A short week at The Ellington but certainly no shortage of talent with great shows from Chamber Jam (Tues), PJS (Wed) and Malmac (Thurs). Then into the weekend with two touring acts from Sydney, Briana Cowlishaw on Friday and Alex Gibson Saturday. Late sets from The Spread with Aaron Malone (Fri) and an all instrumental late show from Daniel Susnjar (Sat), then Gina Williams wraps up the weekend with a great Sunday session.
TUESDAY 7.00pm Chamber Jam
Chamber Jam at The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other. Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues. Featuring Adam Pinto - Adam performs regularly as a soloist, chamber musician, and with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra. He has also been recorded for broadcast by the A.B.C. He has performed at many International Arts Festivals, including the Perth International Arts Festival, The Totally Huge New Music Festival, The Government House Ballroom series, and The Port Fairy Spring Classical Music Festival. Adrian Kelly and Friends - Adrian Kelly (trumpet) is joined by Tresna Stampalia (flute), and special guest Stephen McAllen (narrator) for a selection of musical hors d'oeuvres and petit fours. WEDNESDAY 7.00pm Perth Jazz Society The Collaboratory featuring Florisson, James and Crompton
As comfortable performing the likes of Stevie Wonder and Kimbra as they are Sinatra and Nina Simone, Adam James and Jade Crompton have long been staples of the Perth music scene. Moving seamlessly between jazz and the myriad of styles that make up 'contemporary music'. These two artists come together tonight to bring you their unique take on jazz. Carl Mackey and Ricki Malet team up with Harry Mitchell, Ash de Neef and Chris Tarr to perform some high-energy music written by themselves and some of their favourite modern composers. FRIDAY 7.00pm Briana Cowlishaw
A voice with a warm and silky timbre, lyrics that ooze honesty and contemplation and melodies that weave beautiful threads, Briana Cowlishaw is a Sydney raised vocalist and composer who has accomplished a large amount in her tender 24 years of age. Inspiration ranging from Nancy Wilson, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Ellis Regina, Fiona Apple, Ahmad Jamal and James Taylor, Briana’s approach to singing and composition is quite an intriguing one. Her unique creativity and ability as a performer, improviser and composer continues to cultivate new opportunities for the young vocalist and is paving a very exciting path for her career both in Australia and on an international front. Aaron Malone has been a part of Perth’s music community since 2003 when he began studies in Contemporary Music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). It was here that Aaron began to craft his vocal and performance skills with the dream of making a life out of music. After completing his studies in 2006, Aaron has been involved in various musical endeavours encompassing a range of musical genres and styles, including featuring for the Johannes Leubbers Dectet (jazz) and original funk band The Roast. Aaron has spent many hours investing into his passion and growing in his musical craft and is now beginning a new season as the solo artist Whisky Winter. Aaron is honoured to spend this evening at The Ellington and the opportunity to share his musical journey, influences and inspirations with you all. Having honed his skills busking on the streets of Sydney, Alex Gibson is set to tour the country celebrating the release of his first album ‘This is Life’, which debuted at number 2 on the iTunes Singer Songwriter Charts. Alex has recently shared his unique vocal tone with millions of people nation wide, resulting in 5 singles in the top 100 of the overall iTunes charts. ‘This is life’, Produced by James Englund and Mastered by Greg Calbi (Bon Iver, John Mayer) is a collection of songs capturing the raw energy and honesty of his live performance and highlights his distinctive sound, that is at once sweet and sultry, and absolutely heartfelt. The LATE NIGHT GROOVE series goes full instrumental! Drummer Daniel Susnjar (based in the USA for the past 5 years) heads an all-star instrumental lineup performing high-energy R&B/gospel/fusion music. For this one-off show, Daniel has also integrated his expert knowledge of Afro-Peruvian rhythms into the mix to create truly unique modern grooves. A must-see event. Yet that's exactly what Noongar singer-songwriter Gina Williams has been doing with audiences all over the world. You don't need to understand the words; love, loss, joy all mean the same things in anyone's language. Teaming up with her dear friend Guy Ghouse (Desert Child), Gina brings a modern take on an ancient tradition, merging evocative sounds, acoustic instruments and that incredible, beautiful voice. The natural rhythms of the language are perfectly captured, and there's an onstage connection that comes from two people who've grown up with similar soundtracks, who share a deep friendship and commitment to this music. Tonight’s performance is a preview of the new MFO project called “Music For Average Photography” - a series on new music written to accompany some pretty average photographs taken this year with a camera phone. A humours way to inspire some serious music. This new music will be recorded in mid Oct for a new MFO CD release. Be the first to hear it.
