are excited to commemorate the life & works of the one and only - AMY WINEHOUSE. This night will include favorites from both of Amy's' Frank' & 'Back to Black' albums along with some of her favorites and a little extra. Amanda Dee has extensive experience as a solo performer of 18 years. Leading one of perth’s most dedicated and long running bands soothe, and with 100’s of breathtaking solo performances under her belt, vocalist Amanda Dee is a force to be reckoned with. Her vast career has seen her perform a long running Diana Ross show, a state wide sell out show called ‘Imagine’ celebrating the music of Paul McCartney & John Lennon and is currently running a dazzling ‘Dream Girls’ show which debuted in a preview show for Ronald McDonald house charities. Her commitment to her craft has seen her work with the best musicians this city has to offer and she is constantly in demand as a performer.

SATURDAY 11.30pm Late Night Groove Series featuring Melissa Erpen
Back at The Ellington for a much anticipated solo show - Melissa will rock you with her powerful blend of soul, groove and r’n’b. In 2004 Melissa won a WAM (Western Australian Music) award in songwriting which fuelled her passion to create and develop her music further. Melissa was also nominated for a “Young Australian of the year” award for her contribution to the Arts in 2006. Being a regular on the Perth music scene, Melissa has performed in both acoustic and big band acts covering a large range of music styles. Melissa also has an original project entitled "Atira" where she has recorded and played alongside some of Australia's most talented and in demand musicians. Atira recently launched their debut album "Butterfly Rocket" at the Fly By Night Club to rave reviews. Melissa's smooth as silk vocals and powerful dynamics will make you come back for more, time and time again.

SUNDAY 6.30pm That Velvet Echo
That Velvet Echo has been one of the hardest working projects since they formed with over 280 live appearances (and counting) from February 2010 through to October 2011 being lucky enough to travel, tour and share the stages with some true Australian and traveling greats and some of Australia’s most amazing and influential unsigned and local talent, and many other influential, independent artists. With this introduction the duo found encouragement and influence through every performance they played and have not given any opportunity the chance to become a wasted one.

MONDAY 7.00pm Grace Woodroofe
With her uniquely warm, husky, and sometimes mournful voice, Grace Woodroofe is already making a special mark on the music scene. At just twenty years of age, Perth-born Grace possesses wisdom and artistry well beyond her years. “I was greatly inspired by blues singers, and developed my own blues indie sound”. At the age of sixteen, Grace’s demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper by none other than the late Heath Ledger. “I got an email from Heath saying ‘I think you make really honest, pure music, and I want to help you get it out there’. Heath flew me out to LA, and he organised for me to do some recordings with several producers that he thought could help me. That’s when I first met Ben”. She has since forged a wonderful reputation and following in Perth and abroad through inspired, passionate performances looks set to take the world by storm. and In the words of Mr. Ben Harper himself, ‘You are not going to believe this girl’.

Don't miss one of our favourite singers as she returns for the early Jazz show at The Ellington Jazz Club as she once again makes a splash with the sultry and bluesey tones reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday and Sarah Vaughan.

Jade–Lori Crompton, daughter of Stax recording artist C L Blast's (known for his work on songs such as; Buster Brown's "Fannie Mae"; Don Gardner/Dee Dee Ford's "I Need Your Lovin'", Gladys Knight's "You Broke Your Promise" and the (fantastic) "Valerie" by Jackie & The Starlites).   Her voice is said to be coloured by heartfelt Gospel tones, syrup smooth R&B, and playful melodies reminiscent of childhood Jazz influences.   Last year Jade was a contributing artist on the Charity Album “A little Hope from My Friends” and it was with her interpretation of the Beetles song “Octopus’s Garden” she expressed her love of Jazz.   A recent highlight was an opportunity to perform at the Opus, in Paris in late December 2008. Later in January she recorded her music in Alabama, the home town of her father CL Blast.   With a fusion of angelic melodies and sassy vocals this singer leaves her audience captured. Jade's next jazz session will be an opportunity to discover the talent of local song bird Jade-Lori.

It is a fact: one person CAN make a difference. Perth Songstress Ezereve is changing the world for those less fortunate one song at a time.

Following two sell out nights at the Ellington Jazz Club in October 2011 to launch her EP, Ezereve is a singer with a story to tell. Blessed with angelic looks, a pretty voice, and poignant songs full of emotion and messages she has set her heart on using her talent to raise money to support the causes she is passionate about.

Ezereve returns to The Ellington Jazz Club stage on Sunday 18th December for a night of songs and stories. True to form, she will also ensure she makes the evening at The Ellington Jazz Club count towards her goal of raising $10,000 by the end of 2011 – a task she commenced in September yet is already over half-way to achieving. Working with outstanding musicians, Ezereve will perform songs from her fast-selling EP, Stop Traffik, and patrons can also bid on a silent auction with great prizes.

Ezereve is also a World Vision Ambassador and will contribute every dollar from the auction and CD sales on the night towards Servants Anonymous Foundation. By attending, not only will you be blessed by an evening of wonderful talent in the company of an inspirational musician, but you too will walk away knowing that on December 18th, you made a difference to someone’s life simply by being there.

Ezereve will be supported by Georgi Kay, 2010 and 2011 WAM Song of the Year winner. The eighteen year old singer/songwriter has already racked up the sorts of accolades and awards that many artists spend decades working for, and she’s just getting warmed up. Grace Woodroofe 8.00pm tonight at The Ellington Jazz Club

With her uniquely warm, husky, and sometimes mournful voice, Grace Woodroofe is about to make a special mark on the music scene.

At just twenty years of age, Perth-born Grace possesses wisdom and artistry well beyond her years. Forming a bond with music as a teenager, Grace taught herself to play guitar and sing.

“I was greatly inspired by blues singers, and developed my own blues indie sound,” she says. At the age of sixteen, Grace’s demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper by none other than the late Heath Ledger.

“I got an email from Heath saying ‘I think you make really honest, pure music, and I want to help you get it out there’. Heath flew me out to LA, and he organised for me to do some recordings with several producers that he thought could help me. That’s when I first met Ben.”

In the fall of 2008, Ben led her into the studio, and together across 9 days, they created her debut self-titled album. Grace had years of song inspiration that Ben helped to craft. “It started when I was 16, and I’m 20 now, so it’s taken a lot of work. This wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t have my heart and soul into it, and it wasn’t meant to happen. It happened because it needed to.”

Both determined and introspective, Grace explains, “Most of the songs on the album were written in my bedroom in the dark in the early morning. I put my guitar in my lap, closed my eyes and the songs just released themselves.”

With a deep, honeyed huskiness, Grace creates incredible observations of youth, love and death. “It’s definitely a dark album,” she reveals. “The songwriting is very honest on my behalf, and it’s very much written from a personal perspective. I wouldn’t know what else to write about and I do feel like I’m exposing myself. Especially when I play a live show, I feel so emotionally exhausted because I’ve just given so much of myself.”

Grace has been developing her stunning live show for the last two years. "When I was living in LA, I played in a lot of small clubs and opened for Ben on his Californian tour. I learnt a great deal and matured a lot there. I was away by myself for eight months, and pushed myself out of my comfort zone. It was so inspiring."

Grace’s time away from home was rewarded with a glowing review from LA Weekly who announced her show was ‘powerful, dynamic and striking’. She has since performed several shows, at Byron Bay’s own East Coast Blues and Roots Festival and Perth’s Ellington Jazz Club. In August 2010, Grace joined Ben Harper and his full orchestra on stage at Splendour In The Grass to play a mesmerizing rendition of one of her original songs, ‘I’ve Handled Myself Wrong’ in front of the 30,000 strong crowd.

Logic has been making waves on the jazz/fusion scene since its inception in 1999. Based in Melbourne, Australia, the ensemble aims to present its own unique, contemporary sound whilst preserving the spontaneous and interactive approach of the jazz tradition. The compositions of Glenn Cannon and Tim Wilson stem from diverse musical influences including Jazz, Electronic, Latin, Classical, Folk and Pop music. From the tranquil settings of Demark WA,Paulie P started exploring the world of hip hop from around the age of 12, listing to acts like J5, Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang, Cypress Hill, The Roots, Souls of Mischief, Nas, Talib Kweli, Mos Def and Common.

After seeing his first live Australian hip hop show from Downsyde, He later recorded his first song in early 2003 when he was only 13, "The Place To Be" with Disaster the main producer from Downsyde. Within a short time span, Paulie P supported acts like Bliss n Eso, Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, Freestylers, Birds of Tokyo, Salmonella Dub and currently Australia’s highest selling artist, Drapht.

In 2010, Paulie P and Rocksteady was formed, a 7-piece live hip hop act comprising of recent WAAPA graduates with some of the highest musical talent in the country. ROCKSTEADY have a adrenaline packed show filled with dynamic catchy riffs and are destined to become one of Australians finest up and coming original bands.

They are now in their final stages of recording their first album "Until That Time" due to release early December. Be sure to book early as the band has a big following in the Australian hip hop scene so you don’t want to miss this.

Tiaryn is Perth’s very own pop-pianist, singer/songwriter sensation. An engaging artist who leaves audiences in awe, Tiaryn prides herself on striving to write completely original lyrics & catchy melodies, conjuring imagery of timeless stories like lost & found love whilst also aiming to surprise the listener with quirky and peculiar lyrics such as in her songs “My Big Bird” and “Banana Man”.

Gracing many venues around Perth with her indisputable talent, Tiaryn plays a strong and engaging set whether it’s a solo performance or with her band. During a solo show, her daintier vocal tones are exposed as she uses a loop pedal to create luscious harmonies and catchy rhythms on the keys. Jamie Oehlers is back to present his original quintet music with this new line-up.

The music you will hear on this night is music to dance to; on one leg, slightly intoxicated and only by yourself, but danceable none the less. Jamie’s last CD with Paul Grabowsky, “On a Clear Day”, was the winner of the ABC Limelight award for Best Jazz Release in 2010 an this year he release an album “Memory of Elements” with this Perth group. Following performances with Ari Hoenig, Joel Frahm, George Garzone, Paul Grabowsky, Kate Cebrano over the last couple of months, Jamie is preparing to release a new quartet CD of original material that he recorded with Ari in May; this will be available early next year.

2001 WAMI award winning Jazz Pianist, Russell Holmes has performed with many great jazz ensembles including MPS, Frames of Minds, The Raggabillys, Hip Mo Toast and artists such as Dale Barlow, Red Rodney and many others. Most recent highlights would include being invited to perform at the Celimontana Jazz Festival in Rome, Italy ( July2006 ) and supporting James Taylor at the infamous Leeuwin concert . Whilst being recorded on over 35 cds, in 2006 he released “One Evening”, a cd recorded with his regular trio with Matt Willis and Danny Susnjar. This was launched in October 2006 . Russell’s most recent recording is a nationally released cd by the ABC Jazz label entitled Fire and Rain ‘THE JAMES TAYLOR PROJECT’( released 21st February 2009) which features the regular trio line-up performing eleven beautiful tracks of James Taylor songs.

The Russell Holmes Trio has performed over 350 gigs in the past 8 years with residencies including the Inglewood Hotel, The Universal Bar, Clancys Fish Pub (Applecross) and recently at The University Club and Hotel Northbridge. It was awarded “Most Outstanding Jazz Group 2001” by the Perth Jazz Society and has continued to perform regularly since.

The Russell Holmes Trio explore the art and essence of the piano trio with their own well defined flavour and personality. The group swings hard and grooves with reminiscent vibes of the Oscar Peterson Trio as well as more contemporary groups like the Brad Mehldau Trio, pays homage to the likes of Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock and yet stands alone with its own treatment and inimitable expression. Russell’s sensitive style is supported by Matt Willis on bass and Mike Perkins is currently filling for Daniel Susnjar on drums, creating an interactive, unique and inspiring ensemble whose overall essence is one pure and authentic voice. With an increasing number of original compositions being included in both recordings and live sets, The Russell Holmes Trio promise a satisfying jazz experience.

Russell currently also performs with the Hip Mo Toast, Scope and and the Penny King Quartet and is a sessional lecturer in music at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Ali Bodycoat has been performing professionally in the Jazz scene throughout venues in Western Australia since 1995 with her Trio, Quartet and Quintet.

Allira Wilson is quickly emerging as one of Western Australia’s greatest young talents, whose musical approach has been described as “brave and raw as it is supple and intricate”. Allira has performed at the Ellington Jazz Club, with performances under her own name and also with the jazz ensemble Blowfish, led by Jamie Oehlers. She
has sung with popular big band MFO, All For One Big Band and WAYJO, performing at the Quarry Amphitheatre and Perth Concert Hall with Fred Wesley and John Morrison. She has also performed at the PJS for the Ladies of Jazz Concert 2009, has represented WAAPA in a tour of China in 2010 and has also been selected to perform at this year’s Wangarrata Jazz Festival. Allira’s soulful delivery caters for any style and tonight marks her debut in the Late Night Groove Series.

Matt Allen is a versatile, talented and soulful performer who has been honing his music skills since the age of 10. On paper, Joe Chindamo has been lauded and awarded for as long as he’s been playing music. He has a fan-base whose loyalty brooks no argument. In February, he completed a tour of three prestigious invitational concerts in Italy, and shortly after returning to Melbourne ‘popped over’ to New Zealand for a concert in Christchurch at The Great Hall Arts Centre, where he moved the audience during Earth Hour by arranging to have the lights turned out and playing ‘Smile’ into the darkness. He’s been the recipient of fellowships, grants and commissions and has had CDs sitting right up at the pointy end of best-seller charts. Joe Chindamo won the 2002 MO award for Australian Jazz Instrumental Performer of the Year. He was nominated for the same award in 2003 and won it again in 2004. Other career highlights include, recording The First Take (a.k.a. A Brief History of Standard Time) with the father of the modern jazz bass, Ray Brown (of Oscar Peterson Trio fame), recording and performing with Michael and Randy Brecker, Lee Konitz and drumming wonder Billy Cobham (with whom Joe made two CDs and toured the world 20 times throughout a ten year association)

South-west jazz ensemble Jazztrix is set to swing the city with their mix of classic jazz styles and original compositions. The group will be performing be at Ellington Jazz Club on Sunday 27rd of November.
Jazztrix is a jazz ensemble from south-west Western Australia and was founded by trumpeter/vocalist David Rastrick in 2007 in Margaret River. The group – which includes some of the south-west's leading jazz musicians - plays jazz classics and original compositions for festivals, weddings, and private functions with a repertoire that includes swing, blues, ballads, latin, soul and contemporary styles.
Jazztrix have played at the Leeuwin Concert 2010 and 2011 (supporting Boz Scaggs, Michael MacDonald and Roxy Music), weddings at Leeuwin Estate, Settlers Tavern, Bunker Bay Resort, Dunsborough Lakes, Karriview Lodge, Donnybrook Apple Festival, Augusta River Festival, Margaret River Wine Festival, and many private events.

Jazztrix recently recorded their debut EP featuring six (6) original tracks live at Yallingup's Fur Real studio. The album is available for internet download via CD Baby, iTunes etc. and on CD at the band's gigs.

Dale Boaden Trio tonight at The Ellington Jazz Club

Less than a year out of the WA Academy of Performing Arts, Dale Boaden has toured WA, supported the Bondi Cigars, worked closely with the Perth Jazz Society giving jazz workshops to various schools across WA, been invited to perform as part of the Jazz Guitar Society of WA annual fundraiser (along side Ray Walker, Cliff Lynton and Hank Marvin) and most recently been invited by the WA Symphony Orchestra to perform with them as they pay tribute to the music of Gershwin. His extensive work as a sideman for various small jazz groups around Perth has seen him gain essential experience on the band stand, in addition to regular performances of his own original music with the Dale Boaden Trio.
The Dale Boaden Trio is a modern, interactive, unique jazz band on the Perth music scene. Performing mainly original music composed my Dale, this group combines the musical personalities of all members to create a bold, energetic sound. Libby is one of the most well known and loved singers on the scene today. She has featured at festivals such as the Fremantle International Jazz Festival, the South Perth Fiesta, Geraldton Seajazz Spectacular, Araluen Botanical Gardens, Swan Festival Club, and the famous York Jazz Festival.

As the leader of Hip Mo Toast for more than ten years, the ensemble has performed to enthusiastic crowds at the Basement and Bennett’s Lane respectively. Hip Mo’ Toast has four recordings under its belt. Boasting both a quintet and a big band line-up, Hip Mo’ Toast won its fifth consecutive Western Australian Music Industry Association award for “Most Popular Original Jazz Act” in 2005. In 2008 Libby Hammer was awarded a Perth Jazz Award of a Life Membership for Outstanding Long-Term Contribution to Jazz.

A doctoral writing student, and published writer, Western Australian songwriter combines serious poetic reflections and popular songwriting in his songs. Sophie Joy Madison makes her debut tonight at The Ellington

At 18 years of age, Sophie Joy Madison wrote, recorded and released her first album. Recorded and co-produced by Duane Orriss at Sky Studios, Perth, late 2010, the Album is titled "Coming Home," featuring 10 original songs. Sophie is joined by her father, Nigel, and sister, Melody, in a small trio, with several talented locals helping out in the album.

Growing up in a family that lived and loved music, Sophie began the journey of writing a song a day for 3 months in mid 2010. Coming from the realisation that music was not just a pastime but something she was made to do, the experiences of her whole life and some tough situations she faced, gave her the context to write songs that are rich and pure and honest. Now, age 19, she has put aside university opportunities to pursue her music career with (a small tour in January, a music video in February and Launch concert in March!).

"Coming Home" is just the beginning for this young artist whose passion is to sing not to the ears but to the soul...

Multi award winning artists Victoria Newton and Jamie Oehlers unite for an exciting concert of new arrangements of Jazz repertoire. This combination is a debut for Perth audiences and will feature the talents of two of Perth's finest musical exports.

Victoria Newton:
This effervescent Australian vocalist has delighted audiences worldwide with her unique combination of energy, spontaneity and musicianship. Her rich, sensual voice and powerful stage presence are summed up by Steve Rubie (owner of London's 606 Club) when he describes her as having "a fabulous strong clear voice with a great sense of time and an even greater sense of fun!"  Victoria began her musical career in Perth, Western Australia where she studied classical music and jazz. After majoring in clarinet performance at the University of Western Australia, she went on to study jazz vocals at the Conservatorium, becoming vocalist with The Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra and supporting international artists such as Ray Charles, Dionne Warwick, Ray Brown and James Moody.  In 1990 she relocated to London and rapidly established a name for herself on the jazz and Latin scene, collaborating with Acid-Jazz recording artist Ronny Jordan and supporting Terence Blanchard at the Jazz with her own quartet. She also appeared at the Ealing Jazz Festival, The Soho Jazz Festival and the Ingolstadt International Jazz Festival in Germany as well as at London venues Pizza Express Dean Street, The 606 Club and Pizza on the Park.  Victoria's voice has also featured on many club anthems and it was this which changed the direction of her career in the mid-90's. As the lead singer of pop-dance group Strike, she had a UK no. 4 hit and global success with 'U Sure Do', followed by a further four UK top 40 hits and a critically acclaimed album. Victoria's vocals on the Strike album 'I Saw the Future' have been described as "outstanding throughout" (Dream Magazine) and her live performances "simply stunning", with "staggering vocals" (M8 magazine).   In recent years Victoria has re-ignited her passion for jazz and Brazilian music and due to popular demand has recorded her first solo jazz album.  'The Song is You' reflects a wealth of musical influences, brought together in a fresh and contemporary way; from swinging standards to sensual bossa novas, from dreamy ballads to drum and bass infused interpretations. There are a couple of catchy originals included too!

Jamie Oehlers:
Winner of the 2003 World Saxophone Competition and 2007 Australian Jazz Artist of the Year
His last CD with “Lost and Found” was a final nominee for an ARIA award and also for an Australian Independent Records Award as Jazz Album of the Year.

Pippa Wilson (Melb) breezes into The Ellington tonight

Ms. Pippa Wilson is the jazz singer that everyone tells everyone else about. She has the rare vocal quality that snaps audiences to full attention, swinging hot or cool with the great standards from the 1920’s through to the 50’s and beyond. Singing jazz since 1979 she made her debut with the New Harlem Jazz Band. Since that time she has worked with most of Melbourne’s top musicians and has become a well respected and popular member of the jazz fraternity.

Before starting her career as a jazz vocalist Pippa Wilson wooed audiences from Wrest Point to Tokyo, through Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Jakarta with the more popular songs of the time. In 1989 Ms Wilson formed her own group known as the Pippa Wilson Swingtet, seducing audiences with her stylish, sophisticated versions of “Masquerade”, “Sunny Side Of The Street”, “Georgia” and the show-stopping “Sweet Georgia Brown and “Birth Of The Blues”.

Ms. Wilson has been featured on A.B.C. Television as part of their ‘Played In Australia’ series “Jazz Az Now” with excerpts from the 1989 Mazda Montsalvat Jazz Festival. A featured singer in the film “Death Of A Soldier” in which she performed the song “Soldier Boy Blues”. She has also made numerous appearances on commercial television programs which include the “Channel 7 Good Friday Show”, Channel 9‘s In Melbourne Today” and has made regular appearances on “Bert Newton’s Good Morning Australia” on Channel 10.

Hearing Pippa Wilson is about experiencing a singer with immense vocal technique. The notes dip and flow with the ease that comes from artistry of a high calibre which has made her one of the most sought after and admired performers on the Australian jazz scene. Long term residencies at Menzies at Rialto, Radisson President, The Regent Hotel and numerous appearances at Hyatt on Collins and Decanters late night Jazz Club at the Hilton Hotel have consolidated her reputation as one of the hottest singers on the jazz circuit. After completing a twelve month contract with One Of The Leading Hotels Of The World, “Hayman Island Resort”, Pippa has done several tours of the east coast of Australia and also the prestigious “Victorian Arts Centre”. The year 2000 saw the release of the long awaited second album, “Errand Girl For Swing” and in February 2004 a third album titled “Gospel According To Pippa Wilson”

Sir Thomas is an exciting and unique band creating music with a focus on melody and lyric craftsmanship. They construct uplifting and stirring musical journeys influenced by elements of minimalism and textural soundscape. Their return to the Ellington is part of the band’s innovative project to raise money to record their debut album, "The 100 True Fans". The quintet takes to the Ellington stage again for an exciting show featuring a perfect blend of regular favourites as well as some brand new repertoire.
Penny has long been established as one of Perth’s premier jazz vocalists, performing with her band since 1996. She is well known in the jazz scene for her fine crafted stage presence, and her diverse arrangements of standards and contemporary tunes. The groups repertoire ranges from modern takes on standards through to blues, ballads and contemporary tunes, and reflects the wide array of vocalists that she takes influence from, such as Carmen McRae, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Joni Mitchell, singer-songwriters James Taylor and Ben Folds, and contemporaries Kurt Elling, Holly Cole and Beady Belle. With her impeccable phrasing and intonation, Penny truly makes any song she performs a unique performance experience.
As well as her regular appearances at the Ellington, Penny has held residencies at some of Perth’s finest venues, and makes regular appearances at a variety of corporate events. Penny has been a featured vocalist with the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra, and has made numerous appearances at the Perth Jazz Society, both with her own quartet, as well as being a featured performer at the annual ‘Ladies of Jazz’ concerts. She has appeared at the Rottnest Festival, the York Jazz Festival, and the Fremantle International Jazz Festival.
A graduate of the prestigious WAAPA jazz programme, Penny had an original track featured on the Jazzaziz II CD, released in 2005 by JazzWA. She also featured on the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra’s 1996 CD release ‘Night and Day’. She is currently a vocal tutor in the jazz department at WAAPA.

This performance will feature an eclectic mix of compositions from Duke Ellington, Beady Belle, Crowded House, Miles Davis and many more. Penny will be joined by the stellar line up of Carl Mackey on tenor saxophone, Graham Wood on piano, Pete Jeavons on bass and Mike Perkins on drums.

A fantastic night of quartet music last night from the legendary Paul Grabowsky. If you missed it then don't despair as he is on tonight and tomorrow night. Last night featured mainly standards from the quartet and tonight is exclusively sextet material featuring local players Jamie Oehlers (sax), Carl Mackey (sax), Jeremy Greig (trombone), Nick Abbey (bass) and Ben Vanderwal (drums). This is some truly stunning music written and arranged by Paul so I highly recommend checking it out. Paul Grabowsky is without doubt one of the finest musicians, composers and artistic minds in Australia. Classically trained - he had ambitions to become a conductor, before becoming absorbed in jazz as a teenager - he quit his studies at the Melbourne Conservatorium to concentrate on jazz.

In 1980, he received an Australia Council grant which enabled him to travel to the USA and Europe, where he could accelerate his training as a jazz pianist. He had the chance to work with jazz legends like Chet Baker, Art Farmer and Johnny Griffin.
Then, having settled in Munich, he led his own bands, playing the music of heroes like Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, before starting to develop his own ideas as a composer.

Paul returned to Melbourne in 1984, convinced that the Australian jazz scene had great potential, and keen to be part of it. He formed a trio with bassist Gary Costello and drummer Allan Browne, which won an ARIA for its first CD ('6x3' on Spiral Scratch). The Paul Grabowsky Trio is an ongoing concern, and won the 1996 ARIA for its second CD, When Words Fail (Origin).

Paul's career has followed several parallel (or sometimes intersecting) paths. As a composer, he has written scores for numerous films and television productions (including the ABC TV series, Phoenixand Janus). From 1990-92, he led the house band on the Seven network's Tonight Live variety show, hosted by Steve Vizard, which helped turn an underground jazz musician into a household name.

More recently, Paul was the co-host of the ABC's 14-part music series, Access All Areas. In 1997 and 1998, he was ABC TV's commissioning editor for Arts & Entertainment.

In the jazz sphere, Paul's trio became a quintet in the late '80s, with the addition of singer Shelley Scown and saxophonist Ian Chaplin. He recorded a series of albums for Warner Music. The first, The Moon And You, featured tracks by the quintet, alongside tracks from a New York session where Paul played with US jazz masters, Dewey Redman and Paul Motian. Tee Vee and Viva Viva were recorded by a sextet featuring US bassist Ed Schuller, which toured nationally and in Europe.

Paul was a member of the Australian Jazz Orchestra, a 10-piece, all-star group assembled for the Bicentennial celebrations in 1988, which toured nationally and in the USA. (Other members included Don Burrows and James Morrison). Another band, Wizards Of Oz, was a co-operative quartet co-led by saxophonist Dale Barlow; they toured Europe in 1989.

Paul has continued to work with Shelley Scown -- he is featured as player and composer on her Origin CD, Angel -- and has also been heard with Vince Jones, [Scott Tinkler][2], Bernie McGann and Niko Schäuble. He has performed with several international visitors, including Dewey Redman, Johnny Griffin, Sheila Jordan, Cindy Blackman and Steve Lacy.

Paul had long nursed an ambition to let his imagination run wild, writing music for a large jazz ensemble. He got his chance in 1990, when he was invited to arrange some Edith Piaf songs for a Munich-based ensemble, Die Konferenz. The success of this project led to another commission forDie Konferenz, to arrange some German popular songs of the 1930s or earlier.

From there, it was a relatively small step for Paul to conceive Ringing The Bell Backwards. With financial support from the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative, Paul secured a spot in the program for the 1993 Melbourne International Festival of the Arts. The rest is history... and the future.

He will be joined by Australian powerhouse tenor player Jamie Oehlers and an all star rhythm section including Nick Abbey on Bass and Ben Vanderwal on Drums.

This performance will showcase the skills of musicians Holly Norman (percussion, voice, piano) and Callum G’Froerer (trumpet), both music participants in the Australia Council’s JUMP mentoring program in 2011. Bonnie Davies, also a WA participant in JUMP for stand-up comedy, will MC the evening. Both Holly and Callum hold music degrees from the WA Academy of Performing Arts, and have pursued extensive study and performance opportunities globally over the past few years.
2011 has seen Holly take part in the JUMP national mentoring program working with percussionist and sound artist Steve Richter and developing skills in composition, recording and production. Working under Steve’s tutelage Holly bought a vintage piano and started to make up for two decades of lost time, writing songs for various musical outfits including a duo with her brother, Tom, and gypsy jazz ensemble Joe Black Trio, in addition to solo material. Holly writes and records all material at The Coogee Street Studio for Aspiring Musicians based in Mount Hawthorn, WA.
Callum G'Froerer is undertaking his JUMP mentorship with Melbourne-based trumpet player, Tristram Williams. Together they have been looking at contemporary classical trumpet music, particularly the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen. For this performance Callum will present original compositions and improvisations as a duo with Brett Thompson and with trio. Callum's JUMP mentorship has also included many opportunities such as traveling to the USA to attend the Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar and to receive lessonsin New York City, and traveling to Europe to take part in the Stockhausen course, where he was a prize winner.

The maestro of Jazz piano is returning for three nights (Tues - Thurs) this week for encore performances after a very successful run of shows in May. Come and experience an evening of beautiful songs and lush harmonies performed by WAAPA’s talented jazz singers. 2011 has been a busy year for the students who have performed with acclaimed singer Gian Slater, as well as taking a key role in high profile WAAPA events such as Jazz in the Theatre and Radio Active. The 15 piece WAAPA Jazz Vocal Ensemble directed by Victoria Newton, will perform everything from Louis Prima’s ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’, and Miles Davis’ ‘So What’, to Imogen Heap’s ‘Hide and Seek’. There will also be songs composed or arranged by the students themselves.

Amelia Ong - Tonight at The Ellington 6/11/11

Amelia Ong is one of Perth’s newest upcoming jazz vocalists who is influenced by the greats of Gospel, Blues, Soul, and RnB artists. She is a young vibrant jazz singer who has already established a name for her self in Indonesia. She has performed in Java Jazz International Festival (03), Jazz Goes To Campus (02/03), represented Indonesia in Norwegian Jazz Festival (03).

Since moving to Australia, Amelia has sung along with Australian Jazz Legends such as James Morrison, John Morrison, Joe Chindamo, Graeme Lyall and has also performed as a WAYJO vocalist in ’07 and ‘08. Amelia’s vibrant, captivating and moving performances are a must see. Her funky edge on jazz standards and her interpretation of melodies has become a trademark in her singing as well as her originals.

Josh Roseman is an American jazz trombonist.

Roseman was born in Boston, and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. Roseman toured Jamaica with The Skatalites and in Australia with the Christopher Hale Ensemble. He has also played with Steve Coleman, Dave Holland, Dave Douglas, Don Byron, John Zorn, Charlie Hunter, Mike Gordon , Soulive, Groove Collective, and Me'Shell Ndegeocello.

Roseman has led sessions for Enja Records as The Josh Roseman Unit. His sidemen include Peter Apfelbaum, Barney McAll, Ben Monder, Jonathan Maron, Billy Kilson, Ted Poor, Tony Barba, and Kirk Knuffke and special guests on the albums include Chris Potter, Liberty Ellman, Ben Perowsky, and Mark Feldman

He will be joined by Graham Wood (piano), Pete Jeavons (bass) and Ben Vanderwal (drums)

Wine tasting for the new list

Of the 50 wines tasted, in categories such as 'Australian Sauvignon Blanc + blends', 'NZ Sauvignon Blanc', 'Pinot Gris', 'Aromatic Whites', 'Chardonnay', 'Rose', 'Shiraz' and 'Cabernet', there were very few poor quality wines, and some exceptional stand-outs. Of course the New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs were received really well, but the surprise win of the whites was a Gewurtztraminer - all aromatic nose, sweet juicy lime and peach, with a long minerally backbone. Keep an eye on the next list for that one, for sure. The win of the reds was a WA Cabernet Malbec - all rich juice and spiced, tobaccoey length. Yum.

We tasted the wines masked (the wines were masked, not the tasters) with a range of palates from casual drinkers to professional industry tasters. The results show us that the wines that are technically sound are very often the wines that are most appealing to all. We approached the tasting professionally, and everyone was still lucid by the end of the 50th - of course, by then, with 50 bottles open, the same can't be said for two hours later...! And even later, there may have been pool-side shenanigans, though there is thankfully no photographic evidence (yet...).

First Soho nights success

About fifty people enjoyed a fun time with Libby Hammer and her selection of cabaret, Cole Porter and risque songs such as the wonderfully entertaining The Masochistic Tango.

The mood was relaxed and friendly, and we ran until 12:30 before closing the bar. That was a decent start, considering the night of the week, but considering the size of the queer community in Perth we expect it to get much bigger.

Interestingly, today and last night, the blog entries and Twitter tweets about this night by far (and we mean by far) outnumbered any other event yet held at The Ellington. With that word of mouth (everyone loved it) we suspect next fortnights Soho nights will be a lot bigger.

Rising star ascends to The Ellington Stage

Sensational new vocal talent Shameem Taheri-Lee will be providing a musical treat this Thursday night at the Ellington Jazz Club. A rising star in the Perth jazz scene, Shameem will be leading an all star jazz combo to create a musical smorgasbord that will delight any listener.

With a warm and soulful voice, when Shameem sings she seems to speak directly to the hearts of her audience. Whether you’re a jazz fan or just a lover of good music, you’re bound to enjoy this performance. Shameem enjoys taking familiar tunes and giving them her own distinct flavour. So don’t be surprised if you come across a pop-rock hit and a Nova Scotia folk song back-to-back, both miraculously transformed.

“I grew up surrounded by many different styles of music: from classical and show tunes to disco and funk,” says Shameem, “and I learnt to love all good music as good music, no matter what genre you might label it.

On Tuesday 14 April we will be hosting the inaugural Soho Nights, a night at The Ellington featuring Jazz and Caberet acts in a fun evening for the gay and lesbian community.

The one and only Libby Hammer will kick off the series with a range of Cole Porter and cabaret classics.

If you miss this one, the next Soho nights will be in a fortnight on Tuesday 28 April featuring Ali Bodycoat.

Twitter and Tweeting

We jumped on the Twitter bandwagon a few weeks back, along with the rest of the world from what it seems.
Not quite sure how it is going to fit in the promotional mix but we are trialing it with daily announcements of the acts.

Think:

"Tonight - Mark Fitzgibbon trio from 9.00pm... Mark is from Melbourne but at WAAPA for 2009 as guest lecturer - one of Australia's finest"

If follower numbers are any indication there is certainly interest, within two tweets we had a few dozen followers with no promotion anywhere.

If anyone has any Tweet content ideas I would love to hear them in the comments.

Getting time to blog and media coverage.

Well it has been a few crazy weeks since the opening. Everything is going better that expected and blogging was something that fell by the way. We are now going to start some scheduled blogging to keep everyone up to date on whats happening.

In the meantime we have recieved heaps of fantastic press coverage.

Tonight we have Ali Bodycoat Quartet

Ali has performed at the Perth Jazz Society, Jazz Fremantle, Perth and Fremantle Festivals and worked consistently in Musical Theatre with yellow glass theatre inc since studying at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2002.

Ali has held a trio residency with Graham Wood and other venerable Perth Jazz musicians such as Sam Anning, Dane Alderson and Carl Mackey at the Subiaco Hotel for thirteen years, supported Vince Jones, Grace Knight and Marcia Hynes and consistently works with the state’s top Jazz Musicians.

Tables have sold out already for her 8:30 performance but bar entry is still available for the usual $10

3 nights of international acts this week

Don't forget this week on Thursday night the legendary US pianist Kirk Lightsey teaming up with Australian Jazz legend Bernie McGann. The rhythm section will be Andrew Dickensen and Brendan Clarke (both from Sydney)

Friday and Saturday features the legendary Grammy award winning UK guitarist Martin Taylor with Alison Burns on vocals

Opening week success

Hi to all the fantastic supporters who showed up this week. The turnout over five nights was really amazing - we were at capacity most of the time with a queue down the street for a large amount of time.

Still some bugs to iron out but an overall success

This week we are straight back into it with 5 nights of music from Wednesday to Sunday.

Opening week launches

After 2 years of preparation we are almost there with the opening of The Ellington Jazz Club. There have been many many hurdles along the way and I can certainly say that it is far from easy to open a venue in this town. In fact sometimes it appears the whole system is set up to say no and not support any new initiatives in any way shape or form...

Anyway - it's time to party so come on down
